Involvement of extraocular muscle by Cysticercus cellulosae is very rare. Rarer still is the isolated involvement of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle presenting clinically as ptosis. We report here such a presentation in an eleven years old girl.
Infection with Taenia crassiceps cysticerci in male mice produces an increase in serum estradiol levels, whereas serum testosterone is abolished. Concomitantly, complete atrophy of the reproductive tract of infected male mice is observed. The present study was under-taken to determine the expression pattern of three key steroidogenic enzymes in the reproductive tissues of normal and infected male mice. In infected mice, serum estradiol levels were increased 97 times as compared with control mice of the same age. Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone levels were completely inhibited. The expression of 5 alpha-reductase in the reproductive tract was markedly reduced, whereas aromatase mRNA levels were highly elevated in the testes of parasitized mice. No change in the mRNA content for cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme was evident. The overall results suggest that the change in the normal production of sex steroids in infected male mice is produced concomitantly by the inhibition of expression of the 5 alpha-reductase enzyme and the activation of aromatase gene expression. This induces a preferential metabolism from testosterone toestradiol instead of the normal metabolism from testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.

One hundred consecutive patients presenting with symptoms and signs of neurocysticercosis, confirmed by neuroimaging techniques, were randomly assigned to treatment with either praziquantel 50 mg/kg/d for 15 d or albendazole 15 mg/kg/d for 30 d. All patients were treated in addition with steroids for 45 d. Follow-up was for 90 d for response to treatment and at least 1 year for recurrence. Although similar numbers of patients showed no improvement in neuroimaging criteria at 3 months, the response to albendazole was more pronounced with larger numbers showing marked improvement or disappearance of lesions. Resolution of the presenting neurological signs and symptoms was also more frequent in the albendazole group. Electroencephalographic changes also became normal. The use of steroid cover eliminated the headache frequently present during the first few days of treatment and permitted severe cases to be treated. Both albendazole and praziquantel appeared to be effective at the doses used, with albendazole showing a slightly better overall response.

In 1976 a 28-year-old Ecuadoran male suffered paraparesis after a kick to his back. Iophendylate myelography was followed by thoracic laminectomy with incomplete resolution of the paraparesis. One year later, worsening of the paraparesis was managed by further thoracic laminectomy without improvement. In 1978 a spinal cord stimulator was implanted via low thoracic laminectomy as a measure to counter his spasticity. In 1984 metrizamide myelography and computed tomography scanning were performed for increasing spastic paraparesis that disclosed an intramedullary lesion at the T-4 level. Exploration and myelotomy revealed an intramedullary cysticercal cyst, which was totally removed.
