Isospora mcquistioni and Isospora bioccai (Apicomplexa, Eimeriidae): two new coccidian parasites from Carduelis sinica (Passeriformes, Fringillidae).

The following two species are described from Carduelis sinica (Greenfinch) from Italy. The oocysts of Isospora mcquistioni n. sp. were 26.0 x 22.6 (24.0-28.5 x 20.0-24.2) microns and ovoid with a smooth bilayered wall. Neither micropyle nor oocyst residuum were observed. One polar granule was found. Sporocysts were oval, 18.1 x 11.4 (16.0-19.8 x 11.0-12.0) microns, and with a symmetrical Stieda complex. The residuum was compact and spherical. Isospora bioccai n. sp. oocysts were spherical to subspherical and 24.0 x 23.6 (22.0-26.0 x 21.0-25.8) microns. The oocyst wall was smooth and bilayered. A micropyle and oocyst residuum were absent; 4 to 10 elongate polar granules were present. Sporocysts were 19.5 x 11.6 (18.0-20.0 x 10.0-12.4) microns, ellipsoidal, and with a symmetrical Stieda complex. The sporocyst residuum was diffuse and composed of a few granules.

[Trematodes of birds from lower Silesia. III. Urotocus rossitensis (Mühling, 1898)--New for Poland species of trematode parasitism in passeriform birds].

During the studies on trematode fauna of birds from Lower Silesia, the rare species--Urotocus rossitensis (Mühling, 1898)--was found. It parasitized in the bursa Fabricii of Sylvia borin, Erithacus rubecula and Turdus philomelos, and in the cloaca of Turdus merula. All these birds are new hosts for U. rossitensis which was recorded for the first time in Poland. It is worth mentioning that the localization of this trematode in the cloaca of T. merula is nontypical, since the parasite has underdeveloped suckers. Morphological and biometrical data give us new information about variability of U. rossitensis. They allow the author to support Williams' (1960) proposition to include U. fusiformis McIntosh, 1935 and U. tholonetensis Timon-David, 1955 among the synonyms of Urotocus rossitensis (Mühling, 1898).

Cryptosporidium sp. infection in the proventriculus of an Australian diamond firetail finch (Staganoplura bella: Passeriformes, Estrildidae).

An Australian diamond firetail finch died following the acute onset and development of severe diarrhea. The bird was purchased from a wholesaler and was housed in a pet store aviary with 12 other birds. Necropsy, histologic evaluation, and electron microscopic evaluation revealed organisms in the proventriculus (surface, ductal, and glandular epithelium) compatible in site of development, size, and morphology with Cryptosporidium spp. Lesions in the proventriculus were focal cuboidal metaplasia of glandular epithelial cells and deposition of amyloid in the perivascular interstitial tissues at the base of the glands. Amyloid also was present in the duodenum, liver, spleen, pancreas, and kidney. Inability to recover other organisms suggested that Cryptosporidium was the primary cause of diarrhea and death. The affected bird likely suffered dehydration as a result of acute gastrointestinal disturbance, concomitant with renal amyloidosis and urate nephrosis.

[The occurrence of salmonellae in wild birds (Passeriformes, Lariformes)].

The occurrence of salmonellae was investigated in 1011 cloacal smears of 21 species of wild birds caught at the locality of Hermanický rybník near Ostrava. Salmonella typhimurium serotype was isolated from one of the 23 laughing gulls (Larus ridibundus) which were examined; this corresponds to a 4.3% invasion frequency. The result of the examination of all other birds was negative. On the basis of the results of this study and the results published by other authors, laughing gull can be considered as a possible source of salmonellae for farm animal stocks, particularly water fowl. It is recommended that laughing gull should be taken into consideration when seeking, for diagnostic purposes, the sources of salmonellae from which water fowl are invaded.

[Hemoglobin of tree sparrows (Passer montanus, Passeriformes): Sequence of the major (Hb A) and minor (Hb D) components].

