Analytical expressions for the changes of the erythrocyte and platelet concentration are calculated as blood flows through a single bifurcation. The effect of the separation surface, which divides the blood into the two daughter vessels, upon the concentration changes is studied. Numerical fitting to the experimental data shows that both the erythrocyte and platelet distributions across the vessel are nonuniform. The maximum of the erythrocyte concentration is in the core, and of the platelet concentration, in the vicinity of the wall. A separation surface that is convex towards the axis of the vessel yields better fit to the experimental data than a concave one. Together with other studies, this suggests that flow-divider geometry depends on flow conditions and the vessel diameters. The results can be used for estimation of the distribution of erythrocytes and platelets in the microvasculature.
A macromolecule of protein and chondroitin sulfate (PP-L) inhibits sedimentation of barium-polystyrene sulfonate (BaPSS) and of calcium phosphate at low but not at high values of gravity. Sedimentation of BaPSS removes a large fraction of PP-L from solution, but sedimentation of calcium phosphate does not. The results suggest entanglement among linear polyanionic chains.
In the laminar flow of a suspension of neutrally buoyant spheres through a bifurcation, intended as a simplified macroscopic model of the flow of blood, the concentration in the side branch is generally lower than in the main branch, and is affected primarily by the ratio of discharges in the two branches, the concentration up-stream, and by the branch size.
The thermophysical properties of fluorinated acrylate homopolymers are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical microscopy and discussed in terms of relative lengths of the fluorinated chain and the hydrocarbon spacer between the acrylate moiety and the fluorinated chain. These compounds exhibit an intrinsic microphase-separation (Isotropic+Isotropic morphology) occurring between the fluorinated chains and the acrylate polymer backbone. It is shown that the enthalpy of mixing is a function of the length of the lateral fluorocarbon chains. The thermophysical behaviour of these materials may be regarded as demixed systems exhibiting an Upper Critical Solution Temperature. The photopolymerization process of one of the monomer is studied by isothermal photocalorimetry. High acrylate double-bond conversion and fast curing rates were obtained thus demonstrating the promising use of these materials for coating and film processing applications using UV-curing techniques.
Past research conducted by Hasselmo et al. in 2002 suggests that some fundamental tasks are better accomplished if memories are encoded and recovered during different parts of the theta cycle. A model of the CA3 subfield of the hippocampus is presented, using biophysical representations of the major cell types including pyramidal cells and two types of interneurons. Inputs to the network come from the septum and the entorhinal cortex (directly and by the dentate gyrus). A mechanism for parsing the theta rhythm into two epochs is proposed and simulated: in the first half, the strong, proximal input from the dentate to a subset of CA3 pyramidal cells and coincident, direct input from the entorhinal cortex to other pyramidal cells creates an environment for strengthening synapses between cells, thus encoding information. During the second half of theta, cueing signals from the entorhinal cortex, by the dentate, activate previously strengthened synapses, retrieving memories. Slow inhibitory neurons (O-LM cells) play a role in the disambiguation during retrieval. We compare and contrast our computational results with existing experimental data and other contemporary models.
Poly(ether ester amide) (PEEA) copolymers based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), 1,4-butanediol, and dimethyl-7,12-diaza-6,13-dione-1,18-octadecanedioate (a diester-diamide monomer) were synthesized by a two-step polycondensation reaction. The obtained segmented copolymers are hydrophilic, with a water uptake of 24-340%. PEEA copolymers showed microphase separation, as observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The long spacing determined by small-angle X-ray scattering shows an increase in the hydrophilic domain size with increasing PEO content. By varying the copolymer composition, the E-modulus of PEEA could be varied between 61 and 427 MPa, with tensile strengths ranging from 12 to 39 MPa. The elongation at break can reach values up to 850%. The mechanical properties decrease with the uptake of water. However, PEEAs with a relatively low content of PEO still retain good tensile properties and are, in principle, suitable for biomedical applications.

Rheological studies of thin layers of biopolymers provide a principally new approach to the studies of the structure and functions of biomembranes. Rheological properties of interphase adsorption layers of lysozyme at different concentrations, temperatures and at the border with various carbohydrates. The values of moduli of fast elastic deformation E1s, slow elastic deformation E2s, equilibrium module of elasticity Es, viscosity of elastic aftereffect, plastic viscosity eta 0s and eta s for the interphase layers of lysozyme at liquid borders show that the interphase adsorption layers were solidlike, and the moduli of dimeric structure evaluated as volume ones correspond to the characteristics of normal elastomeres.
