Test of CPT and Lorentz invariance from muonium spectroscopy.

Following a suggestion from Kostelecký et al., we evaluated a test of CPT and Lorentz invariance from the microwave spectroscopy of muonium. Hamiltonian terms beyond the standard model violating CPT and Lorentz invariance would contribute frequency shifts deltanu(12) and deltanu(34) to nu(12) and nu(34), the two transitions involving muon spin flip, which were precisely measured in ground state muonium in a strong magnetic field of 1.7 T. The shifts would be indicated by anticorrelated oscillations in nu(12) and nu(34) at the Earth's sidereal frequency. No time dependence was found in nu(12) or nu(34) at the level of 20 Hz, limiting the size of some CPT and Lorentz-violating parameters at the level of 2x10(-23) GeV.

New limit on signals of Lorentz violation in electrodynamics.

We describe the results of an experiment to test for spacetime anisotropy terms that might exist from Lorentz violations. The apparatus consists of a pair of cylindrical superconducting cavity-stabilized oscillators operating in the TM010 mode with one axis east-west and the other vertical. Spatial anisotropy is detected by monitoring the beat frequency at the sidereal rate and its first harmonic. We see no anisotropy to a part in 10(13). This puts a comparable bound on four linear combinations of parameters in the general standard model extension, and a weaker bound of < 4 x 10(-9) on three others.

New experimental limit on the photon rest mass with a rotating torsion balance.

A rotating torsion balance method is used to detect the product of the photon mass squared and the ambient cosmic vector potential A(e). The signal is modulated by rotating the torsion balance to ensure the effectiveness of detection for all possible orientations of the vector potential. The influences of sidereal disturbances of environment are also removed by virtue of this modulation method. The experimental result shows micro (2)(gamma)A(e)<1.1 x 10(-11) T m/m(2), with micro (-1)(gamma) as the characteristic length associated with photon mass. If the ambient cosmic vector potential A(e) is 10(12) T m due to cluster level fields, we obtain a new upper limit on photon mass of 1.2 x 10(-51) g.

Test of cosmic spatial isotropy for polarized electrons using a rotatable torsion balance.

To test the cosmic spatial isotropy, we use a rotatable torsion balance carrying a transversely spin-polarized ferrimagnetic Dy6Fe23 mass. With a rotation period of 1 h, the period of anisotropy signal is reduced from one sidereal day by about 24 times, and hence the 1/f noise is reduced. Our present experimental results constrain the cosmic anisotropy Hamiltonian H=C(1)sigma(1)+C2sigma(2)+C3sigma(3) (sigma(3) is in the axis of earth rotation) to (C(2)(1)+C(2)(2))(1/2)=(1.1+/-2.0)x10(-20) eV and /C(3)/=(1.1+/-6.0)x10(-19) eV. This improves the previous limits on (C(2)(1)+C(2)(2))(1/2) by 27 times.

Bound on Lorentz and CPT violating boost effects for the neutron.

A search for an annual variation of a daily sidereal modulation of the frequency difference between colocated 129Xe and 3He Zeeman masers sets a stringent limit on boost-dependent Lorentz and CPT violation involving the neutron, consistent with no effect at the level of 150 nHz. In the framework of the general standard-model extension, the present result provides the first clean test for the fermion sector of the symmetry of spacetime under boost transformations at a level of 10(-27) GeV.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties of hypolaetin-8-glucoside, a novel plant flavonoid.

The anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-ulcer activities of a novel flavonoid, hypolaetin-8-glucoside, obtained from Sideritis mugronensis, have been tested in the rat. The flavonoid was more potent than phenylbutazone in suppressing the acute phase of adjuvant-carrageenan-induced inflammation, but had less effect in the prolonged inflammatory phase. However, unlike phenylbutazone, it did not cause gastric erosions. Both compounds were equiactive in inhibiting the development of carrageenan-induced abscesses, whereas phenylbutazone had greater analgesic activity in tests on pressure pain threshold. The flavonoid and cimetidine both prevented the formation of cold-restraint induced gastric lesions, but cimetidine was more potent. These results show that hypolaetin-8-glucoside combines both anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties and suggest that it may offer useful alternatives to anti-inflammatory drugs of the aspirin type.

