'Til death do us part: intimacy and sexuality in the marriages of Alzheimer's patients.

1. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is likely to have a significant effect on sexual behavior, but both patient and partner will still have sexual feelings and needs. 2. Research has shown that a high proportion of men with AD develop erection problems, but causes of their erection difficulties are not understood. 3. Research has shown that inappropriate sexual behavior in AD patients is uncommon, although it can be very troubling to the family and health-care provider if it occurs. 4. More professionals need to be trained to discuss sexual issues openly and sensitively with AD patients and partners and to offer useful clinical suggestions.

Long-term care. Wait 'til your dad gets home.

Patients and carers were unaware of eligibility criteria for long-term care. Many patients interviewed in a qualitative study were not aware they had been assessed for services. Delays in providing rehabilitation services and mobility restrict independence.

[Epidemiology of Tuberculosis in Children from 1968 til 1973 in Schleswig-Holstein (author's transl)].

In Schleswig-Holstein 271 children (131 boys, 140 girls) were treated for tuberculosis between january 1968 and June 1973; 84% were aged 5--14 years, 14% between 1--4 years and 29% between 0--1 year. Each year, nearly the same number of infections occurred in the various districts of the country. In 246 children a primary form of tuberculosis was diagnosed (in 11 cases with pleurisy). 11 patients tuberculous meningitis, 3 patients miliary tuberculosis and 5 patients another form of the disease, 18 of 271 patients (7%) had been vaccinated against tuberculosis as newborns; in 4 of these children tubercle bacilli could be isolated. BCG vaccination had been done 8--12 years before disease in 11 cases and 1--5 years before disease in 7 cases. None of these vaccinated children had a hematogenous tuberculosis or died. Of the non-vaccinated children two patients had meninogencephalitis and died. The other children were cured by chemotherapy, 12 children by additional surgery. The morbidity of tuberculosis in Schleswig-Holstein was 7--10 per 100000 children. Therefore, further BCG vaccination, chemoprophylaxis or preventive chemotherapy seems necessary. Early recognition of tuberculosis in old persons may be of practical value to prevent infections in children.

Cimetidine does not influence TIL in breast cancer.

Cimetidine is known to have immunomodulatory effects and this study aimed to examine the effect of pre-operative cimetidine treatment on lymphocytic infiltration in n = 72 women with breast cancer randomised to 400 mg bd or placebo for five days presurgery. A combined index was devised by adding infiltrating lymphocyte percentage and lymphoid score. There were no significant differences in circumferential infiltrate and lymphoid follicles in cimetidine treated patients and control patients with breast cancer.

[Study on the TIL and NK of IL-2 injected via pelvic retroperitoneal space in gynecological cancer patient].

OBJECTIVE: To verify the feasibility and effect of biotherapy instituted via pelvic retroperitoneal space on gynecological cancer. METHODS: Injecting IL-2 (and/or) 5-Fu through a tube installed in the pelvic retroperitoneal space. Counting the subpopulation of T cell and NK of lymph-nodes of pelvis after the drugs being by FCM. RESULTS: The numbers of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD25+ and NK cells in treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control group. And the numbers of these cells in the IL-2 + 5-Fu group were significantly higher than those in the 5-Fu group. The CD25+ and NK cell numbers in the IL-2 group were significantly higher than those in the 5-Fu group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The IL-2 injected via pelvic retroperitoneal space can promote the activity, development and infiltrating of T cell and NK cell in the tumor tissue.

Choice. Shop 'til you drop.

It is unclear whether the public will embrace choice with enough enthusiasm to drive improvement. A series of focus groups have confirmed there is general support for choice, but also concern about how patients would get information to inform their decisions. Many people would act against one of the main drivers of the policy and choose to wait.
