To evaluate the efficacy of mask-mode digital subtraction angiography in selective coronary arteriography, we compared computer-based digital subtraction angiograms to standard film-based angiograms in 77 patients. Digital angiography was performed utilizing a 512(2) matrix and a framing rate of 30 frames/second. Radiation parameters were selected after a pilot dose-ranging trial, and were 70-120 KVP, 10-30mA and 0.8 to 5msec pulse width. Single view digital angiograms were compared to single view conventional angiograms in 27 patient; the two angiograms agreed within one grade of severity in 84 percent of the lesions or normal arteries seen. Multiple view digital angiograms were compared to multiple view conventional angiograms in 50 patients. Agreement within one grade of severity was found for 90 percent of lesions or normal arteries. Digital angiography detected 95 percent of collateral vessels seen on conventional angiography. We conclude that computer-based mask-mode digital subtraction angiography can be utilized in selective coronary angiography to obtain results comparable to those using conventional film-based cineangiography.

Serum samples from 1185 individuals (blood donors, health care workers, patients on haemodialysis or from other high risk groups or with non-A, non-B [NANB] hepatitis and other liver diseases) were examined for antibody to a recombinant antigen of hepatitis c virus (anti-HCV). A new ABBOTT HCV EIA system was used and a parallel study with ORTHO HCV ELISA was also done for 380 samples to compare the two anti-HCV tests. A confirmatory neutralizing ABBOTT ELISA probe was also performed in 45 cases. Anti-HCV seropositivity was found in 1.60% of accepted healthy blood donors, while among subjects excluded from donation for elevated aminotransferase the rate was 8.95%. In patients on haemodialysis 47.15% anti-HCV prevalence was found, in other high risk group subjects 32.5%. Patients with acute post-transfusion (PT) NANB hepatitis showed 40% prevalence, this rate in chronic PT-NANB was 77.8%. The two ELISA tests revealed 95% agreement in the parallel determinations. Serial dilution studies of anti-HCV positive sera showed that ABBOTT test was of superior sensitivity. The results of the confirmatory test suggest that reactive (positive) samples of low optical density near to the cut-off value require a confirmation with the neutralization test. In conclusion HCV infection in Hungary seems to be a common aetiologic factor in PT-NANB hepatitis and the screening of blood donors for anti-HCV may be useful. However, because of financial difficulties, cost/benefit calculations are recommended before the introduction of this preventive measure.

Modern anomaloscopes with four independent light channels (i.e., the Besançon Anomalometer which was presented in 1980 at the DOG) allow accurate examinations of color vision. In our routine clinical examination, we use two metameric equations: the red-green Rayleigh equation and the blue-green Moreland equation. This two-equation method permits the diagnosis of congenital and acquired color vision defects in a precise quantitative way. In both equations the goal of the examination is to measure the absolute matching range. The diagnosis is abnormal color vision if the absolute matching range is shifted and/or enlarged in one or both of the two metameric equations. A computer-controlled clinical examination of color vision, which will make the procedure simpler and shorter for the patient, is presently being developed.

A comparative study of three Dinamap 845 instruments was carried out in order to find out whether the use of several automated blood pressure recorders constitutes a major source of variations in epidemiological studies. The three instruments were compared by means of a variant analysis model and proved to have virtually the same accuracy. Only one of them gave a slightly different diastolic pressure reading. No matter how useful are instruments for automated blood pressure measurement, comparisons between several recorders of the same type and regular testing for accuracy seem to be necessary in epidemiological studies.