Anisotropy and corotation of galactic cosmic rays.

The intensity of Galactic cosmic rays is nearly isotropic because of the influence of magnetic fields in the Milky Way. Here, we present two-dimensional high-precision anisotropy measurement for energies from a few to several hundred teraelectronvolts (TeV), using the large data sample of the Tibet Air Shower Arrays. Besides revealing finer details of the known anisotropies, a new component of Galactic cosmic ray anisotropy in sidereal time is uncovered around the Cygnus region direction. For cosmic-ray energies up to a few hundred TeV, all components of anisotropies fade away, showing a corotation of Galactic cosmic rays with the local Galactic magnetic environment. These results have broad implications for a comprehensive understanding of cosmic rays, supernovae, magnetic fields, and heliospheric and Galactic dynamic environments.

Why you don't owe it to yourself to seek health.

Sider and Clements provide a critical response to my view that there is no independent obligation to seek one's own health. They then argue that such an obligation exists. They are incorrect in their characterisation of my view; their critical discussion of the view they erroneously attribute to me is unconvincing; the positive argument they offer for their own view is unsatisfactory; they misjudge the significance of what is at issue; and they conclude by affirming a position that lacks a due regard for the rights of patients.

Invisible wombs: rethinking Paracelsus's concept of body and matter.

Paracelsus's matter theory remains a puzzling subject, especially insofar as his division of matter and the human being is concerned. Paracelsus's early matter theory, as presented in perhaps his most significant chemical work, the Archidoxis, was influenced by John of Rupescissa and contained elements that the mature Paracelsus--greatly influenced by theological concerns and his own unique biblical exegesis--would abandon due to their nonconformity with scripture. The article stresses Paracelsus's interpretation of Genesis 2:7, and the author argues that the Paracelsus of the Astronomia Magna (1537-38)--somewhat echoing the theories in his so-called "meterological writings"--held that the cosmos and microcosm (man) consist of soul, sidereal body (also mortal spirit), elemental mortal matter (a combination of seeds and the tria prima of salt, sulfur, and mercury as produced in the four elemental mothers of air, earth, fire, and water), and eternal body (e.g. the resurrection body). The focus in this article is on mortal matter; Paracelsus's natural philosophy and theology become much more accessible when one understands this quadripartite division.

Political-economic construction of gay male clone identity.

Social Construction is an ill-defined approach, lacking in specificity and poorly suited for solving problems of the real world. A concrete analysis of negative aspects of the Gay Clone Lifestyle, with a particular focus upon the premier gay clone drug, "poppers" (or nitrite inhalants), is contrasted to the desultory verbalizing characteristic of most social constructionist writing. The central point: Many features of the gay clone lifestyle were not created by or in the interests of gay men at all, but instead were economically constructed. The gay subculture largely evolved according to the profit-logic of an expanding sex industry. Over a dozen years ago, the sidewalks of my neighborhood, New York City's Lower East Side, were spray painted with the slogan, "CLONES GO HOME!" This was not an act of antigay bigotry. Gay men themselves had done the spray painting. Living in the Lower East Side-New York's traditional "melting pot"-these men had a way of life they wished to preserve from the encroachment of the "Gay Clone" lifestyle. Gay Lower East Siders considered themselves part of a diverse and vital community. They looked upon the newly emerging Gay Clone lifestyle as the product of a ghettoized mentality, an embodiment of commercialism, conformism, and vacuity. Living in a tough neighborhood, they were not impressed by leather queens with expensive wardrobes, nor by ersatz cowboys, nor by make-believe lumberjacks. They despised disco as an uninteresting species of submusic, referring to it as "Mafia Muzak." Nevertheless, the clone lifestyle came to prevail all over the world, so that an entire generation of gay men defined their own identities in terms of adherence to clonism: little mustaches; very short haircuts; plaid flannel shirts, boots, denim or leather jackets; a particular repertoire of movements, sounds, facial expressions, drug taking, and sexual practices. By the mid-70s there was a phrase in Frankfurt, "ein falscher Amerikaner" ("a fake American"), to describe a German gay man who had adopted the lifestyle of the American clone. At present, the clone lifestyle seems to be on the way out, though no doubt there are those who will carry it with them, as their identity, to the very end. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of social construction theory for understanding the clone episode in gay male history. I am particularly interested in the issues of continuity and specificity.

