Migration, urbanization, resources and development.

The author adopts "Coale's scenario-building approach to focus on some of the demoeconomic consequences of rapid urbanization....[He describes] the construction and evolution of four alternative population scenarios and then [examines] the implications that these alternative trends in migration and fertility would have for Coale's three important population characteristics: the dependency burden, the growth rate of labor force 'eligibles,' and the density of the population."

Peculiarities in the formation of populated places on the seaboard of the USSR.

"A number of investigators have noted a movement of Soviet population toward the seacoasts, contrasting with the nation's traditional inland development. The pull of the coast has been linked to the increasing foreign trade of the USSR and to greater involvement in ocean affairs in general. The author analyzes the recent growth of maritime urban places in terms of the nation's major maritime regions: Azov-Black Sea, Baltic, Caspian, Pacific and Arctic, compares the rates of urban population growth and discusses some of the factors that account for differences in regional development."

[Recent changes in migration patterns in the Mexico City metropolitan zone].

"This study analyzes the magnitude, evolution over time, and place of origin of migrants to the ZMCM [Mexico City metropolitan zone] during the 1970s and 80s. More specifically, the study attempts to test the following hypothesis: attraction of migrants to the ZMCM has diminished over time;...thus the ZMCM is emerging as an important origin of migrants toward other cities. [Characteristics of intra-metropolitan mobility in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1970-1980].

"Based on the 1980 census, the study attempts to provide a general overview of [intra-metropolitan migration in Brazil], using information regarding previous place of residence--data included for the first time in a Brazilian census--, which helps to establish the internal, intermunicipal, migratory flow. The article also presents certain aspects related to volume, direction and reasons for these movements as well as some of the characteristics of influencing factors." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
