The PAVE LOW III aircraft is a modified HH-53H helicopter that has a low altitude--below 30.48 m (100 ft)--night/day rescue mission. The desired night flying configuration is for the pilot to wear night vision goggles (NVGs) to fly the aircraft while the copilot, without NVGs, observes the video display and monitors the aircraft instruments. The problems of NVG incompatibility in the cockpit were successfully countered using several light control techniques. The light control modifications were evaluated on the ground in the PAVE LOW III helicopter at Kirtland AFB in April, 1980, by PAVE LOW instructor pilots. The evaluation results were extremely positive.

Environmental influences on the developing primary visual cortex of kittens were studied by exposing dark reared kittens to prism-induced interocular rotational disparities of 32 degrees, the visual input rotated equally and oppositely in the two eyes. The present report describes preliminary results obtained from two kittens that received this altered visual exposure during 1-6 hours each day from 4 until 12 weeks of age. Subsequent single-unit recordings from the striate cortex revealed three major changes in functional cortical visual physiology. First, there was a disruption in binocularity, with many more cells being monocularly driven in the rotated conditions compared to control conditions. Second, there was an increased variance in the distribution of cells' interocular differences in preferred stimulus orientation (interocular orientation disparity, or IOD) as compared to control conditions. Third, changes were noted in orientation tuning and in the distribution of orientation preferences: cells most selective for orientation tended to be in the extreme ocular dominance groups, and monocular cells were often the most highly selective; also, both binocular and monocular cells showed a tendency for preferred orientations for both eyes to fall near the horizontal or vertical (+/- 22.5 degrees). Thus, a large optically-induced orientation disparity between the two eyes' visual fields during the critical period can modify the characteristics of striate cortical neurons, particularly binocularity and IOD. In addition, these results indicate that an inherent cortical mechanism may ensure the encoding of horizontal and vertical orientation specificities for a subclass of primary visual cortical neurons.
Increasing numbers of young people are being attracted to organized sports. Racquet sports, as they are individual sports, will give a lifetime of continual pleasure. Increasing numbers of eye injuries are being seen, however. Now that adequate eye protection is available, it behooves all physicians who are interested in prevention of eye injury to encourage players to wear polycarbonate or industrial safety thickness lenses, or protective face cages in suitable sports frames, to prevent any of the catastrophic, serious, and blinding eye injuries seen in the past.
The new stereophotometric method for the determination of the parameters of the protective goggles with the use of the system of mirrors is analyzed. The formulae for the calculation of the spatial coordinates of reference points on the human head and face and for the conversion of the coordinates of the mirror image into those of the real image are presented. The stereophotometric equipment for the realization of this method is described. The results of the experiment carried out to determine the accuracy of the calculation of spatial coordinates are presented.

Spectacles with moisture chambers for the treatment of dry keratitis. The dry corneal syndrome is very much improved by the creation of a humid "microclimate" maintained by cutaneous transpiration. The placing of spectacles with sealed shells allows these conditions to be achieved. Post operative glasses for aphakic patients. The placing of optical glasses immediately after surgery of the cataract helps the comfort of the aphake very much. These provisional glasses with lateral shells have adjustable, extensible sides, glasses are interchangeable. Centering is excellent.
In no sense should an industrial vision program be considered a means of providing visual ease, comfort for off-the-job activities such as viewing television.

The photosensitizer, 8-Methoxypsoralen, binds reversibly to a greater extent to human serum albumin than to human lens in the absence of UVA irradiation. Since experimental and clinical evidence suggests that peak levels in skin exceed those in plasma, which in turn exceed those in the lens, 5 to 10 fold more UVA is required to induce lenticular injury than to produce a threshold skin effect. To prevent the potential photoactivation of residual of 8-MOP in the lens, UVA opaque wraparound sunglasses should be worn for 24 hours after drug ingestion. Glasses with limited UVA transmission but good visible transmission should be worn after the 24 hour period following drug ingestion or indoors during the first 24 hours as a substitute for the wraparound. Every effort should be made to insure complete compliance in the wearing of UVA photoprotective lenses by all psoralen photosensitized patients.
