Myxoid clear cell sarcoma.
Clear cell sarcoma is a rare soft-tissue tumor presenting typically in the extremities of young adults. It has been also known as malignant melanoma of the soft parts because of the presence of melanin and cytoplasmic melanosomes. However, clear cell sarcoma is, at present, usually considered as a unique lesion because the t(12;22)(q13;q12) translocation is present only in clear cell sarcoma. Myxoid malignant melanoma is now a well-recognized morphologic variant of malignant melanoma. However, a myxoid variant of clear cell sarcoma has not been well described yet. We report a case of myxoid clear cell sarcoma occurring on the heel in a 22-year-old man. The tumor was composed of nests and fascicles of oval to fusiform cells with clear to pale eosinophilic cytoplasm, often separated by fibrous septa. The tumor cells were reactive for S-100 protein, HMB-45, and MART-1. Variably sized cysts lined by one or several layers of tumor cells were observed. Alcian blue and mucicarmine stains demonstrated prominent mucin deposition in the tumor stroma and especially in the lumen of the cysts. Fluorescence in situ hybridization for the Ewing sarcoma gene showed rearrangement in nearly all of the neoplastic cells.
Polypoid sarcoma of the pulmonary trunk: analysis of the literature and report of a case with leptomeric organelles and ultrastructural features of rhabdomyosarcoma.
A case of polypoid sarcoma of the pulmonary trunk is described in an 80-year-old woman who had a 21-year history of episodic chest pain and hemoptysis. Ultrastructural examination revealed Z bands, characteristic of rhabdomyosarcoma, and leptomeric organelles. This is the 60th reported case of sarcoma of the pulmonary trunk. Symptoms in reported cases were variable, usually caused by tumor emboli to the lungs or by right ventricular outflow obstruction. Angiography was diagnostic. The tumor was characteristically polypoid, often multicentric, and by definition was fixed to the pulmonary trunk or valves. Non-differentiated sarcoma (often uniquely pleomorphic) was found in 37% of patients, leiomyosarcoma (once confirmed by electron microscopy) in 17%, myxosarcoma in 13%, elements of rhabdomyosarcoma in 8%, fibrosarcoma in 8%, elements of chondrosarcoma in 11%, and 5% were malignant mesenchymomas. The authors suggest that these tumors originate from the undifferentiated tissues of the bulbus cordis and propose the name myenchymoma for the tumor.

Mixed malignant mesenchymal tumor of the cerebellar vermis.
In an example of mixed malignant mesenchymal tumor of the cerebellar vermis, striking osteoblastic differentiation was present along with extensive intradural spinal invasion. The CNS sarcomas and their variants are discussed as well as the extraskeletal osteosarcomas. Comparison is made to the teratoid tumors and other mixed and unusual posterior fossa tumor elements, and the capability of midline posterior fossa tissues for multipotential differentiation is considered.

Some biological properties of two new avian sarcoma viruses.
The new avian retroviruses UR1 and UR2 were isolated from spontaneous tumors of chickens by cocultivation of tumor material with susceptible chicken embryo fibroblasts. In vitro, UR1 induced formation of small foci of round and fusiform cells. On the other hand, cells infected by UR2 assumed an extremely elongated morphology. In vivo, both viruses induced fibrosarcomas and myxosarcomas with short latencies. Infectivity assays with and without mitomycin C showed that both viruses were defective for replication, but transformed nonproducing cell clones were obtained only with UR1. UR1-infected transformed nonproducing clones did not release particles detectable by reverse transcriptase assays, and fusion of transformed nonproducing cells with quail cells chronically infected with Rous sarcoma virus (a Bryan strain) failed to rescue infectious virus. This suggested that UR1 does not code for functional envelope glycoproteins. In this regard, UR1 appeared to be similar to Fujinami, PRCII, and Y73 viruses. The helper viruses of partially purified stocks of UR1 and UR2 appeared to belong to subgroup A, but these helper viruses were distinguishable from each other, as shown by host range experiments and neutralization tests. Hybridization studies with DNA complementary to the src gene of Rous sarcoma virus and RNAs extracted from both UR1 and UR2 showed no homology between the genomes of the new isolates and the transforming gene of Rous sarcoma virus.

Surgical treatment of pulmonary artery primary myxosarcoma.
Case of the 47-year-old man, clinically suffering from recurrent dyspnoea, cough, syncopes, haemoptysis, unsuccessfully treated with anticoagulant and fibrinolytic agents, is described. Large masses of a tumour, occupying nearly the whole lumen of pulmonary artery and extending to peripheral branches, were removed during surgery. The tumour was histologically and immunohistochemically classified as myxosarcoma. Following surgery, the patient was asymptomatic, could do his original job (lorry-driver) for the next 14 months. He died 20 months after surgery, showing symptoms and signs of progressive right heart failure. At autopsy, the tumourous obliteration of the pulmonary artery and adjacent thrombosis were found. Primary pulmonary artery sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent pulmonary thromboembolism, especially when no peripheral vein thrombosis could be found.
