[Spectral characteristics of solar radiation in broadleaved Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountain].

Based on the measurement above and below forest canopy and meteorological data, the spectral characteristics of solar radiation in broadleaved Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountain was analyzed. The results show that the photosynthetically active radiation(PAP) coefficients of total radiation, direct radiation and scatter radiation changed daily and yearly, with an annual averages of 0.46, 0.43 and 0.56 respectively. The average reflectivity, transmissitvity and absorptivity of single leaves of different tree species in Korean pine forest were 27.0%, 23.4%, 49.6% respectively. Single leaves nearly absorbed all of the ultraviolet radiation(UV) and 71.8% of photosynthetically active radiation, but transmitted 9.6% and reflected 18.6%. As for near-infrared radiation (NIR), the reflectivity and transmissitivity of leaves were a little less than the absorptivity. The forest canopy absorbed 93.9% PAR and 94.1% UV, but reflected and transmitted less. It absorbed 59.2%, reflected 26.3% and transmitted 14.4% NIR.

Chronomics.

Several international meetings have revealed an accumulating body of reference values for well-established about-daily and about-yearly rhythms of photic origin and evidence also for about-7-day, -27-day, -half-yearly, -10.5- and -21-yearly, and even -50-yearly rhythmicities in us as well as around us, as invisible non-photic heliogeophysical signatures possibly built into individuals and/or populations, complementing the biological year and day. In time series (biological or other) that are dense and sufficiently long, the characteristics of rhythms, chaos (deterministic and other) and trends can all be quantified as elements of structures called chronomes. Chronobiological methodology assesses uncertainties in comparisons of endpoints in all elements of chronomes, before and after: 1) changes in lifestyle, such as meal quality, quantity, timing and salting of the food; 2) preventive non-drug interventions to limit the risk of vascular disease; or 3) drug treatments for high-risk subjects as well as for those with actual vascular disease, all on a practicable, individualized and also a general population basis. A collateral hierarchy characterizes molecular to psychosocial aspects of living beings that are exposed to their socio-ecological environs and thus are synchronizable and/or otherwise manipulable by society, meals, lighting, heating, and non-photic, non-thermic environmental variations that become predictable to the extent that they appear to constitute cycles, yet adhere only to a statistical, rather than a deterministic causality. With this qualification, chronome mapping with outcomes could eventually serve an individualized optimization of lifestyle, for chronoprevention and chronotherapy as well as for inquiries into the evolution and future of life, a budding chronoastrobiology, in keeping with the original title of the conference.

Intake of alcohol and alcoholic beverages and the risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin.

We prospectively examined the intake of alcoholic beverages in relation to the risk of basal cell carcinoma BCC in two large cohorts of men and women. Alcohol intake was assessed with food frequency questionnaires every 2-4 years, and BCC was ascertained by self-report. We used a pooled logistic regression to model the association between alcohol intake and BCC adjusting for various health, sun exposure, and sun-sensitivity factors. During 8 years of follow-up in women (1986-1994) we recorded 3060 cases of BCC, and during 10 years (1986-1996), we recorded 3028 cases in men. Significant positive associations were observed between total alcohol intake (P for trend <0.0001), alcohol from liquor (P for trend = 0.003), and white wine (P for trend = 0.01) intake and risk of BCC. Compared with those who abstained, those who drank 0.1-4.9 g, 5.0-14.9 g, 15.0-14.9 g, and 30 g or more alcohol a day had multivariate relative risks of 1.11 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03, 1.19], 1.26 (95% CI, 1.12, 1.41), 1.29 (95% CI, 1.18, 1.42), and 1.12 (95% CI, 1.01, 1.26), respectively. Alcohol from beer had no association with BCC in either cohort, and red wine appeared to have an inverse association in women (P for trend = 0.004) but not in men. These associations remained unchanged after adjustment for individual vitamins, multivitamin use, outdoor walking, and exclusion of follow-up time after last physical examination among those who never had BCC. Alcohol intake was associated with BCC, but the association appeared to be different for each type of alcoholic beverage. Other studies are needed to confirm these results.

