Bentonite particles sensitized with concentrated human Old Tuberculin were used for detection of circulating antibodies to M. tuberculosis in human sera. There was no sharp distinction between the titres of patients with active and inactive tuberculosis, but progressively higher antibody titres accompanied increased severity of infection. The sera of 95.3% of the patients studied had a titre of 1:8 or higher. This level was considered to be the minimal significant titre indicative of the presence of metabolically active bacilli in old and new lesions. Tuberculin-negative controls and syphilitic sera were negative. A common zone of incidence in the 1:8-1:32 range was found where differentiation between tuberculin-positive healthy people and patients with tuberculosis was not possible; however, titres of 1:64 or more were found only in tuberculous patients. The antibody under study is heat-labile.

Fluctuation test developed by Green allows to detect the mutagenicity of trace and non-toxic chemical concentrations. Mutagenic activity of both carcinogenic nitramines--nitrodimethylamine, nitrodiethylamine and nitromorpholine (0.1--10 mM) and their nitrosamine analogues-nitrosodimethylamine, nitrosodiethylamine and nitrosomorpholine (0.01--0.1 mM) was detected in fluctuation test with Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and TA 1530 as indicator organism in the presence of postmitochondrial supernatant from liver of rats treated with Aroclor 1254. Nearly all compounds appeared to be mutagenic even in the absence of co-factors of microsomal oxygenation.

Five thousand two hundred and two sera were tested in parallel using the Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) Card Test, the Reagin Screen Test (RST), and the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) Slide Test. The fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test was then used to confirm the reactive specimens. This comparison study was to evaluate the RPR and the RST when used in a screening program. Of the total 5,202 samples, 199 (3.8%) were VDRL reactive, 187 (3.6%) were RPR reactive, and 183 (3.5%) were RST reactive. Of the 199 VDRL reactive, 116 (58.2%) were confirmed by the FTA-ABS, 137 (73.3%) of the 187 RPR reactives were confirmed by the FTA-ABS and of the 183 RST reactives, 115 (62.8%) were confirmed by the FTA-ABS. Included in this discussion are some testing and procedural problems encountered during the study.
The initial phase of formation of the biogenic suspension was studied in experimental communities of bacteria and protozoans that simulate degradation of the phenol technogenic flows. Protozoans were shown to initiate formation of bacterial aggregates and increase the size of bacterial flocules several hundred times. Factors were found by the methods of mathematical planning, which markedly affect the size and amount of flocules. Unlike natural water bodies, in the sample communities, the presence of abiogenic substrate was not essential for aggregation of the bacteria. The aggregated bacterial cells make an important contribution to degradation of organic compounds.
