Carbon under extreme conditions: phase boundaries and electronic properties from first-principles theory.

At high pressure and temperature, the phase diagram of elemental carbon is poorly known. We present predictions of diamond and BC8 melting lines and their phase boundary in the solid phase, as obtained from first-principles calculations. Maxima are found in both melting lines, with a triple point located at approximately 850 GPa and approximately 7,400 K. Our results show that hot, compressed diamond is a semiconductor that undergoes metalization upon melting. In contrast, in the stability range of BC8, an insulator to metal transition is likely to occur in the solid phase. Close to the diamond/liquid and BC8/liquid boundaries, molten carbon is a low-coordinated metal retaining some covalent character in its bonding up to extreme pressures. Our results provide constraints on the carbon equation of state, which is of critical importance for devising models of Neptune, Uranus, and white dwarf stars, as well as of extrasolar carbon-rich planets.

1998 SM165: a large Kuiper belt object with an irregular shape.

The recent discovery of an ancient reservoir of icy bodies at and beyond the orbit of Neptune-the Kuiper belt-has opened a new frontier in astronomy. Measurements of the physical and chemical nature of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) can constrain our ideas of the processes of planet formation and evolution. Our 1.8-m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope and charge-coupled device camera observations of the KBO 1998 SM(165) indicate its brightness periodically varies by 0.56 magnitudes over a 4-h interval. If we assume a uniform albedo of 0.04, which is typical of values found in the literature for a handful of KBOs, and an "equator-on" aspect, we find 1998 SM(165) has axes of length 600 x 360 km. If our assumptions are correct, such dimensions put 1998 SM(165) among the largest elongated objects known in our solar system. Perhaps long ago, two nearly spherical KBOs of comparable size coalesced to form a compound object, or perhaps 1998 SM(165) is the residual core of a catastrophic fragmentation of a larger precursor.

Influence of cycling cadence on subsequent running performance in triathletes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of different cycling cadences on metabolic and kinematic parameters during subsequent running. METHODS: Eight triathletes performed two incremental tests (running and cycling) to determine maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and ventilatory threshold (VT) values, a cycling test to assess the energetically optimal cadence (EOC), three cycle-run succession sessions (C-R, 30-min cycle + 15-min run), and one 45-min isolated run (IR). EOC, C-R, and IR sessions were realized at an intensity corresponding to VT + 5%. During the cycling bouts of C-R sessions, subjects had to maintain one of the three pedaling cadences corresponding to the EOC (72.5 +/- 4.6 rpm), the freely chosen cadence (FCC; 81.2 +/- 7.2 rpm), and the theoretical mechanical optimal cadence (MOC, 90 rpm; Neptune and Hull, 1999). RESULTS: Oxygen uptake (VO2) increased during the 30-min cycling only at MOC (+12.0%) and FCC (+10.4%). During the running periods of C-R sessions, VO2, minute ventilation, and stride-rate values were significantly higher than during the IR session (respectively, +11.7%, +15.7%, and +7.2%). Furthermore, a significant effect of cycling cadence was found on VO2 variability during the 15-min subsequent run only for MOC (+4.1%) and FCC (+3.6%). CONCLUSION: The highest cycling cadences (MOC, FCC) contribute to an increase in energy cost during cycling and the appearance of a VO2 slow component during subsequent running, whereas cycling at EOC leads to a stability in energy cost of locomotion with exercise duration. Several hypotheses are proposed to explain these results such as changes in fiber recruitment or hemodynamic modifications during prolonged exercise.

Shock compressing diamond to a conducting fluid.

Laser generated shock reflectance data show that diamond undergoes a continuous transition from optically absorbing to reflecting between Hugoniot pressures 600<P(H)<1000 GPa. The data are consistent with diamond having a thermal population of carriers at P(H) approximately 600 GPa, undergoing band overlap metallization at P(H) approximately 1000 GPa and melting at 800<P(H)<1000 GPa. The results agree well with an equation of state model that predicts that elemental carbon remains solid throughout the interior of Neptune.

