Two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical surface trap.

We report on the creation of a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cesium atoms in a gravito-optical surface trap. The condensate is produced a few microm above a dielectric surface on an evanescent-wave atom mirror. After evaporative cooling by all-optical means, expansion measurements for the tightly confined vertical motion show energies well below the vibrational energy quantum. The presence of a condensate is observed in two independent ways by a magnetically induced collapse at negative scattering length and by measurements of the horizontal expansion.

Effect of quantum fluctuations on the dipolar motion of bose-einstein condensates in optical lattices.

We reexamine dipolar motion of condensate atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices and harmonic magnetic traps including quantum fluctuations within the truncated Wigner approximation. In the strong tunneling limit we reproduce the mean field results with a sharp dynamical transition at the critical displacement. When the tunneling is reduced, on the contrary, strong quantum fluctuations lead to finite damping of condensate oscillations even at infinitesimal displacement. We argue that there is a smooth crossover between the chaotic classical transition at finite displacement and the superfluid-to-insulator phase transition at zero displacement. We further analyze the time dependence of the density fluctuations and of the coherence of the condensate and find several nontrivial dynamical effects, which can be observed in the present experimental conditions.

Observation of dynamical instability for a Bose-Einstein condensate in a moving 1D optical lattice.

We have experimentally studied the unstable dynamics of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a 1D moving optical lattice. The lifetime of the condensate in such a potential exhibits a dramatic dependence on the quasimomentum state. This is unambiguously attributed to the onset of dynamical instability, after a comparison with the predictions of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory. Deeply in the unstable region we observe the rapid appearance of complex structures in the atomic density profile, as a consequence of the condensate phase uniformity breakdown.

Interference of an array of independent Bose-Einstein condensates.

We have observed high-contrast matter wave interference between 30 Bose-Einstein condensates with uncorrelated phases. Interferences were observed after the independent condensates were released from a one-dimensional optical lattice and allowed to overlap. This phenomenon is explained with a simple theoretical model, which generalizes the analysis of the interference of two condensates.

Exact analysis of soliton dynamics in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.

We propose an integrable model of a multicomponent spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in one dimension, which allows an exact description of the dynamics of bright solitons with spin degrees of freedom. We consider specifically an atomic condensate in the F=1 hyperfine state confined by an optical dipole trap. When the mean-field interaction is attractive (c(0)<0) and the spin-exchange interaction of a spinor condensate is ferromagnetic (c(2)<0), we prove that the system possesses a completely integrable point leading to the existence of multiple bright solitons. By applying results from the inverse scattering method, we analyze a collision law for two-soliton solutions and find that the dynamics can be explained in terms of the spin precession.

Extraordinary wetting phase diagram for mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates.

The possibility of wetting phase transitions in Bose-Einstein condensed gases is predicted on the basis of Gross-Pitaevskii theory. The surface of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates can undergo a first-order wetting phase transition upon varying the interparticle interactions, using, e.g., Feshbach resonances. Interesting ultra-low-temperature effects shape the wetting phase diagram. The prewetting transition is, contrary to general expectations, not of first order but critical, and the prewetting line does not meet the bulk phase coexistence line tangentially. Experimental verification of these extraordinary results is called for, especially now that it has become possible, using optical methods, to realize a planar "hard wall" boundary for the condensates.

Polariton condensation with localized excitons and propagating photons.

We estimate the condensation temperature for microcavity polaritons, allowing for their internal structure. We consider polaritons formed from localized excitons in a planar microcavity, using a generalized Dicke model. At low densities, we find a condensation temperature T(c) proportional, rho, as expected for a gas of structureless polaritons. However, as T(c) becomes of the order of the Rabi splitting, the structure of the polaritons becomes relevant, and the condensation temperature is that of a BCS-like mean-field theory. We also calculate the excitation spectrum, which is related to observable quantities such as the luminescence and absorption spectra.

Manning-Oosawa counterion condensation.

Counterion condensation is a basic feature of 2D electrostatics exhibited by highly charged rodlike polymers such as DNA. In the framework of the Poisson Boltzmann equation with salt, we show that such a polymer of radius a attracts a condensate of thickness RM=A(axi)1/2 where xi is the Debye length and A depends weakly on the polymer charge density q0. To leading order in 1/ln(xi/a), we derive the condensate structure and show that free ions follow universal density profiles independent of a and q0. Generalizing this approach we calculate ion profiles for finite concentration solutions.

Symmetry breaking and enhanced condensate fraction in a matter-wave bright soliton.

An exact diagonalization study reveals that a matter-wave bright soliton and the Goldstone mode are simultaneously created in a quasi-one-dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein condensate by superpositions of quasidegenerate low-lying many-body states. Upon formation of the soliton the maximum eigenvalue of the single-particle density matrix increases dramatically, indicating that a fragmented condensate converts into a single condensate as a consequence of the breaking of translation symmetry.

