Driving Bose-Einstein-condensate vorticity with a rotating normal cloud.

We have developed an evaporative cooling technique that accelerates the rotation of an ultracold 87Rb gas, confined in a static harmonic potential. As a normal gas is evaporatively spun up and cooled below quantum degeneracy, it is found to nucleate vorticity in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Measurements of the condensate's aspect ratio and surface-wave excitations are consistent with effective rigid-body rotation. Rotation rates of up to 94% of the centrifugal limit are inferred. A threshold in the normal cloud's rotation is observed for the intrinsic nucleation of the first vortex. The threshold value lies below the prediction for a nucleation mechanism involving the excitation of surface waves of the condensate.

Restrictions on the coherence of the ultrafast optical emission from an electron-hole-pair condensate.

We report on the transfer of coherence from a quantum-well electron-hole condensate to the light it emits. As a function of density, the coherence of the electron-hole-pair system evolves from being full for the low-density Bose-Einstein condensate to a chaotic behavior for a high-density BCS-like state. This degree of coherence is transferred to the light emitted in a damped oscillatory way in the ultrafast regime. Additionally, the photon field exhibits squeezing properties during the transfer time. Our results suggest a new type of ultrafast experiments for detecting electron-hole-pair condensation.

Dynamical instability of a condensate induced by a rotating thermal gas.

We study surface modes of the condensate in the presence of a rotating thermal cloud in an axisymmetric trap. By considering collisions that transfer atoms between the condensate and the noncondensate, we find that m>0 modes, which rotate in the same sense as the thermal cloud, damp less strongly than m<0 modes, where m is the polarity of the excitation. We show that above a critical angular rotation frequency, equivalent to the Landau stability criterion, m>0 modes become dynamically unstable, leading to the possibility of vortex nucleation. We also generalize our stability analysis to treat the case where the stationary state of the condensate already possesses a single vortex.

Quantum instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction.

We study the quantum and the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate gas confined in a toroidal trap. According to GP, if the interatomic interaction is attractive, the rotational states of the system can be dynamically stable or unstable depending on the strength of the mean-field energy. The full quantum analysis, however, reveals that the condensate is always unstable. Quantum fluctuations are particularly important close to the GP stability borderline, even for systems with a relatively large number of condensate atoms.

Superfluid bose liquid with a suppressed BEC and an intensive pair coherent condensate as a model of 4He.

One introduces a model of the superfluid state of a Bose liquid with repulsion between bosons, in which at T=0, along with a weak single-particle Bose-Einstein condensate, there exists an intensive pair coherent condensate, analogous to the Cooper condensate in a Fermi liquid with attraction between fermions. A closed system of nonlinear integral equations for the normal and anomalous self-energy parts is solved numerically, and a quasiparticle spectrum is obtained, which is in good agreement with the experimental spectrum of elementary excitations in superfluid 4He. It is shown that the roton minimum in the spectrum is associated with the negative minimum of the Fourier component of the pair interaction potential.

Interferometry below the standard quantum limit with Bose-Einstein condensates.

We discuss a scheme for using entangled Bose-Einstein condensates to detect phase differences with a resolution better than the standard quantum limit. To date, schemes have shown that the enhancement in phase resolution gained by entangling condensates is lost when dissipation is present. Here we show how this can be overcome by using number correlated condensates, as have been produced recently in the laboratory. We also outline a scheme for measuring this phase that is not destroyed when the effects of finite detector efficiency are considered.

Accidental suppression of landau damping of the transverse breathing mode in elongated bose-einstein condensates.

We study transverse radial oscillations of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate using finite-temperature simulations, in the context of a recent experiment at ENS [F. Chevy, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 250402 (2002)]]. The mode observed experimentally corresponds to an in-phase collective oscillation of both the condensate and the thermal cloud. Our simulations are in excellent agreement with experiment, accounting for the very small damping rates observed. In contrast to other condensate modes, interatomic collisions are found to be the dominant damping mechanism in this case.

Imprinting vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate using topological phases.

Vortices were imprinted in a Bose-Einstein condensate using topological phases. Sodium condensates held in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap were transformed from a nonrotating state to one with quantized circulation by adiabatically inverting the magnetic bias field along the trap axis. Using surface wave spectroscopy, the axial angular momentum per particle of the vortex states was found to be consistent with 2 variant Planck's over 2pi or 4 variant Planck's over 2pi, depending on the hyperfine state of the condensate.

Dynamics of a single vortex line in a Bose-Einstein condensate.

We study experimentally the line of a single quantized vortex in a rotating prolate Bose-Einstein condensate confined by a harmonic potential. In agreement with predictions, we find that the vortex line is in most cases curved at the ends. We monitor the vortex line leaving the condensate. Its length is measured as a function of time and temperature. For a low temperature, the survival time can be as large as 10 sec. The length of the line and its deviation from the center of the trap are related to the angular momentum per particle along the condensate axis.