Dose measurements and calculations of small radiation fields for 9-MV x rays.

Measurements of dose distribution for square fields with sizes ranging from 1 X 1 to 30 X 30 cm for a 9-MV x-ray beam from a Neptune 10 linear accelerator, manufactured by CGR, are reported. Special attention was paid to field sizes smaller than 4 X 4 cm, used in radiosurgery techniques. To express the dose-monitor units relationship, total, collimator, and phantom scatter correction factors were obtained by experimental measurements. A strong dependence of these factors on the smallest field sizes (less than 4 X 4 cm) was shown. Measurements of the maximum depth dose dmax, plotted as a function of field size, showed a maximum at about 5 X 5 cm, in good agreement with previous results. dmax was also measured for the smallest fields, demonstrating that the contaminating electron component of the x-ray beam was not responsible for the dmax shift. Analysis of the penumbra width of cross dose distributions, as a function of field sizes, allowed us to postulate that the dmax shift could be due to the phantom scattered photons, which in turn were generated by the collimator scattered photons. Newly derived tissue-maximum ratio and scatter-maximum ratio data were used for dose profile calculations of 2 X 2, 4 X 4, and 10 X 10 cm field sizes. The agreement between experimental and calculated data was found to be +/- 2% within the geometrical edges of the fields and +/- 6% outside of them. A dose profile from the isocenter of a 2 X 2 cm square field moving through a 360 degree rotation arc was obtained and compared with that from the center of a 125I shielded source, as measured by Ling. Advantages and problems relating to the use of x-ray beams from linear accelerators in radiosurgery are discussed.

The Kuiper belt and the solar system's comet disk.

Our planetary system is embedded in a small-body disk of asteroids and comets, vestigial remnants of the original planetesimal population that formed the planets. Once formed, those planets dispersed most of the remaining small bodies. Outside of Neptune, this process has left our Kuiper belt and built the Oort cloud, as well as emplacing comets into several other identifiable structures. The orbits in these structures indicate that our outer solar system's comet disk was shaped by a variety of different physical processes, which teach us about how the giant planets formed. Recent work has shown that the scattered disk is the most likely source of short-period comets. Moreover, a growing body of evidence indicates that the sculpting of the Kuiper belt region may have involved large-scale planetary migration, the presence of other rogue planetary objects in the disk, and/or the close passage of other stars in the Sun's birth cluster.

A population of comets in the main asteroid belt.

Comets are icy bodies that sublimate and become active when close to the Sun. They are believed to originate in two cold reservoirs beyond the orbit of Neptune: the Kuiper Belt (equilibrium temperatures of approximately 40 kelvin) and the Oort Cloud (approximately 10 kelvin). We present optical data showing the existence of a population of comets originating in a third reservoir: the main asteroid belt. The main-belt comets are unlike the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud comets in that they likely formed where they currently reside and may be collisionally activated. The existence of the main-belt comets lends new support to the idea that main-belt objects could be a major source of terrestrial water.

The Morphogenesis of Bands and Zonal Winds in the Atmospheres on the Giant Outer Planets

The atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune were modeled as shallow layers of turbulent fluid overlying a smooth, spherical interior. With only the observed values of radius, rotation rate, average wind velocity, and mean layer thickness as model parameters, bands and jets spontaneously emerged from random initial conditions. The number, width, and amplitude of the jets, as well as the dominance of anticyclonic vortices, are in good agreement with observations for all four planets.

Short-Period Comets: Primordial Bodies or Collisional Fragments?

Modeling results show that collisions among Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt Objects (EKOs), a vast swarm of small bodies orbiting beyond Neptune, have been a major process affecting this population and its progeny, the short-period comets. Most EKOs larger than about 100 kilometers in diameter survive over the age of the solar system, but at smaller sizes collisional breakup is frequent, producing a cascade of fragments having a power law size-frequency distribution. Collisions are also a plausible mechanism for injecting EKOs 1 to 10 kilometers in diameter into dynamical resonances, where they can be transported into the inner solar system to become short-period comets. The fragmental nature of these comets may explain their physical properties, such as shape, color, and strength.

