Fabrication of advanced fiber Bragg gratings by use of sequential writing with a continuous-wave ultraviolet laser source.

We present a novel scheme based on sequential writing for fabrication of advanced fiber Bragg gratings. As opposed to earlier sequential methods this technique uses a cw UV laser source and allows for very precise control and repetitivity of the formation of the gratings. Furthermore it is possible to use high average irradiances without destroying the fiber, resulting in considerable reduction in fabrication time for complex gratings. The method has been applied to several test gratings, which proved its versatility and quality.

Thermal properties and crystallization dynamics of a phase-change alloy for write-once optical data storage.

Using a two-laser static tester, we measured the crystallization temperature and the thermal conductivity of a phase-change alloy thin film used in write-once-read-many media of optical data storage. The experimental technique, in general, and the calibration procedures, in particular, are described. The measurement results are used as entry points into numerical calculations that ultimately yield estimates of the material parameters. Valuable information about the dynamics of mark formation (i.e., localized crystallization) in amorphous phase-change alloy films is obtained from the observed variations of the sample reflectance under short-pulse and long-pulse recording conditions. The dependence of these reflectance variations on the laser pulse power has also been investigated.

Direct writing of microlenses in polycarbonate with excimer laser ablation.

A method for fabricating microlenses in polycarbonate material is reported. Using a direct-write technique based on scanning excimer laser ablation with a circular beam, we can etch an arbitrary shape in the polymer material. The beam is obtained by imaging a circular aperture onto the polymer surface, and scanning is realized by the translation stage carrying the sample, which makes successive contours with well-chosen diameters and scan velocities. Afterward, to smooth the ablated surface and release it from debris, a large beam aperture covering the full lens area is used to ablate the lens deeper into the substrate. The fabrication process and the characterization method are described, including calculation of the contour set for a desired lens shape. The optical performance is evaluated by Mach-Zehnder interferometry, showing that aberrations below lambda/10 are possible for slow lenses.

Two-point source interferometric grating writing.

A novel grating-writing interferometer is demonstrated. This interferometer is compact, stable, and tunable well over 1000 nm and does not suffer from the inherent path-length differences that are present in other methods. It allows for high-quality gratings to be inscribed by preventing light from unwanted orders from affecting the fringe pattern. This technique is used to introduce a novel method of apodization based on removing the Fresnel end reflections in a grating. The experimental evidence proves the concept and shows that the technique is potentially useful for Bragg-grating inscription.

Performance of a write-once multilayer optical disk that uses transparent recording material with an optical switching layer.

A volumetric optical disk that has multiple transparent films with optical switching layers is used as a recording medium to increase the number of recording layers. In the disk the optical switching layer is adapted to reduce decay of laser energy and increase reading and recording sensitivity. Well-defined marks of approximately 100-nm depth can be placed precisely on the transparent films by a focused laser beam. Writing and reading of a four-layer recordable disk, fabricated by molding and spin bonding, have been demonstrated experimentally. The volumetric disk can achieve a high recording capacity with conventional optical pickups.

Complex fiber grating structures fabricated by sequential writing with polarization control.

We propose a flexible method for fabricating complex fiber grating structures based on sequential writing for fiber gratings with polarization control of the UV source beam. Pure apodized as well as arbitrary phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) can be fabricated in a single scan. Experimental examples of raised-cos2 apodized and dispersionless FBG filters are given to demonstrate the feasibility of this method.

One-off writing of multimicrogratings on glass by two interfered femtosecond laser pulses.

Multimicrogratings are one-off written on silicate glass by two interfered femtosecond pulsed laser beams with the aid of a mask. The period and depth of the multimicrogratings are revealed by optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The depth is dependent on both the colliding angle between the two interfered laser beams and the laser pulse energy, but the period relies on the colliding angle only. We also observe a series of grooves formed at the middle of each bulge of the multimicrogratings and attribute it to the higher-order modulation arising from second-harmonic generation of the femtosecond laser pulse during the one-off writing processes.

Hydrogen loading for fiber grating writing with a femtosecond laser and a phase mask.

The threshold for the fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings with ultrafast 800-nm radiation and a phase mask was studied in SMF-28 and all-silica core fiber by use of 125-fs pulses. High-pressure molecular hydrogen loading (H2 loading) was observed to significantly lower the grating writing threshold in standard Ge-doped telecommunication fiber. No reduction was observed with all-silica core fiber. The index change appeared to be confined to the Ge-doped core region of the fiber. Gratings in H2-loaded SMF-28 had thermal annealing behavior similar to UV-induced gratings. Unlike UV-induced H2-loaded gratings, no absorption associated with Ge-OH defect formation was observed.

Direct laser writing defects in holographic lithography-created photonic lattices.

