The stability and redispersion properties of nitrofurantoin dispersions are experimentally studied using simple but reproducible techniques. Solutions of different electrolyte concentrations and pH values are employed as dispersing media. The pH appears to be a determinant factor in the properties studied. Thus, with all the electrolytes considered (NaCl, CaCl2, and AlCl3, almost optimum redispersion was achieved when the pH was maintained close to neutrality. However, the important effect of AlCl3 as compared with the other electrolytes is also clearly demonstrated. Especially interesting are the results obtained when 0.1% Carbopol is added to the suspensions. The important effect of this polymer on the surface charge of nitrofurantoin, mainly at pH 7, manifests in excellent redispersion of the suspensions with either of the electrolytes employed. Using simple expressions that approximate the equations proposed in the DLVO theory of interaction between colloidal particles, the variation of the total interaction energy between nitrofurantoin particles is calculated as a function of interparticle distance. The results are compared with the experimental determinations of the sedimentation and redispersion properties of nitrofurantoin. Although some discrepancies between theory and experiments are found, the results indicate a reasonable agreement between the general features of both.

A broadband ultrasonic spectrometer has been used to measure ultrasonic attenuation and phase velocity dispersion as functions of frequency in kaolin suspensions over a range of solid volume fractions from phi = 0.01 to phi = 0.08 and over a pH range from 3 to 9. The Harker and Temple theory was used to simulate ultrasound propagation in the suspension, using measured slope viscosity, particle size, and size distribution. Simulated results for ultrasonic attenuation and phase velocity agree well with measured values. Both sets of results agree well and show that for volume fractions above phi approximately 0.05 attenuation and velocity dispersion increase for increasing floc size, whereas for volume fractions below phi approximately 0.05 attenuation and velocity dispersion both decrease. It is proposed that the mechanism for this change in behavior around phi approximately 0.05 involves changes in floc density and floc size distribution with phi and pH. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
In this work we investigate some aspects of the rheological behavior of sodium montmorillonite (NaMt) suspensions in the pH range 3 to 9, of NaCl concentrations between 10(-3) and 10(-1) M, and of solid concentrations between 5 and 11% w/v. Three kinds of experiments were performed: steady-state viscometry, oscillatory test, and creep recovery. The physical quantities of interest were the yield stress sigma(y) of the suspensions, the elastic rigidity modulus G', and the instantaneous elastic compliance. Furthermore, G' was obtained from oscillatory tests in three different experiments: determination of the viscoelastic linear region, oscillograms, and the gelation process. All quantities were found to scale with the concentration of solids, C, according to a power law of the form Y=k(y)C(n). The exponents n were found to change from approximately 3 to approximately 6 when the pH was increased from 3 to 9 (at constant ionic strength 10(-2) M), although values as high as 10 were estimated when the NaCl concentration was reduced to 1 mM. Such values of n correlate well with the characteristics of the edge-to-face (E-F), edge-to-edge (E-E), and face-to-face (F-F) interparticle interactions. The minimum values of n correspond to maximum E-F attractions, whereas the largest n are associated with strong F-F repulsions. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.
