[Socio-hygienic characteristics of families from the rural regions of Uzbekistan].

For the purpose of obtaining a socio-economic characteristic of a rural family a complex survey has been conducted in three regions of the Uzbek Republic covering all families having children of early age. The findings showed that in rural areas of the republic women marry early and the birth spacing in 74-78 percent of women does not exceed 2 years. Rural women deliver babies during the whole period of reproductive age but when they reach the age of 28-30 the birth spacing increases. All rural families tend to have many children and there is no evidence that they might shift to having less children in the nearest years. About 60 percent of rural families have two babies under 3 years of age. Living and socio-economic conditions of most rural families are estimated as poor. Most of these families have many children, their health culture is poor and medical activity slow. Many of these families preserve old, at times negative traditions. The demographic development of a rural family does not correspond to the level of socio-economic development of the rural area. All this contributes to the formation of a slow dynamic lifestyle concentrated on narrow family interests. As a whole an average rural Uzbek family lags behind other such families from industrial regions of the country as far as their cultural and socio-economic development is concerned, and to overcome this backwardness it is necessary to create real conditions for more active involvement of population in different spheres of social and public activities.

[Infections of the breast].

The authors present their experiences of 45 female patients under the treatment of an acute purulent mastitis in five years period. From 45 treated female patients 8 (17.7%) were treated clinically, and 37 (82.2%) in the outpatient department. At the age to 35 years old, there were 87% of female patients from which 79.2% who bore the first child, and 21.7% of those who bore more than one child. From an acute lactic mastitis were treated 39 (86.6%) from which 2 (4.4%) were young girls, and 4 (8.8%) patients with already finished period of reproduction. Right-side localization of the pathological process was in 22 (48.8%) cases, left-side in 19 (42.2%) cases, and both-sides in 4 (8.8%) cases. In 15 (33.3%) female patients we have followed an immunological status. It is characteristic an immunological disbalance in acute phase. Following the immunological status, it can be useful for estimating and prognosis in treatment. In literature, there are quotation details of purulent diseases, among which breast infection takes a considerable place from 1.6 to 18%, and the death-rate is described in high percentage from 9.6 to 1.7%. Our attitude in the treatment of breast infection, especially when purulent process is present, as first we have to evacuate the suppuration, then to make good breast drainage, and separately to infiltrate the tissue because there are small abscesses in it, which bring to dissemination of pus within the breast. According to all mentioned above, we also give an antibiotic therapy.

[Properties of the energy-allowance enzymes of the common frog in different physiological body states. I. Adenosine triphosphatase and succinate dehydrogenase activities].

The activity of SDG, Na, K-ATPase and Mg-ATPase of the grass frog was determined in January, March and May, the number of animals examined being 30-40 in either series of experiments. In May (period of reproduction) the average activity of the above enzymes was higher than in January and March. This was observed both in males and females. A correlation between enzymatic activities of each single organism in March and May significantly increased. The role of these changes in the increase of viability of the organism is discussed.

Morphometric changes in the duodenal microvillous surface area of the non-pregnant, pregnant and lactating female rat.

In the present study an attempt has been made to describe the morphometrical changes occurring in the microvilli of the duodenum of rats of different ages and periods of reproduction. The data showed that the microvillous surface area in the duodenum was greatest in senescent rats and lowest in adult and old animals. The values for lactating rats were similar to that for the senescent group. There was a direct correlation between the microvillous surface area with the height and density. By contrast, however, there was a negative correlation between the width and density of the duodenal microvilli.

[Seasonal variability in the cholinergic reaction of the frog heart].

Seasonal changes in sensitivity to acetylcholine were studied on the isolated frog ventricle. The highest sensitivity was observed in autumn and winter (November-January). In spring, from the period of reproduction, the sensitivity to acetylcholine drops to-threefold and remains at a low level until September. Seasonal changes were more obvious in females. The observed seasonal changes are discussed with reference to ecology, state of reproductive system, etc.

Tidally rhythmic behaviour of marine animals.

The best general hypothesis for the control of 'spontaneous' tidal and daily patterns of behaviour in coastal animals postulates an endogenous physiological pacemaker system which generates approximate periodicity, together with environmental adjustment of the clock(s) to local time. Free-running endogenous rhythms of circatidal, circadian, circasemilunar and circalunar periodicity have been demonstrated in a number of species in constant laboratory conditions, in some cases clarifying hitherto poorly understood aspects of the behavioural repertoire of animals in the sea. Entrainment of circatidal rhythmicity has been demonstrated using cycles of simulated tidal variables such as temperature, hydrostatic pressure, salinity and wave action. The crab Carcinus shows increased locomotor activity after changes of salinity (halokinesis); responses to 34% salinity entrain the endogenous clock, but responses to salinities above or below 34% are purely exogenous and do not persist in constant conditions after entrainment. Phase responsiveness of circatidal rhythms to pulses of tidal variables has been demonstrated in several species; phase response curves show marked differences from those of circadian rhythms. The endogenous basis of tidal and diel behaviour in marine molluscs and crustaceans involves matching spontaneous rhythms of neuroelectrical activity. Also, in decapod crustaceans a peptidic neurodepressing hormone (NDH) modulates neuroelectrical and behavioural rhythmicity. NDH is produced rhythmically in the eyestalk neurosecretory complex, perhaps partly under the control of other clock components elsewhere in the CNS. The physiological basis of circasemilunar, lunar (and annual) rhythms of behaviour has not been studied, but studies of synchronization of these rhythms have been undertaken. In some localities it has been shown experimentally that light intensities equivalent to moonlight are sufficient to entrain such rhythms. In other localities where moonlight is a less reliable cue the relative timing of tidal and daily variables has been shown to be important. So far there is no evidence that synchronization is achieved by absolute differences between tidal variables at neap and spring tides.
