Particles sliding on a fluctuating surface: phase separation and power laws

We study a system of hard-core particles sliding locally downwards on a fluctuating one-dimensional surface characterized by a dynamical exponent z and no overall tilt. In numerical simulations, an initially random particle density is found to coarsen and obey scaling with a growing length scale approximately t(1/z). The structure factor deviates from the Porod law for the models studied. The steady state is unusual in that the density-segregation order parameter shows strong fluctuations. The two-point correlation function has a scaling form with a cusp at small argument which we relate to a power law distribution of particle cluster sizes. Exact results on a related model of surface depths provide insight into this behavior.

Critical-point phase separation in laser ablation of conductors.

Laser ablation due to an ultrashort laser pulse on a massive aluminum target was investigated by means of a one-dimensional fluid code. Clear separation between the ablated matter and the unablated target is seen to occur through spinodal decomposition involving thermodynamic instabilities near the critical point of aluminum. The code also shows that the end of the ablation process is preceded by the ejection of droplets, which form about 15% of the total ejected mass.

Helfrich repulsion and dynamical phase separation of multicomponent lipid bilayers.

Thermal fluctuations of surfactant bilayers in an aqueous solution produce an effective, long-range repulsion that can lead to a continuous unbinding transition. We report on an optical interferometry study of the thermal fluctuations of multicomponent bilayers close to the unbinding transition. We find that, in contrast to the case of single-component bilayers, the thermal fluctuation spectrum of multicomponent bilayers does not agree with a continuous unbinding transition but instead indicates the proximity of an unbinding tricritical point.

Promoter-induced reactive phase separation in surface reactions.

Promoters are adsorbed mobile species which do not directly participate in a catalytic surface reaction, but can influence its rate. Often, they are characterized by strong attractive interactions with one of the reactants. We show that these conditions lead to a Turing instability of the uniform state and to the formation of reaction-induced periodic concentration patterns. Experimentally such patterns are observed in catalytic water formation on a Rh(110) surface in the presence of coadsorbed potassium.

Phase separation in a compressible 2D Ising model.

We perform a high precision Monte Carlo study of asymptotic domain growth in a compressible two-dimensional spin-exchange Ising model with continuous particle positions and zero total magnetization, and we investigate the effects of compressibility and lattice mismatch on the late-time domain growth law, R(t) = A + Bt(n). For mismatched systems, we measure significant deviations from the theoretically expected n = 1/3 late-time growth (n = 0.224 +/- 0.004), and for a compressible model with no mismatch, we measure only a slight deviation from n = 1/3. These results strongly suggest that the current understanding of the classes of domain growth is incomplete.

Two genetically separable phases of growth inhibition induced by blue light in Arabidopsis seedlings.

High fluence-rate blue light (BL) rapidly inhibits hypocotyl growth in Arabidopsis, as in other species, after a lag time of 30 s. This growth inhibition is always preceded by the activation of anion channels. The membrane depolarization that results from the activation of anion channels by BL was only 30% of the wild-type magnitude in hy4, a mutant lacking the HY4 BL receptor. High-resolution measurements of growth made with a computer-linked displacement transducer or digitized images revealed that BL caused a rapid inhibition of growth in wild-type and hy4 seedlings. This inhibition persisted in wild-type seedlings during more than 40 h of continuous BL. By contrast, hy4 escaped from the initial inhibition after approximately 1 h of BL and grew faster than wild type for approximately 30 h. Wild-type seedlings treated with 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)-benzoic acid, a potent blocker of the BL-activated anion channel, displayed rapid growth inhibition, but, similar to hy4, these seedlings escaped from inhibition after approximately 1 h of BL and phenocopied the mutant for at least 2.5 h. The effects of 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)-benzoic acid and the HY4 mutation were not additive. Taken together, the results indicate that BL acts through HY4 to activate anion channels at the plasma membrane, causing growth inhibition that begins after approximately 1 h. Neither HY4 nor anion channels appear to participate greatly in the initial phase of inhibition.
