A nurse-led outpatient service for patients with DVT.

The traditional management of patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis required hospital admission for diagnostic investigation and anti-coagulation therapy. Since November 2001 all patients with suspected DVT at Tameside and Glossop Acute Services NHS Trust have been managed as outpatients via the vascular studies unit according to agreed protocols. Audit results have shown that the service has resulted in a reduction in bed occupancy for patients with a sole diagnosis of DVT, and a reduction in the cost of managing and treating patients with a suspected DVT.

Estimating Medicare payment cuts for three outpatient services.

A change in the method used to determine Medicare outpatient payment to hospitals for outpatient ambulatory surgery, radiology, and other diagnostic procedures will lower payments to most U.S. hospitals. Using the equations provided in this article, healthcare financial managers can estimate Medicare payments under both the old and the new methods and determine the percentage payment reduction resulting from the new method.

Making the most of the shift to outpatient services.

As hospitals watch an increasing percentage of their business shift to the outpatient setting, they will have to adapt their facilities and services to the new requirements of ambulatory care. Convenience and accessibility head the list of patient expectations. The following case studies show how two hospitals captured more ambulatory business in their markets--one by expanding its home health care program, the other by introducing management control systems and streamlining operations.
