As part of efforts toward developing the synthesis of novel corrole analogues, the new triazatetrabenzcorrole (TBC) phosphorus(V) compounds (BuO)8(TBC)P(OCH3)2 (3), [(BuO)8(TBC)P(OH)]+OH- (4) ((BuO)8TBC=3,6,10,13,17,20,24,27-octabutoxytriazatetrabenzcorrolate), and [(BuO)8Cl8(TBC)P(OH)]+OH- (7) ((BuO)8Cl8TBC=3,6,10,13,17,20,24,27-octabutoxy-4,5,11,12,18,19,25,26-octachlorotriazatetrabenzcorrolate) were prepared. These TBCs were synthesized via a ring-contraction reaction mediated by PBr3 in pyridine in which a meso-nitrogen atom is extruded from an appropriate phthalocyanine precursor. Two of the compounds prepared, 3 and 4, are contracted analogues of the parent phthalocyanine (BuO8)PcH2 (1) 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octabutoxy-29H,31H-phthalocyanine, which has been shown for the first time to be susceptible to ring-contraction despite the potential steric crowding imposed by the butoxy substituents. Likewise, the octachloro-substituted (BuO8)Cl8PcH2 (6), 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octabutoxy-2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octachlorophthalocyanine, has also been shown to smoothly afford 7 via the same ring-contraction method. In addition, a rare example of a bona fide phosphorus(V) phthalocyanine, [(BuO)8(Pc)P(OCH3)2]+OH- (2), has been prepared for spectroscopic comparisons with the TBC compounds. These molecules are all extremely soluble in common organic solvents because of the octabutoxy substituents and have been characterized in detail by 1H NMR, 31P NMR, UV-vis, MALDI-MS, elemental analysis, and electrochemical studies. A clear trend in the phosphorus chemical shifts for 5 versus 6 coordination has been delineated: 31P NMR for 2, -179.8; 3, -186.1; 4, -105.1; and 7, -105.1. These data are compared to the 31P chemical shifts for related porphyrinoid(P(V)) molecules. The MALDI-MS data reveal the tendency of the TBC macrocycles to ionize as the radical cations (M(+*)) and has been useful in determining the axial ligands at phosphorus. A consequence of ring-contraction is reflected in the dramatic red-shifts (approximately 200 nm) observed for the Soret bands of the TBC compounds relative to the parent phthalocyanines. The magnitude of the red-shift is much greater than that reported for other TBCs. In addition, insertion of phosphorus causes a large red-shift in the Q-band of 2 found at 889 nm compared to 760 nm for 1. Cyclic voltammetry of the compounds in this study reveals multiple oxidation and reduction waves for each compound, and some interesting trends in redox potentials have been observed. The CV data for the octachloro-substituted compounds 6 and 7 show that the Cl substituents have an expected strong electron-withdrawing effect on the macrocycles. In general, the TBC compounds are significantly easier to oxidize and harder to reduce than the Pc counterparts, supporting the notion that corrole-type macrocycles favor higher oxidation states.

Phytic acid (PA), a major phosphorus storage compound of most seeds and cereal grains, contributes about 1 to 7% of their dry weight. It may account for more than 70% of the total kernel phosphorus. PA has the strong ability to chelate multivalent metal ions, especially zinc, calcium, and iron. The binding can result in very insoluble salts that are poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, which results in poor bioavailability (BV) of minerals. Alternatively, the ability of PA to chelate minerals has been reported to have some protective effects, such as decreasing iron-mediated colon cancer risk and lowering serum cholesterol and triglycerides in experimental animals. Data from human studies are still lacking. PA is also considered to be a natural antioxidant and is suggested to have potential functions of reducing lipid peroxidation and as a preservative in foods. Finally, certain inositol phosphates, which may be derived from PA, have been noted to have a function in second messenger transduction systems. The potential nutritional significance of PA is discussed in this review.
Races of the fungus Macrosporium solani Ell. et Mart., inducing tomato macrosporiosis, differ from one another with respect to sources of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur nutrition. Mono- and disaccharides and nitrates and organic forms of nitrogen were found to be most suitable for culture of the races. Addition of compounds containing phosphorus and sulfur to artificial nutrient media stimulates the growth of mycelium.
Phosphorus-31 NMR has been applied to the characterization of terminal phosphates on fragments of calf thymus DNA induced by three different nuclease systems: DNase I, DNase II and the artificial nuclease 'Mn-TMPyP/KHSO5'. In this last case, the oxidative damage to deoxyribose leads to two monophosphates esters (at the 3' and 5' ends) on both sides of the cleavage site. This method constitutes a promising approach to visualise the phosphate termini generated in DNA or RNA cleavage by cytotoxic drugs or chemical nucleases and provides a novel insight into the molecular aspects of their mechanism of action.

A glass of nominal composition (wt%) 17.25 MgO-52.75 3CaO.P2O5-30 SiO2 and a glass-ceramic obtained from it showed surface modifications when immersed in an acellular medium having a composition similar to that of human blood plasma. A (Ca, P)-rich layer, with an approximate Ca/P atomic ratio of 1.7, identified as hydroxyapatite, developed on both samples. The precipitated film on the glassy sample was weakly bonded, whereas that formed on the glass-ceramic was strongly adherent. The apatite precipitated during the in vitro tests on both samples grew as a needle-like structure with crystals about 150-200 nm long and 50-70 nm thick, as measured on specimens soaked for 1 month in the simulated body fluid (SBF). The presence of calcium and phosphate ions in the SBF contributed to the precipitation of the (Ca, P)-rich layers on both specimens.

