Prediction of the exact degree of internal carotid artery stenosis using an artificial neural network based on duplex velocity measurements.

Duplex ultrasound criteria use a combination of velocity measurements to evaluate internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. These evaluations divide ICA stenosis into broad categories. The aim of this study was to design an artificial neural network (ANN) capable of predicting the exact degree of ICA stenosis based on duplex velocity measurements. Consecutive patients with significant carotid atherosclerosis underwent carotid duplex ultrasound and angiography. Peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities in the ICA and common carotid artery were measured. Multilayered perceptron ANNs were constructed and trained to predict the degree of ICA stenosis and band the degree of ICA stenosis into 10% intervals based on these measurements. The accuracy of the ANN models in predicting the degree of ICA stenosis and classifying the ICA stenosis was compared with the angiographic degree of ICA stenosis and duplex velocity criteria. A total of 208 carotid bifurcations were studied. ANNs were able to accurately predict the degree of angiographic ICA stenosis (R2 = 0.9374, p < 0.0001) and band the ICA stenosis into the predefined 10% intervals [sensitivity 97.3% (95% CI 90.7-99.3), specificity 97.7 % (95% CI 93.6-99.2), accuracy 97.5%]. The ANN model was more accurate [discriminant power (DP) = 4.11] in banding the degree of ICA stenosis than duplex velocity criteria (DP = 1.67) (p < 0.05). The accuracy of the ANN in correctly identifying >70% ICA stenosis was 98.4% [sensitivity 96.4% (95% CI 93.8-99.3), specificity 98.7% (95% CI 93.4-99.8), DP = 4.21]. ANNs can accurately predict the degree of ICA stenosis. With further refinement, ANNs could replace velocity criteria in the assessment of ICA stenosis using duplex ultrasound.

Meteorologically adjusted ground level ozone trends in southern Taiwan.

Two methods were used to calculate the meteorologically adjusted ground level ozone trends in southern Taiwan. The first method utilized is a robust linear regression method. The second approach uses a multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network (ANN) method. The observations obtained from 16 monitoring stations were analyzed and divided into six groups by hierarchical divisive clustering procedure. The daily maximum 1 and 8 h ozone concentrations for each group are then calculated. The meteorologically adjusted trends obtained by linear regression and MLP methods are smaller than the unadjusted trends for all groups and average time. It indicts that the meteorological conditions in Taiwan tend to increase ambient ozone concentrations in recent years.

Combining neural network and genetic algorithm for prediction of lung sounds.

Recognition of lung sounds is an important goal in pulmonary medicine. In this work, we present a study for neural networks-genetic algorithm approach intended to aid in lung sound classification. Lung sound was captured from the chest wall of The subjects with different pulmonary diseases and also from the healthy subjects. Sound intervals with duration of 15-20 s were sampled from subjects. From each interval, full breath cycles were selected. Of each selected breath cycle, a 256-point Fourier Power Spectrum Density (PSD) was calculated. Total of 129 data values calculated by the spectral analysis are selected by genetic algorithm and applied to neural network. Multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network employing backpropagation training algorithm was used to predict the presence or absence of adventitious sounds (wheeze and crackle). We used genetic algorithms to search for optimal structure and training parameters of neural network for a better predicting of lung sounds. This application resulted in designing of optimum network structure and, hence reducing the processing load and time.

Classification of EMG signals using PCA and FFT.

In this study, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis was applied to EMG signals recorded from ulnar nerves of 59 patients to interpret data. The data of the patients were diagnosed by the neurologists as 19 patients were normal, 20 patients had neuropathy and 20 patients had myopathy. The amount of FFT coefficients had been reduced by using principal components analysis (PCA). This would facilitate calculation and storage of EMG data. PCA coefficients were applied to multilayer perceptron (MLP) and support vector machine (SVM) and both classified systems of performance values were computed. Consequently, the results show that SVM has high anticipation level in the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. It is proved that its test performance is high compared with MLP.

Wavelet-based neural network analysis of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals.

In this study, internal carotid arterial Doppler signals recorded from 130 subjects, where 45 of them suffered from internal carotid artery stenosis, 44 of them suffered from internal carotid artery occlusion and the rest of them were healthy subjects, were classified using wavelet-based neural network. Wavelet-based neural network model, employing the multilayer perceptron, was used for analysis of the internal carotid arterial Doppler signals. Multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used to detect stenosis and occlusion in internal carotid arteries. In order to determine the MLPNN inputs, spectral analysis of the internal carotid arterial Doppler signals was performed using wavelet transform (WT). The MLPNN was trained, cross validated, and tested with training, cross validation, and testing sets, respectively. All these data sets were obtained from internal carotid arteries of healthy subjects, subjects suffering from internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion. The correct classification rate was 96% for healthy subjects, 96.15% for subjects having internal carotid artery stenosis and 96.30% for subjects having internal carotid artery occlusion. The classification results showed that the MLPNN trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was effective to detect internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion.