Application of oral implants to the general dental practice.

BACKGROUND: The use of dental implants has become a management strategy for replacing missing teeth. As new implant surface technologies develop and prosthetic options increase, the field of dental implantology continues to change. General dentists con sidering the use of this treatment modality in their practices should understand the vital role treatment planning plays in achieving predictable outcomes. OVERVIEW: This article reviews specific issues the general dentist typically faces when considering patients for single-tooth, partially-edentulous-arch and full-arch tooth replacement using dental implants. The author analyzes patient-based assessments, as well as diagnostic criteria and steps, to help practitioners predict patient-specific issues that may signal complications. He also discusses approaches for resolving complications. The article emphasizes the importance of careful evaluation in predicting patient-specific issues that can lead to gingival recession and suggests approaches to manage these situations. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Dental implants have become an increasingly common treatment option for missing dentition. Because innovations in implant surfaces continue to promote faster bone growth with better predictability, general dentists should be aware of the importance of treatment planning, assessment and teamwork in achieving successful outcomes.

Andalusol, a diterpenoid with anti-inflammatory activity from Siderits foetens Clemen.

The anti-inflammatory activity of andalusol (ent-13(16),14-labdadiene-6 alpha,8 alpha,18-triol), a diterpenoid obtained from the acetone extract of Sideritis foetens Clemen, has been investigated. This compound was able to inhibit acute inflammatory processes induced by carrageenan or 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA) after oral or topical administration. Quantitation of the neutrophil specific marker, myeloperoxidase (MPO), demonstrated that its topical anti-inflammatory effect was associated with reduction in neutrophil infiltration into inflamed tissues. Interaction of andalusol with leukocyte functions and histamine release from mast cells was analyzed in vitro. At a concentration of 100 microM andalusol decreased beta-glucuronidase release from calcium ionophore A23187-stimulated rat peritoneal leukocytes. However, it failed to affect superoxide generation on TPA-stimulated leukocytes and it was non toxic to leukocytes up to 100 microM (assayed in terms of lactate dehydrogenase release). Andalusol produced a dose-dependent inhibition on histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells stimulated by compound 48/80 or calcium ionophore A23187. These results suggest that andalusol possesses an anti-inflammatory profile, and it is in part responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity attributed to this plant.

Building corporate character. Interview by Nan Stone.

Stride Rite is a good company by any definition: Keds, Sperry Top-Siders, and Stride Rite children's shoes are consumer favorites for their fit, quality, and comfort. Wall Street analysts praise the company's outstanding financial performance. Innovative programs such as the first corporate child-care center and public service scholarships support Stride Rite's reputation as one of the most responsible employers and corporate citizens in the United States. Behind Stride Rite's good performance are the building blocks of corporate character: a legacy of quality and service and a leader committed to keeping that legacy lively. When Stride Rite shipped its first children's shoes in 1919, they came with the company's commitment "to produce an honest quality product in an honest way and deliver it as promised." For Arnold Hiatt, that commitment has been the driving force behind the company's evolution from manufacturing into marketing and product development as well as the guiding principle in its relations with consumers, dealers, suppliers, and employees. But Stride Rite's corporate character is also a reflection of Hiatt himself. In his early 20s, Hiatt fled a management training program "designed to make carnivores" out of its new employees and bought Blue Star Shoes, a small manufacturing company that had gone into Chapter 11. Through experience and "stumbling around," he built Blue Star's sales to $5 million-and got a practical education in management, markets, and human nature that has proved equally useful in running Stride Rite.

[Three cases of semi-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis occurring in healthy or diabetic individuals].