White phosphorus is a combustible solid that is used in many of the smoke devices that are prevalent throughout the military arsenal. Exposure to phosphorus-containing compounds causes serious, often fatal, burns and can be the source of significant morbidity and lengthy hospital stays. I present the case of an individual with serious cutaneous phosphorus burns suffered at a munitions manufacturing plant. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the emergent treatments necessary in such patients and to discuss decontamination in the phosphorus-burned patient. Phosphorus-containing munitions are prevalent throughout the military arsenal, and all military physicians should be aware of these treatments.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used noninvasively to determine characteristic spectral parameters for untreated human brain tumors as a prelude to its use in clinical diagnosis. METHODS: The spectra, which reflect the relative amounts of phosphorus-containing compounds, and the pH within and surrounding the tumors, were obtained in vivo using the localization technique of one-dimensional chemical shift imaging applied with a surface coil. Phosphorus-31 chemical shift imaging was performed successfully in vivo on 9 volunteers and 27 patients with untreated brain tumors, including 7 with astrocytoma, 4 with glioblastoma, 3 with meningioma, and 11 with metastases. This study provides spectra from within and surrounding the brain tumors, and allows accountability for the heterogeneity of brain tumors by the selection of the maximum data point for each parameter. RESULTS: The ratios of resonance areas, phosphodiesters over nucleoside triphosphate (NTP), and phosphomonoesters over NTP, were found to be higher in glioblastomas (2.55 +/- 0.22, 1.06 +/- 0.09) and astrocytomas (3.04 +/- 0.36, 1.28 +/- 0.36) than in normal brain (2.00 +/- 0.32, 0.79 +/- 0.22). The ratios of areas due to inorganic phosphate and NTP, and phosphocreatine and NTP, also were higher in astrocytomas (1.16 +/- 0.40, 1.17 +/- 0.41) compared with glioblastomas (0.68 +/- 0.01, 0.88 +/- 0.19) and normal brain (0.61 +/- 0.03, 0.77 +/- 0.03). The pH of brain tumors ranged from alkaline to neutral, with meningiomas consistently having alkaline pH. CONCLUSIONS: These data show that there are statistically significant differences in the magnetic resonance parameters of the affected brain hemispheres of patients with astrocytomas, glioblastomas, meningiomas, and normal brain tissue, and underline the need for a multisite clinical trial to establish clinical criteria for diagnosis.
The reaction of PSCl3 with Pr(i)2NH at 60 degrees C affords the disubstitution product (Pr(i)2N)2P(S)Cl without first forming the monosubstitution product Pr(i)2NP(S)Cl2; a P(III) compound (possibly PCl3) generated in situ seems to be a crucial intermediate.
Phosphate triester derivatives of the anti-neoplastic alkyl lysophospholipids (ALP) have been prepared as novel potential therapeutic agents. In particular, simple, symmetrical phosphate triesters have been prepared, using phosphorochloridate chemistry. The compounds have been fully characterized by a range of techniques, and assayed for their inhibition of DNA synthesis by mammalian cells in culture. The compounds are generally inhibitory towards DNA synthesis in the micromolar range. However, the magnitude of the effect varies greatly with the phosphate structure. In particular, there is a clear trend towards decreasing activity with increasing alkyl chain length. Thus, short-chain dialkyl phosphate esters appear more effective than the reference compound hexadecyl phosphatidyl choline.
The reaction of the unsymmetrical ligands 1-diphenylphosphino-1'-(phenylsulfanyl)ferrocene and 1-diphenylphosphino-1'-(phenylselenyl)ferrocene, Fc(EPh)PPh2(E = S, Se), with several group 11 metal derivatives leads to the synthesis of complexes of the type [MX{Fc(EPh)PPh2}](M = Au, X = Cl, C6F5; M = Ag, X = OTf), (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate), [M{Fc(EPh)PPh2}2]X (M = Au, X = ClO4; M = Ag, X = OTf), [M(PPh3){Fc(EPh)PPh2}]OTf (M = Au, Ag), [Au2{Fc(SPh)PPh2}2](ClO4)2, [Au(C6F5)2{Fc(SePh)PPh2}]ClO4, [Au(C6F5)3{Fc(EPh)PPh2}], [Au2(C6F5)6{Fc(SePh)PPh2}] or [Cu{Fc(EPh)PPh2}2]PF6(E = S, Se). In these complexes coordination depends upon the metal centre; with gold it takes place predominantly to the phosphorus atom and with silver and copper to both phosphorus and chalcogen atoms. The treatment of some of the gold complexes with other metal centres affords heterometallic derivatives that in some cases are in equilibrium with the homometallic derivatives. Several compounds have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, four pairs of homologous compounds, yet not a single pair is isotypic. In many of them a three dimensional network is formed through secondary bonds such as hydrogen bonds, Au...Cl or Au...Se interactions. The complex [Ag(OTf){Fc(SePh)PPh2}] forms one-dimensional chains through trifluoromethanesulfonate bridging ligands.