Multi-space classification for predicting GPCR-ligands.

A classification of molecules depends on the descriptor set which is used to represent the compounds, and each descriptor could be regarded as one perception of a molecule. In this study we show that a combination of several classifiers that are grounded on separate descriptor sets can be superior to a single classifier that was built using all available descriptors. The task of predicting ligands of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) served as an example application. The perceptron, multilayer neural networks, and radial basis function (RBF) networks were employed for prediction. We developed classifiers with and without descriptor selection. Prediction accuracy was assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. In the case with descriptor selection both the selection and the rank order of the descriptors depended on the type and topology of the neural networks. We demonstrate that the overall prediction accuracy of the system can be improved by joining neural network classifiers of different type and topology using a "jury network" that is trained to evaluate the predictions from the individual classifiers. Seventy-one percent correct prediction of GPCR ligands was obtained.

Improvement of spike train decoder under spike detection and classification errors using support vector machine.

The successful decoding of kinematic variables from spike trains of motor cortical neurons is essential for cortical neural prosthesis. Spike trains from each single unit must be extracted from extracellular neural signals and, thus, spike detection and sorting procedure is indispensable but the detection and sorting may involve considerable error. Thus, a decoding algorithm should be robust with respect to spike train errors. Here, we show that spike train decoding algorithms employing nonlinear mapping, especially a support vector machine (SVM), may be more advantageous contrary to previous results which showed that an optimal linear filter is sufficient. The advantage became more conspicuous in the case of erroneous spike trains. Using the SVM, satisfactory training of the decoder could be achieved much more easily, compared to the case of using a multilayer perceptron, which has been employed in previous studies. Tests were performed on simulated spike trains from primary motor cortical neurons with a realistic distribution of preferred direction. The results suggest the possibility that a neuroprosthetic device with a low-quality spike sorting preprocessor can be achieved by adopting a spike train decoder that is robust to spike sorting errors.

On using feedforward neural networks for clinical diagnostic tasks.

In this paper we present an extensive comparison between several feedforward neural network types in the context of a clinical diagnostic task, namely the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) using planar thallium-201 dipyridamole stress-redistribution scintigrams. We introduce results from well-known (e.g. multilayer perceptrons or MLPs, and radial basis function networks or RBFNs) as well as novel neural network techniques (e.g. conic section function networks) which demonstrate promising new routes for future applications of neural networks in medicine, and elsewhere. In particular we show that initializations of MLPs and conic section function networks--which can learn to behave more like an MLP or more like an RBFN--can lead to much improved results in rather difficult diagnostic tasks.

Comparison of neural network predictors in the classification of tracheal-bronchial breath sounds by respiratory auscultation.

Despite extensive research in the area of identification and discrimination of tracheal-bronchial breath sounds by computer analysis, the process of identifying auscultated sounds is still subject to high estimation uncertainties. Here we assess the performance of the relatively new constructive probabilistic neural network (CPNN) against the more common classifiers, namely the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function network (RBFN), in classifying a broad range of tracheal-bronchial breath sounds. We present our data as signal estimation models of the tracheal-bronchial frequency spectra. We have examined the trained structure of the CPNN with respect to the other architectures and conclude that this architecture offers an attractive means with which to analyse this type of data. This is based partly on the classification accuracies attained by the CPNN, MLP and RBFN which were 97.8, 77.8 and 96.2%, respectively. We concluded that CPNN and RBFN networks are capable of working successfully with this data, with these architectures being acceptable in terms of topological size and computational overhead requirements. We further believe that the CPNN is an attractive classification mechanism for auscultated data analysis due to its optimal data model generation properties and computationally lightweight architecture.

Mortality assessment in intensive care units via adverse events using artificial neural networks.

