The esthetic effect of orthodontic treatment in young patients may sometimes be incomplete without performing additional procedures related to the form and texture of the anterior teeth. Six young patients, aged 7 to 21 years, presented for orthodontic treatment to improve their dental esthetics. The problems of tooth staining, mutilation, congenitally missing teeth, tooth size/arch length discrepancy, and sequellae of dental trauma neccessitated a combined orthodontic-prosthodontic treatment. Changing morphology and texture by conservative prosthetic procedures proved to be a successful complement to orthodontic treatment.

UNLABELLED: Provisional restorations provide more than an intermediate functional and protective covering of teeth that have been prepared for indirect restorations. They provide the opportunity to build a relationship with the patient, to more clearly achieve the patient's aesthetic expectations, to build patient hygiene skills and habits, and to learn what is ideal for patients occlusally, phonetically, and aesthetically. This presentation examines the benefits of provisionalization and how to effectively communicate the information learned in this stage to the laboratory for replication in the definitive restorations. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: This article demonstrates how provisional restorations can be used to build a collaborative relationship between the prosthodontist, patient, dental specialists, and laboratory technician. Upon reading this article, the reader should: Understand how to use provisional restorations to develop patient expectations and to build a clear understanding of treatment goals. Understand how provisional restorations can be used to limit occlusal and phonetic difficulties that can occur in these restorations.

Restorative dental materials include the materials used to repair damaged teeth and/or replace missing teeth. The definition could be extended to include a much broader group of dental materials, but this paper concentrates only on those materials used to restore the crown portion of damaged teeth. Auxiliary materials, materials for removable denture prostheses, and root canal materials are excluded. Progress and recent research utilizing SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy), and some related methods are presented for the following dental materials: dental amalgam, enamel and dentin bonding agents, dental composites, dental cements, casting alloys for crowns and bridges, and ceramic-metal and ceramic restorative materials. In addition to the basic characterization of these materials by SEM/EDS techniques, examples of replication methods for SEM study of restorative materials in situ are discussed. Some examples are also presented in the direct use of SEM/EDS for characterization of changes and degradation of restorative materials which occur during clinical use.
