The examination of 83 patients suffering from tumours (78 tumours of the testicle, 4 melanoblastomas, 1 carcinoma of the thyroid gland) led to conclusions on the effect of complex therapy on spermiogenesis. By means of spermiograms carried out in the course of the illness we found out restrictions of fertility which were more distinctly marked with patients suffering from gonadal tumours than with patients suffering from extragonadal tumours. The loss in ejaculation after RLN with existing tumours of the testes has to be considered as a disturbance in fertility to the highest degree. X-ray therapy impairs spermiogenesis more than chemotherapeutics. After chemotherapy we observed a recovery of spermiogenesis, after x-ray therapy only then if there were no irreversible damages of the germinal epithelium.

A highly metastatic murine tumor line (ESb) and a plastic-adherent variant derived from it (ESb-M) were compared for expression of cell surface glycoproteins. Previous studies had shown that ESb-M cells were very similar to ESb cells in terms of cell surface marker expression and invasive capacity in vitro, but studies in vivo revealed that they exerted a decreased metastatic capacity. Syngeneic animals inoculated SC with ESb-M cells developed larger primary tumors and survived much longer than animals inoculated similarly with ESb cells. When using the lectin soybean agglutinin (SBA), distinct differences were observed in the glycosylation of a 220 kDa and a 80 kDa cell surface glycoprotein. Further differences in expression of cell membrane proteins were detected by means of variant-specific monoclonal antibodies. These specific ligands reacted with 65-75 kDa membrane glycoproteins, which were more prominent in ESb-M cells than in ESb cells. Apart from these differences, the two cell lines showed very similar profiles of membrane glycoproteins and lectin staining. Whether the structural differences seen in cell surface proteins can explain the changes in functional behavior (metastatic behavior and plastic-adhesive properties) of the cells remains to be investigated.

Recent progress in the treatment of acute leukemias in adults includes combination chemotherapy (TAD) and the use of high-dose antimetabolites (methotrexate plus citrovorum rescue or high-dose cytosine-arabinoside). The role of post-induction chemotherapy is still controversial especially with regard to the maintenance chemotherapy. The German AML (acute myeloid leukemia) Cooperative Group started a cooperative multi-center comparative trial to evaluate the validity of maintenance chemotherapy in patients with AML. A complete remission rate of 61% was achieved. The median time to complete remission was 33 days, and a complete remission was obtained in 68% of responders after only 1 course of therapy. Patients in complete remission were eligible for randomization for TAD consolidation with or without monthly maintenance chemotherapy. The up-dated life-table analysis revealed a predicted rate of continuous complete remission at 2 1/2 years of 30% for the maintenance and 17% for the non-maintenance group of patients (p = 0.003). On the basis of these results post-induction myelosuppressive chemotherapy appears to be substantial for achieving long-term remissions in AML. In addition, consolidation chemotherapy together with monthly maintenance seems to be superior to consolidation in prolonging the remission duration. In adult ALL/AUL (acute lymphatic/undifferentiated leukemia) complete remission rates amount to 60-85% and remission durations of 9-25 months have been reported.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Given the endemic goiter in Romania, the authors sought to evaluate the morphologic prognostic factors with histogenetic implications in the development of thyroid cancer. On this purpose, the morphologic factors that correlate the type of thyroid cancer to the host stromal alterations were studied on 3 groups of 20 patients each and 2 control lots for multinodular goiter and nodular goiter. One group consisted of cases of thyroid carcinoma associated with endemic goiter, the second group included cases of thyroid carcinoma with thyroiditis and nodular goiter and the third group, the cases of thyroid sclerosing occult carcinoma. The study showed in all the cases, that thyroid cancer evoluates as an autonomic lesion, independent of the endemic goiter which is not a risk factor.