OBJECTIVE: This work presents a novel approach for the prediction of mortality in intensive care units (ICUs) based on the use of adverse events, which are defined from four bedside alarms, and artificial neural networks (ANNs). This approach is compared with two logistic regression (LR) models: the prognostic model used in most of the European ICUs, based on the simplified acute physiology score (SAPS II), and a LR that uses the same input variables of the ANN model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A large dataset was considered, encompassing forty two ICUs of nine European countries. The recorded features of each patient include the final outcome, the case mix (e.g. age) and the intermediate outcomes, defined as the daily averages of the out of range values of four biometrics (e.g. heart rate). The SAPS II score requires 17 static variables (e.g. serum sodium), which are collected within the first day of the patient's admission. A nonlinear least squares method was used to calibrate the LR models while the ANNs are made up of multilayer perceptrons trained by the RPROP algorithm. A total of 13,164 adult patients were randomly divided into training (66%) and test (33%) sets. The two methods were evaluated in terms of receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: The event based models predicted the outcome more accurately than the currently used SAPS II model (P<0.05), with ROC areas within the ranges 83.9-87.1% (ANN) and 82.6-85.2% (LR) versus 80% (LR SAPS II). When using the same inputs, the ANNs outperform the LR (improvement of 1.3-2%). CONCLUSION: Better prognostic models can be achieved by adopting low cost and real-time intermediate outcomes rather than static data.

Interval estimation of urban ozone level and selection of influential factors by employing automatic relevance determination model.

In this work, we focus on simulating the ground-level ozone (O3) time series and its daily maximum concentration in Hong Kong urban air by employing the multilayer perceptron (MLP) model combined with the automatic relevance determination (ARD) method (for simplicity, we name it as MLP-ARD model). Two air quality monitoring sites in Hong Kong, i.e., Tsuen Wan and Tung Chung, are selected for the numerical experiments. The MLP-ARD model based on Bayesian evidence framework can provide reliable interval estimation of real observation as well as offering efficient strategy to avoid over-fitting. The performance comparisons between MLP-ARD model and traditional artificial neural network (ANN) model based on maximum likelihood indicate that MLP-ARD model is more powerful to capture the wild fluctuation of O3 level especially during O3 episodes than the traditional model. Furthermore, it can assess and rank the input variables for the prediction according to their relative importance to the output variable, i.e., the daily maximum O3 concentration in this study. The preliminary experimental results indicate that nitric oxide (NO) and solar radiation are the most important input variables for O3 prediction at both selected sites. In addition, the previous daily maximum O3 level is also important for Tung Chung site. In this regard, MLP-ARD model is a feasible tool to interpret the real physical and chemical process of urban O3 variation.

Classification of EEG signals using neural network and logistic regression.

Epileptic seizures are manifestations of epilepsy. Careful analyses of the electroencephalograph (EEG) records can provide valuable insight and improved understanding of the mechanisms causing epileptic disorders. The detection of epileptiform discharges in the EEG is an important component in the diagnosis of epilepsy. As EEG signals are non-stationary, the conventional method of frequency analysis is not highly successful in diagnostic classification. This paper deals with a novel method of analysis of EEG signals using wavelet transform and classification using artificial neural network (ANN) and logistic regression (LR). Wavelet transform is particularly effective for representing various aspects of non-stationary signals such as trends, discontinuities and repeated patterns where other signal processing approaches fail or are not as effective. Through wavelet decomposition of the EEG records, transient features are accurately captured and localized in both time and frequency context. In epileptic seizure classification we used lifting-based discrete wavelet transform (LBDWT) as a preprocessing method to increase the computational speed. The proposed algorithm reduces the computational load of those algorithms that were based on classical wavelet transform (CWT). In this study, we introduce two fundamentally different approaches for designing classification models (classifiers) the traditional statistical method based on logistic regression and the emerging computationally powerful techniques based on ANN. Logistic regression as well as multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) based classifiers were developed and compared in relation to their accuracy in classification of EEG signals. In these methods we used LBDWT coefficients of EEG signals as an input to classification system with two discrete outputs: epileptic seizure or non-epileptic seizure. By identifying features in the signal we want to provide an automatic system that will support a physician in the diagnosing process. By applying LBDWT in connection with MLPNN, we obtained novel and reliable classifier architecture. The comparisons between the developed classifiers were primarily based on analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves as well as a number of scalar performance measures pertaining to the classification. The MLPNN based classifier outperformed the LR based counterpart. Within the same group, the MLPNN based classifier was more accurate than the LR based classifier.

Prediction of target range of intact parathyroid hormone in hemodialysis patients with artificial neural network.