We encountered three cases of suspected semi-invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, occurring in healthy or diabetic patients. Radiographic findings disclosed cavity formation in 2 of the patients, but only nodular lesions in 1. The beta-D glucan level was elevated in 1 patient, but was within the normal range in the other 2. Morphological findings indicated that all 3 patients had pulmonary aspergillosis. Following the oral administration of FLCZ to 1 patient and ITCZ to the other 2 for about 2 months, the radiographic lesions resolved and hematologic inflammatory reactions cleared up. Gefter et al and Sider et al have defined 2 types of aspergillosis that occur in mildly immuno-compromised or healthy individuals: the semi-invasive type, which destroys pulmonary tissue without vascular invasion and leads to cavity formation; and the locally invasive type, which is characterized by nodular or massive radiographic lesions without cavity formation. Semi-invasive aspergillosis was diagnosed in all 3 of the cases we reported.

The Ladies Committee of the Women's Hospital, Castlegate, Nottingham, 1880-1900.

This study co*siders the management of a small provincial and specialist hospital, the Women's Hospital, Castlegate, Nottingham, during the closing two decades of the 19th century. The unusual administration of such an institution by the Ladies committee is examined and the resulting conflict between female authority and the male medical hegemony is described. It is contended that the growing confidence of these women throughout these years in administration and organisation culminated in their renewed constitutional demand for suffrage in 1909.

[Ischemic cardiomyopathy: remodeling, hypertrophy, subendocardial risk. Can processes be controlled?].

Ischaemic cardiomyopathy reflects the myocardial dysfunction caused by coronary disease. It results from the association of 1. segmental infarction(s) responsible for ventricular "remodelling", i.e. expansion of the necrotic area(s) and hypertrophy-dilatation of the rest of the ventricle, eventually concurring to heart failure; 2. areas which are viable but with a function that is reversibly compromised by severe acute or chronic ischaemia (myocardial sideration or hibernation) affecting mainly the subendocardium. The spontaneous course of cardiomyopathy towards the worst can be arrested by 1. revascularisation of the myocardium at risk by coronary reperfusion performed either as an emergency in case of infarct in the process of formation, or after detection of the viable myocardial areas by isotopic methods; 2. prevention or limitation of ventricular remodelling by coronary reperfusion and improvement of the ventricular load by administration of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and nitroglycerin. The Survival and Ventricular Enlargement study (SAVE) has been the first to demonstrate the relationship between limitation of ventricular remodelling and improvement of the secondary prognosis of infarction obtained by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

[Dependence of "macroscopic fluctuations" from cosmophysical factors. Spatial anisotropy].

It was shown in experiments with collimators that the changes with time in the shape of histograms constructed from the measurements of the alpha-activity of 239Pu microsamples depend on the direction of the flow alpha-particles. If the flow of alpha-particles was directed to the Polar Star, the dependence of the probability of the realization of histograms of similar shape on time disappeared. The measurements of alpha-particle flows directed to the East and West revealed a high probability of the repeated realization of histograms of similar shape in 1436 min, i.e., in a sederal day. A comparison of "west" and "east" histograms showed a high probability of the realization of similar "west" histograms 718 min (half a sideral day) later than "east" histograms. The results suggest that the shape of histograms depends on the pattern of the starry sky and the space-time inhomogeneity corresponding to this pattern.

[Tako-tsubo: a rare form of transient left ventricular dysfunction].

The authors report the case of a 67 year old caucasian female admitted for suspected acute coronary syndrome with ST segment elevation. Coronary angiography did not show any coronary lesion but ventriculography revealed akinesia of the middle and apical segments with hyperkinesia at the base. An isolated moderate elevation of troponine Ic was noted. On the 10th day the methergin test was negative and ventriculography showed complete recovery of the left ventricular segmental kinetics. Left ventricular transient apical ballooning, or tako-tsubo syndrome, is characterised by reversible akinesia of the middle and apical segments with no associated coronary lesion or enzymatic elevation concordant with the extent of the akinetic areas. It mainly affects women between 50 and 60 years old and follows emotional or physical stress. The prognosis is excellent in survivors with a rapid return of normal systolic function. The pathophysiology remains debatable, excluding myocarditis in favour of sideration.