Europa's magnetic signature: report from Galileo's pass on 19 December 1996.

On 19 December 1996 as Galileo passed close to Jupiter's moon, Europa, the magnetometer measured substantial departures from the slowly varying background field of Jupiter's magnetosphere. Currents coupling Europa to Jupiter's magnetospheric plasma could produce perturbations of the observed size. However, the trend of the field perturbations is here modeled as the signature of a Europa-centered dipole moment whose maximum surface magnitude is approximately 240 nanotesla, giving a rough upper limit to the internal field. The dipole orientation is oblique to Europa's spin axis. This orientation may not be probable for a field generated by a core dynamo, but higher order multipoles may be important as they are at Uranus and Neptune. Although the data can be modeled as contributions of an internal field of Europa, they do not confirm its existence. The dipole orientation is also oblique to the imposed field of Jupiter and thus not directly produced as a response to that field. Close to Europa, plasma currents appear to produce perturbations with scale sizes that are small compared with a Europa radius.

Interiors of giant planets inside and outside the solar system.

An understanding of the structure and composition of the giant planets is rapidly evolving because of (i) high-pressure experiments with the ability to study metallic hydrogen and define the properties of its equation of state and (ii) spectroscopic and in situ measurements made by telescopes and satellites that allow an accurate determination of the chemical composition of the deep atmospheres of the giant planets. However, the total amount of heavy elements that Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune contain remains poorly constrained. The discovery of extrasolar giant planets with masses ranging from that of Saturn to a few times the mass of Jupiter opens up new possibilities for understanding planet composition and formation. Evolutionary models predict that gaseous extrasolar giant planets should have a variety of atmospheric temperatures and chemical compositions, but the radii are estimated to be close to that of Jupiter (between 0.9 and 1.7 Jupiter radii), provided that they contain mostly hydrogen and helium.

Cellular response to metallic ions released from nickel-chromium dental alloys.

Concerns exist over the potential release of elevated levels of metal ions such as Ni and Be from Ni-Cr dental casting alloys, due to their susceptibility to accelerated corrosion. In this investigation, we evaluated the release of metal ions from four commercial Ni-Cr alloys, representing a range of compositions, in three-day cell culture tests. Metal ion release, as measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy, was correlated to changes in cellular morphology, viability, and proliferation. The results showed that the test alloys and their corrosion products did not affect cellular morphology or viabilities, but did decrease cellular proliferation. The types and amounts of metal ions released, which corresponded to the alloys' reported surface and corrosion properties, also correlated to observed decreases in cellular proliferation after 72 h. Neptune, which caused the smallest decrease in cellular proliferation as compared with control cells, released the lowest amount of corrosion products, due to its corrosion-resistant, high-Cr-Mo-containing, homogeneous surface oxide. The other test alloys, which were susceptible to accelerated corrosion processes, released higher levels of metal ions that correlated to larger decreases in thymidine incorporation. Metal ion levels increased with test time for all alloys but were not proportional to bulk alloy compositions. Ni ions were released at slightly higher than bulk alloy compositions, while Be was released at from four to six times that of bulk alloy compositions. The elevated release of Be ions was associated with reduced cellular proliferation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Dosimetry of total skin electron irradiation]

Elaboration of such a simple technique for total skin electron irradiation which ensures good dose homogeneity and minimal x-ray background dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We started large electron field irradiations with the Neptun 10p linear accelerator in the National Institute of Oncology -Budapest in 1986. After the installation of the Siemens Mevatron KD linear accelerator it was possible to introduce the modified Stanford technique. This technique satisfies better the requirements given in the objective. The required field size of 200x75 cm is produced as a result of two fields with 30 degrees angular separation (dual field) at a source skin distance of 465 cm. The patient's body is exposed to six dual electron fields. The electron energy is 6 MeV. Despite the long source skin distance the treatment time is relatively short due to the high dose rate (940 mu/min) capability of our Mevatron KD. The in air dose profiles were measured in miniphantom with semiconductor detector. Depth dose curves were measured in water and in polystyrene phantom with semiconductor detector and with films. RESULTS: The measured dose homogeneity of the 6 MeV energy dual field with 30 degrees angular separation is within +/- 5%in a 200x75cm plane field. The depth of dose maximum of the resulting dose distribution of six dual field irradiation is between 2 mm and 5 mm, while the depth of 80% isodose curve is about 8 mm. The total body x-ray background dose is less than 1% of the skin dose. CONCLUSION: The modified Stanford technique adapted to our Mevatron KD linear accelerator is suitable for total skin electron beam therapy.

