[Personality traits of patients under spa treatment (author's transl)].

The article reports on psychodiagnostic examinations performed on clients under in-patient spa treatment. The groups studied--patients with psychosomatic and general internal diseases--were subjected to the Freiburg personality inventory, the colour pyramid test and the progressive matrices test. The results were compared with normal population standards and clinically diagnosed neurotic patients. Furthermore, the spa treatment results of the psychosomatic patients were recorded during the third and fifth week. The most important outcome was that both groups of patients presented a series of typically abnormal signs as regards clinically relevant factors, whereby the psychosomatic patients presented a very similar test picture to the in-patient clients receiving psychotherapy. In contrast to the patients with general internal diseases the psychosomatic patients showed more neurotic personality traits than the standard. The degree of severity of the clinically diagnosed neurotic disturbances is reflected in the neuroticism test values. In the psychosomatic patients the psychic complaints, in the narrow sense, were predominant. The complaints as a whole showed a regressive trend; of the individual complaints only physical fatigue diminished markedly. Periodically recurring symptoms were not observed.

Balneology↗

[Ongoing conflict situations and physical disease].

In most cases psychosomatic patients are not vitally threatened. Nevertheless almost half of the emergency patients have got psychical disturbances (e.g. neurotic heart disease, states of hyperventilation or vertigo). A reason is not only the personal development of early childhood. More often the problems are to be found within strained relations. The physical illness can be conceived as an (unconscious) attempt to master a conflict or loss, as narcissistic reparation, as adaption-effort or even as self destruction Selye's theory of stress presents the linkage between the organ pathology and the influence of the psychosocial situation. Examples of medical cases explain these correlations.

Models of health and disease.

This paper describes and analyses six models of health and disease. These are: religious, biomedical, psychosomatic, humanistic, existential and transpersonal. Of these six models, only one was unequivocally reductionist: the biomedical. The others were all holistic. The religious, humanistic and transpersonal models could be considered as health models, the biomedical, psychosomatic and existential models as disease or illness models. The different models were assumed to depict different, but related, ways of representing health and disease. It is probable that different groups in society, including the different groups in the health service--doctors, nurses and patients--look at health and illness from partly different models. This is considered to have significant implications for the health service.

[Life stress events and individual reactions to stress in relation to illness].

Data was collected from 90 persons in relation to the level of their emotional reactions to life's difficulties as well as to the number of somatic symptoms. It was concluded that falling ill with certain infectious diseases and some psychosomatic states are related to the increased level of emotional processes and the number of psychosomatic symptoms to stress.
