[Immunological monitoring and correction of the immune disorders in allergic diseases in poultry growers].

It was established that allergic diseases of poultry farmers were characterized by the shifts in immunoregulation expressed in terms of the decrease of the number of T-lymphocyte-suppressors, precursors of effectory and immunoregulatory T-lymphocytes, reduction of functional actifity of T- and B-cells along with an increase in the content of B-lymphocytes with antibody-dependent killers' sensitization and suppression of nonspecific protective factors. The results suggested that the use of immunomodulatory drugs helped to improve clinicoimmunologic indicators.

A preliminary note on the prevalence of infectious bursal disease of poultry in Cameroon.

The occurrence of infectious bursal disease (IBD) in industrial poultry flocks in Cameroon was investigated by serological and virological techniques. Antibody to IBD virus was detected in 118 (33.9%) out of 348 serum samples collected in seven randomly selected areas. On the other hand, virological examination was performed on bursa of Fabricius samples obtained post-mortem from flocks in which there was a high mortality among young birds. This virological examination revealed the presence of IBD virus antigen. These observations confirm the occurrence of infectious bursal disease in Cameronian industrial poultry flocks.

Lymphocytes involved in cell-mediated immune responses and methods to assess cell-mediated immunity.

With increasing need for the development of vaccines against many poultry diseases, it is important to understand host immune mechanisms involved in protection against diseases. Because of increasing evidence suggesting a role of cell-mediated immunity in disease resistance against many poultry disease, investigation of immune systems involved in cell-mediated immunity is crucial for the development of immunological control strategies. Recent advances in hybridoma technology and cellular immunology have facilitated the understanding of the ontogeny, structure, and function of the avian immune system. Isolation and flow cytometric analysis of single lymphoid cells now enables researchers to dissect various components of the avian immune system and to investigate the role of subpopulations of lymphocytes in disease processes. In vitro assays are used to asses the host cellular response based upon antigen-specific lymphoproliferation, specific cellular effector function, and lymphokine secretion. These various assays can be used to quantify and qualify host immune responses and to better understand host immunity.

Bacterial respiratory disease of poultry.

Bacterial pathogens play an important role in causing respiratory disease in domestic poultry species. In many cases, the bacterial component of a respiratory disease colonizes the respiratory system only after a primary viral or environmental insult. Colonization of the airsacs of a chicken by Escherichia coli following an infectious bronchitis virus infection is an example of secondary bacterial invasion. In other cases, the bacterial component of the respiratory disease is the primary initiating cause of the disease. Examples of primary bacterial respiratory disease are infectious coryza in chickens and fowl cholera in chickens and turkeys.