As a well-established laser fabrication approach, holographic lithography, or multibeam interference patterning, is known for its capability to create long-range ordered large-volume photonic crystals (PhCs) rapidly. Its broad use is, however, hampered by difficulty in inducing artificially designed defects for device functions. We use pinpoint femtosecond laser ablation to remove and two-photon photopolymerization to add desired defective features to obtain photonic acceptors and photonic donors, respectively, in an otherwise complete PhC matrix produced by holographic lithography. The combined use of the two direct laser writing technologies would immediately make holographic lithography a promising industrial tool for PhC manufacture.

Polarization multiplexed write-once-read-many optical data storage in bacteriorhodopsin films.

In polymeric films of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) a photoconversion product, which was named the F620 state, was observed on excitation of the film with 532 nm nanosecond laser pulses. This photoproduct shows a strong nonlinear absorption. Such BR films can be used for write-once-read-many (WORM) optical data storage. We demonstrate that a photoproduct similar or even identical to that obtained with nanosecond pulses is generated on excitation with 532 nm femtosecond pulses. This photoproduct also shows strong anisotropic absorption, which facilitates polarization storage of data. The product is thermally stable and is irretrievable to the initial B state either by photochemical reaction or through a thermal pathway. The experimental results indicate that the product is formed by a two-photon absorption process. Optical WORM storage is demonstrated by use of two polarization states, but more polarization states may be used. The combination of polarization data multiplexing and extremely short recording time in the femtosecond range enables very high data volumes to be stored within a very short time.

Writing 40 nm marks by using a beaked metallic plate near-field optical probe.

We have developed a near-field optical probe that uses a triangular metallic plate with a three-dimensionally tapered apex as a light source for thermally assisted magnetic recording. Numerical analysis using a finite-element method shows that the size of the optical spot generated at the apex is 15 nm x 20 nm, and the efficiency (defined as the ratio between the power of the optical near field at the surface of the recording medium and that of the incident light) is 15% when the incident light is focused by a lens with a numerical aperture of 0.8. The metallic plate was fabricated on the surface of a quartz slider and used for writing marks on a phase change recording medium. The marks were observed with a scanning electron microscope, and we confirmed that marks with a diameter of 40 nm were successfully written on the medium.

Waveguide electro-optic modulator in fused silica fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing and thermal poling.

An integrated electro-optic waveguide modulator is demonstrated in bulk fused silica. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer waveguide structure is fabricated by direct writing with a femtosecond laser followed by thermal poling. A 20 degrees electro-optic phase shift is achieved at an operating wavelength of 1.55 microm with an applied voltage of 400 V and an interaction length of 25.6 mm, which correspond to an estimated effective electro-optic coefficient of 0.17 pm/V for the TE-polarized mode.

3D-2D-3D photonic crystal heterostructures fabricated by direct laser writing.

Using direct laser writing, we fabricate photoresist templates for 3D-2D-3D photonic crystal heterostructures for what we believe to be the first time. The optical properties of these structures are directly compared with the theoretical ideal, revealing good agreement and hence good sample quality. This provides an experimental starting point for the microfabrication and testing of broadband, 3D air-waveguide microcircuitry in photonic bandgap materials.

Incoherent and coherent writing and erasure of cavity solitons in an optically pumped semiconductor amplifier.

Cavity solitons in semiconductor amplifiers were, from the beginning of their study and observation, obtained either spontaneously or in a controlled manner by local coherent excitation. We describe two experiments that demonstrate coherent and, we believe for the first time, incoherent writing and erasure of cavity solitons in an optically pumped vertical-cavity semiconductor amplifier by short optical pulses.

Ultrafast laser waveguide writing: Lithium niobate and the role of circular polarization and picosecond pulse width.

For the first time to our knowledge, ultrafast laser writing has generated room-temperature stable guided-wave optics in bulk lithium niobate for the telecommunication spectrum. Among a seven-dimensional parameter space for waveguide optimization, two frequently overlooked parameters, pulse duration and polarization, were found to be key in overcoming undesired nonlinear optical responses imposed by this material. Single-mode waveguides were best formed with circularly polarized light having a relatively long pulse duration of approximately 1.0 ps. The waveguides were highly polarization dependent and guided in both telecommunication bands near 1300 and 1550 nm, exhibiting losses as low as 0.7 dB/cm.

Femtosecond laser direct writing of multiwavelength Bragg grating waveguides in glass.

Novel Bragg grating waveguide structures have been fabricated in bulk borosilicate glass through a type II photosensitivity mechanism driven by single femtosecond laser pulses. Low-loss single-mode waveguides and narrow-linewidth Bragg gratings were generated simultaneously by forming an array of refractive index voxels in a single laser scan. Laser pulse duration is shown to significantly affect the grating strength and waveguide loss. Bragg wavelengths, defined by the periodicity of laser-modified volumes, were fully controlled by the sample scan speed to provide resonances anywhere in the 1200-1620 nm telecommunication bands. Four linear Bragg filters with distinct resonant wavelengths are presented that define the first demonstration of laser writing of multiple-wavelength and cascaded Bragg grating waveguides in a single process step.