Atom Michelson interferometer on a chip using a Bose-Einstein condensate.

An atom Michelson interferometer is implemented on an "atom chip." The chip uses lithographically patterned conductors and external magnetic fields to produce and guide a Bose-Einstein condensate. Splitting, reflecting, and recombining of condensate atoms are achieved by a standing-wave light field having a wave vector aligned along the atom waveguide. A differential phase shift between the two arms of the interferometer is introduced by either a magnetic-field gradient or with an initial condensate velocity. Interference contrast is still observable at 20% with an atom propagation time of 10 ms.

Complete condensation in a zero range process on scale-free networks.

We study a zero range process on scale-free networks in order to investigate how network structure influences particle dynamics. The zero range process is defined with the rate p(n) = n(delta) at which particles hop out of nodes with n particles. We show analytically that a complete condensation occurs when delta < or = delta(c) triple bond 1/(gamma-1) where gamma is the degree distribution exponent of the underlying networks. In the complete condensation, those nodes whose degree is higher than a threshold are occupied by macroscopic numbers of particles, while the other nodes are occupied by negligible numbers of particles. We also show numerically that the relaxation time follows a power-law scaling tau approximately L(z) with the network size L and a dynamic exponent z in the condensed phase.

Photonic band gap via quantum coherence in vortex lattices of Bose-Einstein condensates.

We investigate the optical response of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex lattice. We find that it is possible for the vortex lattice to act as a photonic crystal and create photonic band gaps, by enhancing the refractive index of the condensate via a quantum coherent scheme. If high enough index contrast between the vortex core and the atomic sample is achieved, a photonic band gap arises depending on the healing length and the lattice spacing. A wide range of experimentally accessible parameters are examined and band gaps in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are found. We also show how directional band gaps can be used to directly measure the rotation frequency of the condensate.

Extracting the condensate density from projection experiments with Fermi gases.

A debated issue in the physics of the BCS-BEC crossover with trapped Fermi atoms is to identify characteristic properties of the superfluid phase. Recently, a condensate fraction was measured on the BCS side of the crossover by sweeping the system in a fast (nonadiabatic) way from the BCS to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) sides, thus "projecting" the initial many-body state onto a molecular condensate. We analyze here the theoretical implications of these projection experiments, by identifying the appropriate quantum-mechanical operator associated with the measured quantities and relating them to the many-body correlations occurring in the BCS-BEC crossover. Calculations are presented over wide temperature and coupling ranges, by including pairing fluctuations on top of the mean field.

Pathway from condensation via fragmentation to fermionization of cold bosonic systems.

For small scattering lengths, cold bosonic atoms form a condensate the density profile of which is smooth. With increasing scattering length, the density gradually acquires more and more oscillations. Finally, the number of oscillations equals the number of bosons and the system becomes fermionized. On this pathway from condensation to fermionization intriguing phenomena occur, depending on the shape of the trap. These include macroscopic fragmentation and coexistence of condensed and fermionized parts that are separated in space.

Emergence and decay of turbulence in stirred atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

We show that "weak" elliptical deformation of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate rotating at close to the quadrupole instability frequency leads to turbulence with a Kolmogorov energy spectrum. The turbulent state is produced by energy transfer to condensate fragments that are ejected by the quadrupole instability. This energy transfer is driven by breaking the twofold rotational symmetry of the condensate. Subsequently, vortex-sound interactions damp the turbulent state leading to the crystallization of a vortex lattice.

Observation of phase defects in quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates.

We have observed phase defects in quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates close to the condensation temperature. Either a single or several equally spaced condensates are produced by selectively evaporating the sites of a 1D optical lattice. When several clouds are released from the lattice and allowed to overlap, dislocation lines in the interference patterns reveal nontrivial phase defects.

Low-force DNA condensation and discontinuous high-force decondensation reveal a loop-stabilizing function of the protein Fis.

We report single-DNA-stretching experiments showing that the protein Fis, an abundant bacterial chromosome protein of E. coli, mediates a dramatic DNA condensation to zero length. This condensation occurs abruptly when DNA tension is reduced below a protein-concentration-dependent threshold f* < 1 pN. Following condensation, reopening under larger forces proceeds via a series of discrete jumps, indicating that Fis is able to stabilize DNA crossings. Our experiments suggest that Fis may play a role in vivo stabilizing the "loop-domain" structure of the bacterial chromosome.

Thermodynamics and excitations of condensed polaritons in disordered microcavities.

We study the thermodynamic condensation of microcavity polaritons using a realistic model of disorder in semiconductor quantum wells. This approach correctly describes the polariton inhomogeneous broadening in the low density limit, and treats scattering by disorder to all orders in the condensed regime. While the weak disorder changes the thermodynamic properties of the transition little, the effects of disorder in the condensed state are prominent in the excitations and can be seen in resonant Rayleigh scattering.