Eclipse retinopathy: follow up of 36 cases after April 1995 solar eclipse in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: A study was carried out at the Department of Ophthalmology Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad from April 1995 to April 2002 to study the visual acuity changes in patients of solar eclipse retinopathy. METHODS: Thirty-six patients with solar eclipse retinopathy were seen. Examination included assessment of Visual Acuity (VA), Slit Lamp examination, Fundoscopy, Fundus Photography and Fundus Fluorescein Angiography where the VA was 6/60. The patients were seen at weekly intervals then at monthly interval and later annually. RESULTS: Poor visual acuity was seen in all patients, after images in 28 patients, Erythopsia in 25 patients and Central Scotoma in 23 patients. Eye involvement was unilateral in 27 cases and bilateral in 9 cases. Twenty-nine patients were male and 7 patients were female. The commonest age group was between 10-30 years. CONCLUSIONS: Complete recovery was seen in 26 patients, 7 made partial recovery while in three patients the visual acuity remained poor. Maximum recovery occurred between two weeks to six months. After six months, no changes in the visual acuity or macular lesion were noticed.

[Preparation of biologically transformed raw material from woolly foxglove Digitalis lanata Ehrh and isolation of digoxin from it].

A biotechnological approach is proposed for conservation of a terraneous part of woolly foxglove under anaerobic conditions with a subsequent air-sun drying of the biologically transformed raw material. During the conservation primary foxglove glycosides completely convert to secondary ones which do not transform further. A simple method is described for preparation from the transformed raw material of an enriched glycoside fraction with the yield of 3.6% and for isolation from this fraction of highly purified digoxin with the yield of 0.06% of the starting raw material, and the other secondary glycosides can be also isolated.

Antischistosomal effects of praziquantel, its alkaline hydrolysis and sun decomposed products on experimentally S. mansoni infected albino mice. (A) Efficacy assessment based on clinicopathological findings.

The antischistosomal activity of praziquantel (PZQ), its alkaline hydrolysis product (HP) and its sun-decomposed (SD) products was investigated in S. mansoni experimentally infected mice. The evaluation was made depending on the degree of clinico-pathological changes. The results obtained revealed that, PZQ, HP and the SD have induced partial suppression of worm fecundity as judged by the significant reduction in eggs per gram of faeces in comparison with the infected untreated control. The effect on tissue egg deposition in the treated groups was comparable to the infection of untrea ted control. Worm recovery showed large reduction in the number of worms for SD (47.6%) and HP (28.6%) compared to PZQ (16.6%) treated groups. So, the former two compounds have the superior antischistosomal activities. Glutamate pyruvate transominase (GPT) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) concentrations were measured. The GOT values for all treated groups were significantly higher than those for the healthy control group (p=0.01). The SD group enzyme concentration was even higher than the infected untreated control. The GPT values of all groups were greater than the uninfected control and the difference was significant for the infected untreated, PZQ and the SD treated groups (p=0.05).

Malignant melanoma of the skin - not a sunshine story!

BACKGROUND: In an earlier study on malignant melanoma incidence in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the USA, we found a strong association between the introduction of FM radio broadcasting at full-body resonant frequencies and increasing melanoma incidence. The purpose of the current study was to review mortality and incidence data for malignant melanoma of the skin in Sweden and its temporal relation to increased "sun-traveling", and to the introduction of FM and TV broadcasting net-works. MATERIAL/METHODS: Official, published information was collected and displayed graphically. These data included incidence rates of malignant melanoma, death numbers, charter travel statistics, and data on the expansion of the FM broadcasting network in all counties of Sweden. RESULTS: A good correlation in time was found for the rollout of FM/TV broadcasting networks while the increased amount of "sun travel" by air (charter) did not start until 7 years after the melanoma trend break in 1955. Counties that did not roll out their FM-broadcasting network until several years after 1955 continued to have a stable melanoma mortality during the intervening years. CONCLUSIONS: The increased incidence and mortality of melanoma of skin cannot solely be explained by increased exposure to UV-radiation from the sun. We conclude that continuous disturbance of cell repair mechanisms by body-resonant electromagnetic fields seems to amplify the carcinogenic effects resulting from cell damage caused e.g. by UV-radiation.