[The influence of radiation doses on the results of radiosurgery of brain arteriovenous malformations].

Stereotactic radiosurgery as a method of treatment of inoperable brain angiomas has been in use in the Neurosurgery Department, Medical Academy in Lublin since 1990. The patients receive radiation from a Neptune 10P linear accelerator of 9 MeV photon energy (X radiation). The Laitinen stereoadapter used by us makes possible precise targeting and radiation application in time suitable for the patient and the whole treatment team. This frame produces no disturbances of CT image and is not covering the target. Non-invasive head immobilization in the frame is highly stable, although it requires good communication with the patient and his full cooperation. The purpose of the study was a comparison of the results of radiosurgery applied in the treatment of inoperable brain angiomas of various size with radiation doses 4000 cGy and 3000 cGy. The material comprises 40 first cases out of over 120 patients treated in this way for inoperable angiomas. The first group of 20 patients received 4000 cGy and the second group of 20 patients received 3000 cGy doses. Complete obliteration of angiomas was achieved in 16 (80%) cases treated with the 4000 cGy dose, and in 17 (85%) cases treated with the 3000 cGy dose. Late postradiation reactions developed in 15 (75%) patients in the first group with permanent changes in 5 (25%) patients. In the second group late postradiation reactions developed in only 6 (30%) cases and regressed in all. Treatment effectiveness (complete obliteration) after doses of 3000 and 4000 cGy was similar, and it decreased with greater size of angiomas. The per cent of postradiation complications after lower doses was much smaller, and permanent neurological changes were seen only after higher doses. The obtained results of the method are comparable with those of the authors using invasive methods of fixation of stereotactic frames.

Differences between clinical trial efficacy and real-world effectiveness.

Aggressive lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) with statin therapy can reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD) in primary and secondary prevention settings. Indeed, suboptimal statin treatment has been associated with an increased risk of CHD events. Surveys such as the Lipid Treatment Assessment Project (L-TAP) and National Cholesterol Education Program Evaluation Project Utilizing Novel E-Technology (NEPTUNE) II have demonstrated that patients in real-world clinical settings often fail to reach the target goals set forth by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). This failure to reach target LDL-C levels in real-world clinical practice presents a therapeutic treatment gap. There may be multiple reasons for this discrepancy: lack of patient follow-up, absence of well-defined protocols (ie, use of low-potency statins in high-risk patients), adherence controls (eg, pill counts, refill records), cost, and lack of patient motivation are a few possibilities. Several large clinical trials since ATP III have shown that these goals are achievable through aggressive statin therapy. This review sets forth compelling data that starting patients on or switching to high-efficacy LDL-C-lowering therapy enhances achievement of NCEP ATP III guidelines outside of the controlled trial setting.

[A universal verification and protocol system for teletherapy].

To increase the quality of radiotherapy a verify and record system (VPS) was developed for teletherapy equipments, that takes control of manually adjusted irradiation parameters and of recording all relevant data of radiotherapy. The VPS can be adapted to special wishes of the user and it lends itself to application on different irradiation equipments. In the represented paper especially the extent of efficiency of the system is shown which is characterized by high operating comfort, flexible reacting to exceptional cases and by high date and operating security. The testing phase on an accelerator model has been brought to a close, actually the system is installed to an electron linear accelerator "Neptun 10p" and led to clinical trial.
