Laparoscopic cholecystectomy [continuing education credit].

1. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a relatively minor procedure compared with open cholecystectomy; the patient experiences less postoperative pain, and is able to ambulate quicker, and many risk factors are reduced. 2. Approximately 1% of laparoscopic cholecystectomies are converted to open procedures because of unusual anatomy, an inordinate amount of bleeding, or considerable adhesions. 3. The patient is prepared and draped in the usual manner for abdominal surgery; if an open procedure becomes necessary, redraping will not be needed. To prevent an unnecessary delay, the back table should include instrumentation for an open procedure.

Reuse of single use medical devices.

During the ten years that I have worked at the Canadian Nurses Protective Society, we have had numerous calls from Operating Room nurses questioning the practice of re-using single use medical devices in their facilities and voicing their concerns about possible harm to patients, themselves and potential liability exposure. Interest in this topic has been rekindled by the recent Saskatchewan case involving the death of a patient from variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (vCJD) and possible transmission of vCJD to 71 patients who may have been exposed to the same endoscope as the deceased while in hospital. In this article, I propose to address some of the concerns related to the reuse of single use medical devices by focusing on the prevalence of this practice, the legal risks involved, regulation of this practice, and risk management.

Computers in the operating room: the staff nurse perspective.

Computers and information management are long-standing tools for the Perioperative Manager. As paperless nursing documentation makes its way into the operating room, the staff nurse must become adept at the use of the computer. How to get the staff nurse comfortable with this new role, and concerns the staff nurse may voice are the subject of this article.