A human galaxy: a prehistory of the future.

In the very long term, how could humans colonise the Galaxy? Colonisation cannot be centrally controlled; deeper drives must be tapped. It may take centuries to colonise the nearest stars: it may be a 'programme' like the Industrial Revolution, fuelled by entrepreneurship. To build a respectable interstellar empire may take millennia. Religions are similar multigenerational projects. Perhaps colonists will be motivated by appropriate creeds. To win the Galaxy, starship technology must persist for tens or hundreds of millennia. Homo erectus made the same hand-axe for a million years. The driver was biological, not conscious. Perhaps to our descendants starships will be like peacock tails.

[Optical coherence tomography in solar eclipse retinopathy].

CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a patient suffering from acute visual loss soon after watching a solar eclipse. Optical coherence tomography was the main diagnostic tool used. DISCUSSION: Solar retinopathy is now an unusual cause of visual loss, although there are still some cases diagnosed, especially after viewing solar eclipses. Optical coherence tomography is suitable for detecting permanent retinal injuries related to solar exposure, with the outer retinal layers being typically affected.

Seasonal variation in the orientation of homing pigeons: new evidence for a latency in the sun compass.

Homing pigeons must keep track of the seasonal variations in the sun's daily motion to use the sun as a reference. A delay of seven weeks in such updating of their ephemerides was previously interpreted as being the cause of the behavior of control pigeons studied near the equator in September, when birds released in the morning flew anomalously to the right of birds released in the afternoon. Demonstration of the chronic existence of a delay was obtained by observing that the anomaly was still present but inverted in sign in March, when the pigeons released in the morning flew to the left of those released in the afternoon.

[Correlation of certain parameters of solar winds and sudden cardiovascular deaths].

In day-to-day investigations the closest correlation with sudden cardiovascular mortality is displayed by the density of solar wind. An increased mortality is recorded after its brisk rise (in particular after potent proton phenomena) and paradoxically also in case of very low density value. Minor proton phenomena and eruptions with X-ray emission did not influence the mortality in the authors' group. This type of increased solar activity thus should not influence the prognosis of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases. When mean monthly density values of solar wind are correlated with mortality, the relationship is paradoxically indirect. The rate and temperature of the solar wind does not play any part due to its phase retardation after increased density. The correlation of mean annual values of all parameters of solar wind (i.e. density, velocity and temperature) and mortality is also indirect. There is no explanation so far for the increased mortality during low density levels during the interval between two rises in the course of day-to-day monitoring. For the short-term mortality prognosis thus potent proton phenomena can be used; the effect of very low values of solar wind density will have to be confirmed. The biogenic action of solar wind is obviously more complex than was formerly assumed.

Interplanetary crew exposure estimates for the August 1972 and October 1989 solar particle events.

Using the coupled neutron-proton space radiation transport computer code (BRYNTRN), estimates of human exposure in interplanetary space, behind various thicknesses of aluminum shielding, are made for the large solar proton events of August 1972 and October 1989. A comparison of risk assessment in terms of total absorbed dose for each event is made for the skin, ocular lens, and bone marrow. Overall, the doses associated with the August 1972 event were higher than those with the October 1989 event and appear to be more limiting when compared with current guidelines for dose limits for missions in low Earth orbit and more hazardous with regard to potential acute effects on these organs. Both events could be life-threatening if adequate shielding is not provided.
