Tapeworm cysts were identified in liver of Wistar rats and it induced fibrosarcoma in liver and gastroenteropathy in stomach and intestine. The tapeworm larva was confirmed as Strobilocercus fasciolaris by PCR linked mitochondrial DNA sequencing. Light microscopy, special staining (masson trichrome) and immunoflouresence supported the diagnosis of fibrosarcoma. Infiltration of plasma cells, macrophages and eosinophils were observed in the liver section. Gastric mucosal hyperplasia, dilation of gastric glands with secretion, intestinal mucosal cell hyperplasia, proliferation of duodenal submucosal glands were confirmed by light microscopy and supported by PAS, AB staining. The concomitant development of hepatic sarcoma and gastroenteropathy by larvae of Taenia taeniaeformis (S. fasciolaris) infection is very rare and is the first reported case in Wistar rats to our knowledge.
Monoclonal antibodies to Leu-7 have been reported to recognize a constituent of myelin-associated glycoprotein. Because of this, the authors studied 20 cases of neurofibrosarcoma (NFS), 7 of leiomyosarcoma (LMS), 3 of fibrosarcoma (FS), 8 of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), 5 of monophasic spindle cell synovial sarcoma (MSS), 5 of neurilemmoma, and 5 of neurofibroma for Leu-7 reactivity, to determine its utility in differential diagnosis. Selected examples of each tumor type were also studied ultrastructurally. Leu-7 was compared with the expression of S-100 protein, myelin basic protein, desmin, cytokeratin, and epithelial membrane antigen in the 43 neoplasms. Fifteen examples of NFS, 2 of LMS, and 2 of MSS were Leu-7+; 2 neurofibromas and 4 neurilemmomas also demonstrated reactivity with this antibody. In contrast, all cases of FS and MFH were Leu-7-. Synovial sarcomas could be effectively separated from NFS by reactivities for cytokeratin and epithelial membrane antigen in the former, but not the latter, lesions. However, LMSs and NFSs demonstrated significant immunocytochemical overlap, including shared positivity for S-100, desmin, and myelin basic protein in several cases. These results suggest that Leu-7 has restricted utility in immunohistochemical diagnosis, and must be utilized only in concert with other antigens. Moreover, it would appear that in selected instances, smooth-muscle and neurogenic sarcomas must be separated on the basis of clinical, histopathologic, and ultrastructural features alone.
A case of primary epithelioid sarcoma of the hard palate is described with no evidence of metastases. Review of the literature revealed no other reported cases of epithelioid sarcoma at this site. The patient, a 20-year-old male negro, returned with 2 local recurrences after initial excision but with no evidence of metastases. He remains well with no evidence of disease at present. This report records a unique primary site for this tumour, and illustrates the diagnostic difficulties, both clinical and histological, which this tumour may present.
Cells derived from mixed Syrian hamster embryo cultures were treated with pyrene (control) or with benzo[a]pyrene. Transformed clones were obtained only with the carcinogen. Some of the transformed clones were responsible for cell lines that produced tumors when injected into hamsters. These observations provide evidence that chemical-induced oncogenesis can be studied by an in vitro model.
A case of sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma arising in the thigh of a 40-year-old man is reported. This recently described sarcoma has a distinctive histological appearance which may cause confusion with a variety of other sarcomas with an epithelioid pattern, and indeed with benign soft tissue tumours showing hyalinization. Despite its bland cytology, sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma is capable of metastases, often several years after surgical removal. The patient described here developed lung metastases five years after excision and remains alive a further three years later. The differential diagnosis and possible histogenesis are discussed.
Albumin clearance and blood flow were measured in normal tissues and in fibrosarcomas by means of a multiple tracer method in intact male rats. Sarcomas implanted in testes had higher albumin clearances than the same tumours implanted in skeletal muscle, 59 and 26 microliters min-1 per 100 g, respectively. Albumin extraction (defined as the ratio of albumin clearance to plasma flow) was found to be 1 x 10(-4) - 14 x 10(-4) in normal tissues. Fibrosarcomas in muscle showed high extractions (24 x 10(-4)), especially in the central portions (96 x 10(-4)), where the extraction was similar to that in tumours implanted in the testes (111 x 10(-4)). The high albumin extraction in poorly perfused central parts of the muscle-implanted tumours and in the similarly insufficiently perfused testicular sarcomas is probably due to an increased endothelial permeability of the exchange vessels and not to an increased capillary exchange surface area compared with the better-perfused peripheral parts of the muscle-implanted tumours. The latter tissue also had a high albumin clearance, however, in the range of that of maximally dilated skeletal muscle vasculature, possibly reflecting a large functional capillary surface area.
Three uterine sarcomas histologically diagnosed as differentiated leiomyosarcomas were studied electron microscopically for differential diagnosis. The study showed not all highly differentiated uterine sarcomas to be of myogenic origin. The histological diagnosis of differentiated leiomyosarcoma which consists mostly of spindle-shaped and elongated cells may often cover tumours of different histogenetic composition. In our material, electron microscopy established leiomyosarcoma in 2 cases, and sarcoma of the fibroblastic type in 1 case.

