[Effect of vibration on gamma-aminobutyric acid metabolism in the brain in various functional conditions of the adrenal cortex].

The low-frequency vibration during 30 min (20 Hz, A = 0.4 mm) has been studied for its influence on the level of components of the GABA system and dicarbonic ++amino acids in male rats at hypo- and hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex. It is shown that under these conditions of the experiment the GABA level and glutamate-decarboxylase activity increase. Hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex against the background of vibration causes a relatively less pronounced increase in the GABA content, than the vibration alone or against the background of inhibition of adrenocortical function in the organism.

A functioning black adenoma of the adrenal cortex: a clinico-pathological entity.

A 25-year-old woman is described who had suspected hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex. She complained of fatiguability, excessive hair growth, and attacks of swelling of the face, hands, and ankles. Moreover she had a ;moon face', hypertension, a ;buffalo hump', and livid striae of the loins and hypogastrium. Adrenal function tests yielded values which could not be clearly interpreted. Operation showed a ;black adenoma' of the adrenal cortex on the right side. As far as it is known this is the first published case of this extremely rare lesion which was operated upon and caused nearly complete remission of the endocrine disturbance.

LONG-TERM ISOLATION STRESS IN RATS.

Rats isolated for long periods became nervous and aggressive and developed caudal dermatitis ( scaly tail). After 13 weeks of isolation, rats had heavier adrenals and thyroid and lighter spleen and thymus compared with rats kept in community cages. This indicates an endocrinopathy with hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex.