Blood of the adult Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) contains two hemoglobin components, Hb A (ca. 85%), Hb D (ca. 15%). They differ in their alpha-chains (alpha A, alpha D), the beta-chains are identical. The complete primary structures of alpha A-, alpha D- and beta-chains are presented. Comparison with the Greylag Goose (Anser anser) hemoglobin (Hb A) showed that the alpha A-chains differ by 22 amino-acid exchanges, the beta-chains by 16. Comparison with the minor component of the Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus colchicus) hemoglobin (Hb D) showed that the alpha D-chains differ by 34 amino-acid exchanges. Proline is found incorporated in an internal position of an alpha-helix (pos. 124, H7). In comparison to that of the Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) the ratio of amino-acid exchanges for beta: alpha A: alpha D chains is 1 : 7 : 4; in comparison to other birds this ratio is found to be 1 : 2 (1.4-2.2):3 (2.2-4).

[Ectoparasites on birds (Passeriformes, Charadriiformes) migrating through the Moravian gateway].

The birds migrating through the entrance to the Moravian Gate were subjected to a three-year ectoparasitological study. The studied 24 bird species had three species of louse flies (Diptera, Hippoboscidae ), 31 species of biting lice (Mallophaga), two species of fleas ( Aphaniptera ) and one species of ticks (Acarina, Ixodidae). In Czechoslovakia the biting lice Quadraceps connexus were detected for the first time to be present on phalarope ( Phalaropus lobatus ) and Menacanthus sp. were found for the first time as parasites of reed warbler ( Acrocephalus arundinaceus ). The study also included the determination of the population density of parasites in the attacked birds and the frequency of the occurrence of ectoparasites in 150 specimens of the five most widespread species of reed birds. Louse flies occurring almost in a third of the birds (32% frequency) can be considered as the most important group of summer ectoparasites of the birds living at localities overgrown with reeds . Biting lice occurred at a 6% frequency, and fleas and ticks were even less abundant.

Bone marrow chromosomes in Corvus species (Corvidae: Passeriformes: Aves).

The diploid number of 80 +/- chromosomes has been established for two species of Indian crows, viz. Corvus splendens splendens Viellot, and Corvus macrorhynchus culminatus Sykes. In addition to the usual macro- and microchromosomes, there exist certain elements in both cases, falling in between the two different size categories of chromosomes. The number of these medium-sized, and of the macrochromosomes, was found to be 6 and 14, respectively, in both species. All chromosomes included in these two categories depict the clear position of their centromeres, while in the microchromosomes the centromeric position is not distinct. The sex-chromosome mechanism which has been studied only in Corvus splendens splendens, is of the ZZ and ZW type in the male and female, respectively.

Testicular melanin pigments and the gonadal cycle in a tropical wild passerine bird, Dicrurus adsimillis (passeriformes, dicruridae).

Seasonal variation of the coloration of the testes due to the presence of melanin pigments was observed in a wild passerine bird Dicrurus adsimillis. The proportion of melanin in the testes is highest in the recrudescence period, when the lipid content is moderate and cholesterol is present in the tissue in trace amounts. In the reproductive period, when lipids are depleted, the melanin content is very low; in this stage, cholesterol is stored in the tissue in large amounts. During the post-reproductive period, melanin pigment and lipids both fall almost to zero level and only traces of cholesterol are to be found. In the recrudescence phase, the amount of all three (i.e. melanin pigment, tissue lipids and cholesterol) rapidly increases. The probable correlation between melanogenesis in testicular tissue and hormones and their lipoid precursors is discussed.

[Bird trematodes of lower Silesia. IV. Specimens from the genus Mosesia (Pleurogenidae, Trematoda)--new element of parasitic-fauna passeriform birds from lower Silesia].

Illustrated descriptions of Mosesia pavlovskii, M. sittae and M. microsoma have been presented. These species have been described for the first time in Poland, and two of them--M. sittae and M. microsoma--have not been know in Europe until now. Motacilla flava, Turdus philomelos and T. merula are new hosts of these trematodes. M. sittae has been recognized as an autochthonous species--completing its life cycle in the climatic conditions of Lower Silesia. As for the other two species, the author supposes that their invasion has been connected with the birds' migrations or wintering.

Hematozoa from passeriform birds in Louisiana.

Blood smears were examined from 935 individuals of 19 migrant and resident bird species collected in Louisiana. Of these, 320 (34.2%) harbored hematozoa. The prevalences of parasites were as follows: Haemoproteus spp. 22.8%, Trypanosoma spp. 6.9%, unidentified microfilariae 5.0%, Plasmodium spp. 3.4%, and Leucocytozoon spp. 1.3%. These data are consistent with other reports from the region. Infections were observed in 33% of the individuals in the 13 migrant species sampled and 33% of the individuals in the 6 resident species.