A total of 39 patients with sarcoma of the soft tissues were treated with carminomycin administered intravenously in doses of 10-15 mg twice a week, the total dose being 60-70 mg. The intervals between the courses were 1 month. The objective effect was observed in 17 out of 39 patients, i. e. 43.6%. The tumor decrease was registered in 6 out of 15 patients with leuomyosarcoma, in 3 out of 6 patients with synovial sarcoma, in 2 out of 4 patients with robdomyosarcoma, in 1 out of 4 patients with angiosarcoma, in 1 out of 3 patients with fibrosarcoma, in 1 patient with liposarcoma and in 3 out of 5 patients with stromal sarcoma of the uterus. A necessity for repeated treatment courses in spite of a positive effect or absence of the disease progress is underlined.
Primary soft tissue tumors of the retroperitoneal space are seldom. In the last 40 years there are only some reports on larger tumor series. But their comparison is merely possible reservedly because in the past the classification of soft tissue tumors was repeatedly changed. Using the diagnostic criteria of the WHO we examined 96 primary tumors of the retroperitoneal soft tissue concerning the distribution of the histological types. 25 cases were classified as benign tumors. 44% of the lesions were benign schwannomas, in the frequency they were followed by leiomyomas (16%), fibromatoses (12%), lipomas (8%) and fibromas (8%). All fibromatoses were localized in the mesenteric radix. 71 tumors were considered to be malignant. The most frequent malignant growths were leiomyosarcomas (24%). Malignant fibrous histiocytomas and liposarcomas constituted 15.5% and 14% of the malignant tumors, resp. Rhabdomyosarcomas were relatively seldom and only of the embryonal type. They exclusively occurred in childhood. Fibrosarcomas were just found in 3% of cases and synovial sarcomas were completely lacking. 17% of all malignant tumors could not be classified with certainty. Whereas the diagnosis of benign soft tissue tumors is not too difficult as a rule the malignant lesions not seldom resist an exact classification. General problems in diagnosis are discussed, differential diagnostic criteria for a clear separation of different tumor entities are presented. Finally the importance of a histological grading of malignant retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors is emphasized.
In a study of 256 nonepithelial neoplasms involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx, 23 lesions were classified as fibrous tissue tumors, including four cases of "fibroma", six of fibromatosis, and thirteen of fibrosarcoma. The clinical findings associated with these lesions are described, their histologic features illustrated, results of therapy presented and clinicopathologic correlations made. The "fibromas" presented a small localized nodules. None recurred after local excision. Fibromatosis, a locally aggressive tumor, does not metastasize, but may cause considerable morbidity or even death due to local infiltration which may be difficult to control surgically. Fibrosarcoma may cause death either by local infiltration or by metastasis, but has a better prognosis than most other sarcomas of this region. We recommend that a large en block resection be performed initially for fibromatosis and fibrosarcoma growing in this area, after the diagnosis has been made by biopsy. In this series, including patients who had more than one operation, recurrent tumor was seen following 10 of 12 limited local excisions performed for fibromatosis and fibrosarcoma, but in only one of 13 patients after a large bloc resection. The problems involved in histologically differentiating fibrous tissue tumors from other lesions are discussed. A patient with the rare syndrome of multicentric fibromatosis with spontaneous regression of lesions is presented.

The evolution of treatment for osteogenic sarcoma at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is reviewed. The possible control of micrometastases by chemotherapy and the excision of macrometastases at single or multiple thoracotomies by the thoracic surgeon have added greatly to the salvage rate of this tumour. Intensive chemotherapy has made possible en bloc resection of bones involved by tumour, with preservation of the limb. Despite advances, however, amputation or en bloc resection is still necessary to control the primary tumour.

Twenty feline vaccine-associated sarcomas were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Tumors contained pleomorphic spindle cells, histiocytoid cells, and giant cells. Most tumors contained myofibroblasts, which had morphologic features similar to those of fibroblasts. These cells were further distinguished by subplasmalemmal dense plaques and thin cytoplasmic actin myofilaments organized as elongated bundles concentrated at irregular intervals forming characteristic dense bodies. Intracellular crystalline particulate material was found in 5 of the 20 tumors. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to identify the crystalline material within one tumor as aluminum-based. One tumor from a feline leukemia virus-infected cat contained budding and immature retroviral particles.
