Position of the American Dietetic Association: nutrition--an essential of medical education.

The public is increasingly nutrition conscious and actively seeks reliable sources of nutrition education. Physicians with appropriate training in nutrition can and should be a powerful force in providing accurate nutrition information and quality health care. As physician educators, dietetics professionals can facilitate this outcome. Appropriate use of nutrition resources and professionals will efficiently and effectively maintain or improve the nutritional status of the public and, ultimately, the health of our nation.

Nutrition standards in child care programs: technical support paper. The American Dietetic Association.

ADA supports achievement of comprehensive nutrition standards in child care programs. The standards recommended here focus on meeting the child's nutrition needs and providing a safe and pleasant environment that promotes acquisition of habits that prevent disease and enable healthy growth and development. Nutrition and health professionals can play a powerful role in advocating and assisting the acceptance of child care nutrition standards by parents, caregivers, foodservice personnel, and directors and policy makers for child care programs.

Position of the American Dietetic Association and the Canadian Dietetic Association: nutrition intervention in the care of persons with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

The goals of medical nutrition therapy in HIV disease include early assessment and treatment of nutrient deficiencies, maintenance and restoration of lean body mass, and support for activities of daily living and quality of life. The maintenance and restoration of nutritional stores are closely interrelated and interdependent with each of the other recommended medical therapies. Therefore, it is vital to the health of persons with HIV/AIDS to have access to the services of a registered dietitian, who is the essential member of the health care team for providing medical nutrition, therapy (49). The registered dietitian should take an active role in developing nutrition care protocols for HIV/AIDS in their practice setting. Dietetics professionals must take responsibility for obtaining and maintaining current knowledge in this area and should take the lead in translating current knowledge and research into practical and realistic nutrition guidelines for persons with HIV/AIDS. Further research is needed in the area of HIV/AIDS and nutrition. Registered dietitians and other members of the health care team are encouraged to conduct nutrition research in the area of nutrition interventions and the outcomes of nutrition therapy. Additionally, government health-related agencies, national AIDS-related organizations, and private industry should be encouraged to provide funding sources and support to the issue of research in nutrition-related problems and interventions in HIV/AIDS.

Key trends affecting the dietetics profession and the American Dietetic Association.

When an association faces its future, the information its board and leadership have about the world in which it must operate will shape their perceptions and influence their strategic thinking. One of the primary purposes of an environmental scan is to elucidate emerging issues and trends so that strategic attention can be focused on them. An environmental scan can also suggest emerging opportunities and challenges.