The application of artificial neural network (ANN) to predict outcome and explore potential relationships among clinical data is increasing being used in many clinical scenarios. The aim of this study was to validate whether an ANN is a useful tool for predicting the target range of plasma intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) concentration in hemodialysis patients. An ANN was constructed with input variables collected retrospectively from an internal validation group (n = 129) of hemodialysis patients. Plasma iPTH was the dichotomous outcome variable, either target group (150 ng/L 300 ng/L). After internal validation, the ANN was prospectively tested in an external validation group (n = 32) of hemodialysis patients. The final ANN was a multilayer perceptron network with six predictors including age, diabetes, hypertension, and blood biochemistries (hemoglobin, albumin, calcium). The externally validated ANN provided excellent discrimination as appraised by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.83 +/- 0.11, p = 0.003). The Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic was 5.02 (p= 0.08 > 0.05) which represented a good-fit calibration. These results suggest that an ANN, which is based on limited clinical data, is able to accurately forecast the target range of plasma iPTH concentration in hemodialysis patients.

Two-stage classification of respiratory sound patterns.

The classification problem of respiratory sound signals has been addressed by taking into account their cyclic nature, and a novel hierarchical decision fusion scheme based on the cooperation of classifiers has been developed. Respiratory signals from three different classes are partitioned into segments, which are later joined to form six different phases of the respiration cycle. Multilayer perceptron classifiers classify the parameterized segments from each phase and decision vectors obtained from different phases are combined using a nonlinear decision combination function to form a final decision on each subject. Furthermore a new regularization scheme is applied to the data to stabilize training and consultation.

Determining variability of ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals using Lyapunov exponents.

The new method presented in this study was directly based on the consideration that ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals are chaotic signals. This consideration was tested successfully using the nonlinear dynamics tools, like the computation of Lyapunov exponents. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) architecture was formulated and used as a basis for determining variabilities such as stenosis, ocular Behcet disease, and uveitis disease in the physical state of ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals. The computed Lyapunov exponents of the ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals were used as inputs of the MLPNN. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess the performance of the detection process. The ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals were classified with the accuracy varying from 93.75% to 97.06%. The results confirmed that the proposed MLPNN trained with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm has potential in detecting stenosis, Behcet disease and uveitis disease in ophthalmic arteries.

Feature extraction from Doppler ultrasound signals for automated diagnostic systems.

This paper presented the assessment of feature extraction methods used in automated diagnosis of arterial diseases. Since classification is more accurate when the pattern is simplified through representation by important features, feature extraction and selection play an important role in classifying systems such as neural networks. Different feature extraction methods were used to obtain feature vectors from ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial Doppler signals. In addition to this, the problem of selecting relevant features among the features available for the purpose of classification of Doppler signals was dealt with. Multilayer perceptron neural networks (MLPNNs) with different inputs (feature vectors) were used for diagnosis of ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial diseases. The assessment of feature extraction methods was performed by taking into consideration of performances of the MLPNNs. The performances of the MLPNNs were evaluated by the convergence rates (number of training epochs) and the total classification accuracies. Finally, some conclusions were drawn concerning the efficiency of discrete wavelet transform as a feature extraction method used for the diagnosis of ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial diseases.

On the neural network classification of medical data and an endeavour to balance non-uniform data sets with artificial data extension.

We studied the efficiency of multilayer perceptron networks to classify eight different medical data sets with typical problems connected to their strongly non-uniform distributions between output classes and relatively small sizes of training sets. We studied especially the possibility mentioned in the literature of balancing a class distribution by artificially extending small classes of a data set. The results obtained supported our hypothesis that principally this does somewhat improve the classification accuracy of small classes, but is also inclined to impair the classification accuracy of majority classes.

Tableting and stability evaluation of enteric-coated omeprazole pellets.

In this study, fluidized-bed manufactured enteric-coated omeprazole pellets were compressed into tablets. The stability of the pellets and those of compressed tablets were evaluated for remaining omeprazole and for degradation products under an accelerated stability protocol. The data were analyzed using the artificial neural network (ANN) and analysis of variance (ANOVA). It was found that enteric-coated omeprazole pellets could be compressed into quickly disintegrating tablets using microcrystalline cellulose granules as the pressure absorbing matrix. The ANN, using the multilayer perceptron model, predicted that there was a positive correlation between tablet crushing strength and microcrystalline cellulose concentration. Microcrystalline cellulose matrix showed a strong plastic deformation and all the pellets inside the tablet maintained their integrity with no significant change in their surface properties. Omeprazole degradation in acid medium was mainly dependent on microcrystalline cellulose concentration. A 90-day accelerated stability test in brown glass bottles with a desiccant showed that all prototype formulations would result in an acceptable stability profile for both remaining omeprazole, and also for the increase of impurity concentrations.