Coreless vortex formation in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate.

Coreless vortices were phase imprinted in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The three-component order parameter of F=1 sodium condensates held in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap was manipulated by adiabatically reducing the magnetic bias field along the trap axis to zero. This distributed the condensate population across its three spin states and created a spin texture. Each spin state acquired a different phase winding which caused the spin components to separate radially.

Observation of long-lived vortex aggregates in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates.

We study the formation of large vortex aggregates in a rapidly rotating dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate. When we remove atoms from the rotating condensate with a tightly focused, resonant laser, the density can be locally suppressed, while fast circulation of a ring-shaped superflow around the area of suppressed density is maintained. Thus a giant vortex core comprising 7 to 60 phase singularities is formed. The giant core is only metastable, and it will refill with distinguishable single vortices after many rotation cycles. The surprisingly long lifetime of the core can be attributed to the influence of strong Coriolis forces in the condensate. In addition we have been able to follow the precession of off-center giant vortices for more than 20 cycles.

Vortex phase diagram of F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.

We have calculated the F=1 ground state of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate trapped harmonic potential with an applied Ioffe-Pitchard magnetic field. The vortex phase diagram is found in the plane spanned by perpendicular and longitudinal magnetic fields. The ferromagnetic condensate has two vortex phases which differ by winding number in the spinor components. The two vortices for the F(z)=-1 antiferromagnetic condensate are separated in space. Moreover, we considered an average local spin | >| to testify to what extent it is parallel to magnetic field (the nonadiabatic effects). We have shown that the effects are important at vortex cores.

Roton-maxon spectrum and stability of trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.

We find that pancake dipolar condensates can exhibit a roton-maxon character of the excitation spectrum, so far observed only in superfluid helium. We also obtain a condition for the dynamical stability of these condensates. The spectrum and the border of instability are tunable by varying the particle density and/or the confining potential. This opens wide possibilities for manipulating the superfluid properties of dipolar condensates.

Measurement of the spatial correlation function of phase fluctuating Bose-Einstein condensates.

We measure the intensity correlation function of two interfering spatially displaced copies of phase fluctuating Bose-Einstein condensates. It is shown that this corresponds to a measurement of the phase correlation properties of the initial condensate. Analogous to the method used in the stellar interferometer experiment of Hanbury Brown and Twiss, we use spatial intensity correlations to determine the phase coherence lengths of elongated condensates. We find good agreement with our prediction of the correlation function and confirm the expected coherence length.

Nonlinear dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a magnetic waveguide.

We have studied the internal and external dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an anharmonic magnetic waveguide. An oscillating condensate experiences a strong coupling between the center of mass motion and the internal collective modes. Because of the anharmonicity of the magnetic potential, not only the center of mass motion shows harmonic frequency generation, but also the internal dynamics exhibit nonlinear frequency mixing. Thereby, the condensate shows shape oscillations with an extremely large change in the aspect ratio of up to a factor of 10. We describe the data with a theoretical model to high accuracy. For strong excitations we test the experimental data for indications of a chaotic behavior.

Spin-singlet Bose-Einstein condensation of two-electron atoms.

We report the observation of a Bose-Einstein condensation of ytterbium atoms by evaporative cooling in a novel crossed optical trap. Unlike the previously observed condensates, a ytterbium condensate is a two-electron system in a singlet state and has distinct features such as the extremely narrow intercombination transitions which are ideal for future optical frequency standard and the insensitivity to external magnetic field which is important for precision coherent atom optics, and the existence of the novel metastable triplet states generated by optical excitation from the singlet state.

Optically induced lensing effect on a Bose-Einstein condensate expanding in a moving lattice.

We report the experimental observation of a lensing effect on a Bose-Einstein condensate expanding in a moving 1D optical lattice. The effect of the periodic potential can be described by an effective mass dependent on the condensate quasimomentum. By changing the velocity of the atoms in the frame of the optical lattice, we induce a focusing of the condensate along the lattice direction. The experimental results are compared with the numerical predictions of an effective 1D theoretical model. In addition, a precise band spectroscopy of the system is carried out by looking at the real-space propagation of the atomic wave packet in the optical lattice.

Observation of resonance condensation of fermionic atom pairs.

We have observed condensation of fermionic atom pairs in the BCS-BEC crossover regime. A trapped gas of fermionic 40K atoms is evaporatively cooled to quantum degeneracy and then a magnetic-field Feshbach resonance is used to control the atom-atom interactions. The location of this resonance is precisely determined from low-density measurements of molecule dissociation. In order to search for condensation on either side of the resonance, we introduce a technique that pairwise projects fermionic atoms onto molecules; this enables us to measure the momentum distribution of fermionic atom pairs. The transition to condensation of fermionic atom pairs is mapped out as a function of the initial atom gas temperature T compared to the Fermi temperature T(F) for magnetic-field detunings on both the BCS and BEC sides of the resonance.
