Software reference guide: master patient index.

Nowhere has the ever-increasing impact of computerization in health care been felt more strongly than in medical record departments. Computer technology has been applied successfully to virtually all of the functions carried out in medical record departments, and most medical record professionals, at one time or another, have investigated the possibility of computerizing some of the activities for which they are responsible. Identifying appropriate software for medical record applications can be a difficult and time-consuming task, however. This article, which provides information about available master patient index software, is the first in a multi-part series developed to assist medical record professionals with this task.

Software: a team approach to investigating the options.

Acquiring a new software package for a healthcare institution is a complicated process. This article, part one of a three-part series, addresses how to investigate the software options. Because the entire structure of contract negotiations may be irrevocably established during this early phase of the process, the institution must assemble a planning team of experts, including knowledgeable legal counsel, to investigate options. Parts two and three of the series will focus on the actual negotiating of license agreements.

Available to commercial market, government 'secret' software integrates 70 health applications.

Government's secret weapon is yours for just $25! The Department of Veterans Affairs VISTA software system could be the answer to less expensive systems integration for many health care organizations. That's what a Georgia hospital has found since installing the core of the software, including the surgery module that tracks a variety of data and outputs nine different types of reports. Here are the details on the product, and how you can order it.

An assessment of the sensitivity of the Cedars-Sinai quantitative gated SPECT software to changes in the reconstruction of the short-axis slices.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed whether variations in count density, reconstruction filtering parameters and the short-axis orientation selected for reconstructions of myocardial short-axis slices significantly influenced the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) calculated from a gated myocardial perfusion SPECT study. METHODS: The Cedars-Sinai quantitative gated SPECT software package was used to estimate the LVEF from gated 99mTc-sestamibi and 201TI gated SPECT studies in 20 patients. Oblique slices were reconstructed 12 times for each study, independently varying the filter cutoff and the orientation of the short axis each time. RESULTS: There were no clinically significant changes in the LVEF over the range of cutoff frequencies or orientation for either the 201TI or 99mTc-sestamibi studies. There was excellent agreement between the LVEF calculated from the 201TI and 99mTc-sestamibi studies on the same patients using the default filter (mean difference = 0.25% points). CONCLUSIONS: The Cedars-Sinai quantitative gated SPECT software package for parallel-hole collimators can be used with confidence to obtain an LVEF, and is not sensitive to variations in count density, filtering parameters or short-axis orientation.

[Kinetic modeling of LDL oxidation using software (NELOP program) and validation in a population at vascular risk].

Oxidized LDL (low density lipoprotein) are considered to be the major initiating event in atherogenesis. In vitro models have been studied but no mathematic modeling can assess quantitatively the oxidability of LDL and antioxidant effects. We have developed a mathematic modeling allowing quantification of different kinetic parameters to LDL oxidation. This model has been validated by means of a software (software NELOP) in normal population (HV) and in a cardiovascular risk population, hemodialysis (HD). LDL are collected and purified by sequential ultracentrifugations from 12 healthy volunteers and hemodialysis patients. LDL oxidability (0.1 microM) is initiated by 5 microM copper and monitored continuously by conjugated diene production. All parameters are evaluated and correlated to those obtained by NELOP. Significant correlations between measured and calculated parameters (Vmax: r2 = 0.99, p < 0.05) allow to validate NELOP in both populations. Our results show that hemodialysis LDL present an enhanced susceptibility to copper induced oxidation (lag time: 96.6 +/- 48.6 mn in HV versus 54.5 +/- 22.2 mn in HD). NELOP seems to be a useful tool to evaluate LDL oxidation in cardiovascular risk populations.

Eight steps to successful hardware and software procurement.

Healthcare organizations purchase new hardware and software to enable them to support changing business needs and improve operating efficiencies. The procurement process, rather than the implementation of hardware and software, sets the stage for success. Eight key steps in the procurement process are to understand the need, capitalize the project, understand the market, structure the right team, gather vendor information, apply drivers and values, integrate process and system, and negotiate wisely. Following these eight steps will help healthcare organizations reap the greatest benefit from their investment.

The use of the arcs software system to store and examine sleep research results.

Ready access to research results is essential if nurses are to keep current with the scientific knowledge available to guide practice. Sigma Theta Tau International has supported the development of a software system that facilitates ongoing storage of information from research reports and can be used to gain online access to continually updated databases of research results called "knowledgebases." One such experimental knowledgebase, the Sleep Promotion Knowledgebase, includes studies of correlates of poor sleep in adults as well as sleep interventions and outcomes. The authors describe the creation of the Sleep Promotion Knowledgebase using arcs BUILDER to store information about research reports and the scientific findings they contain. The use of arcs MAPPER to examine sleep promotion interventions also is described. The strengths and limitations of the software system are identified, and the potential uses of arcs to disseminate sleep research results are discussed.

Revamp your software selection process.

Very few software implementations fail from lack of functionality. More often, the failure results from other factors. Yet most companies continue to focus primarily on software functionality during the selection and evaluation process. By expanding the scope of your evaluation process to include other important factors, your probability of successful implementation and future happiness with your vendor can be dramatically enhanced.

A software tool for fetal blood flow analysis.

Doppler ultrasonography is a widely used technique for determination of the fetal blood flow pattern. Determination of the waveform qualities was done manually, with considerable inter- and intraobserver variations. In order to limit the variations and the time-consuming data entry, a Fetal Blood Flow Analysis software program was developed to facilitate ease of determination of Doppler signals. This article describes the development and unique features of the software program, made specifically to meet the obstetric and gynecology department's needs.
