Correlations among climbing fiber responses of nearby cerebellar Purkinje cells in the immature rat.

Correlations between pairs of spontaneous climbing fiber responses (CFRs) recorded from couples of nearby Purkinje cells (PCs) were studied in immature rats by using cross-correlograms between CFR pairs, and compaired to those in adult animals. Correlations were found as early as day 3. Some days later, on PN days 7--9, these correlations were higher than in the adult. In most cases, this was apparently not due to the multiple innervation of PC by climbing fibers (CFs) which normally occurs during this immature stage since: 1) temporal relationships between the paired CFRs varied by more than 30 ms and 2) thresholds for pairs of graded CFRs and additional components of the responses evoked in the 2 PCs by juxtafastigial or olivary stimulation were different. Synchronizing mechanisms were therefore likely to be already located at the olivary level. However, in 3 couples of multiply innervated PCs whose spontaneous CF activities were highly correlated, stimulation experiments revealed a common innervation of the 2 cells by branches of the same CF. In multiply innervated cells, spontaneous responses mediated through distinct CFs were also synchronized, suggesting that these fibers originate from neighboring neurons of the inferior olive. Finally, in 7 to 9-day-old rats, correlations among CFR pairs were much more restricted in the longitudinal axis of the folium than in the transverse one. On the whole, the present study indicates that correlations among CFRs of nearby PCs exist as soon as CF-PC synapses are established and the latter are already organized in sagittal strips at early stages of development.

Correlates of intestinal calcium absorption in women 10 years past the menopause.

Because intestinal calcium absorption may be an important independent determinant of calcium balance and therefore bone mass, we have studied this factor and other potential predictors in 196 healthy postmenopausal women. Gut calcium absorption was measured in each subject by a stable strontium method and expressed as a fractional absorption. The fractional absorption was significantly negatively correlated with years since menopause (YSM) (r = -0.15 P < 0.05) and dietary calcium intake (r = -0.15 P < 0.05), and significantly positively correlated with 24-hour urine calcium excretion (r = 0.31 P < 0.001) and body mass index (r = 0.20 P < 0.01). Apart from YSM, these factors remained as correlates in multiple regression analysis; the standardized regression coefficient was largest for 24-hour urine calcium excretion (0.32). Fractional absorption of calcium was not correlated with vertebral bone density. Thus, intestinal calcium absorption, although falling with increasing menopausal age and increasing calcium intake, is best correlated with the urine calcium excretion. This indicates either that gut calcium absorption is regulated in response to the magnitude of the urine calcium excretion or that the kidney maintains calcium balance by excreting what is absorbed by the intestine. The mechanisms whereby gut and renal calcium handling are correlated are uncertain.

Stimulus dependent neural correlations in the auditory midbrain of the grassfrog (Rana temporaria L.).

Few-unit recordings were obtained using metal microelectrodes. Separation into single-unit spike trains was based on differences in spike amplitude and spike waveform. For that purpose a hardware microprocessor based spike waveform analyser was designed and built. Spikes are filtered by four matched filters and filter outputs at the moments of spike occurrence are read by a computer and used for off-line separation and spike waveform reconstruction. Thirty-one double unit recordings were obtained and correlation between the separated spike trains was determined. After stimulus correction correlation remained in only 8 of the double unit records. It appeared that in most cases this neural correlation was stimulus dependent. Continuous noise stimulation resulted in the strongest neural correlation remaining after correction for stimulus coupling, stimulation with 48 ms duration tonepips presented once per second generally did not result in a significant neural correlation after the correction procedure for stimulus lock. The usefulness of the additive model for neural correlation and the correction procedure based thereupon is discussed.

Modified barium swallow: clinical and radiographic correlation and relation to feeding recommendations.

Clinical and videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing were correlated to determine their agreement and relationship to feeding recommendations. We reviewed a total of 148 patients with swallowing difficulties, of which 93 (45 women, 48 men; mean age 62 years) were evaluated by both clinical and radiographic examinations. A variety of materials were used for clinical bedside evaluation of oral and pharyngeal function. Radiographic examination was done with variable viscosity materials and videotape recording of the oral cavity and pharynx. The severity of oral and pharyngeal abnormalities was graded and findings of the examinations were compared. The combined results of both evaluations generated an index of swallowing difficulty which was correlated to the type of diet used if oral feeding was recommended or to a nonoral route of nutrition. In the assessment of oral and pharyngeal dysfunction, clinical evaluation and radiographic examination correlated closely in 94% of patients; however, the status of pharyngeal function was not determined in 61 (66%) of the 93 patients by clinical examination alone. The combined swallowing index was calculated in 89 patients and its severity correlated significantly with the type of feeding recommended; 64 patients were placed on one of three types of diets and 25 had enteral feedings. In conclusion, combined clinical and radiographic examinations correlated well, but clinical evaluation alone was limited by failure to evaluate the pharynx in many patients. The swallowing severity correlated well with final feeding recommendations.

Correlates of depressed mood in normal children.

Two instruments which have been proposed as measures of clinical depression in children and an ad hoc teacher rating were given to a group of 109 normal children. The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the Peer Nomination Inventory for Depression (PNID), and a teacher rating of depression were given along with the Conners Teacher Rating Scale (TRS), teacher ratings of somatic complaints, peer popularity, and absenteeism, and peer ratings of popularity to examine the behavioral correlates of depressed mood in normal children. While few sex differences were found on mean depression scores, different patterns of correlations were found for the two sexes. For males, there were no significant correlations among the three depression measures, but all three depression measures were correlated with unpopularity and conduct problem ratings on the TRS. For females, the three depression measures were adequately intercorrelated. The teacher rating of depression was correlated with general deviance as measured by the TRS, but the CDI and PNID were correlated with TRS ratings of conduct problems, with peer ratings of unpopularity, and with teacher ratings of somatic complaints. Implications for the issue of the possible existence of a clinical syndrome of depression in children were discussed.

Correlations of pedometer readings with energy expenditure in workers during free-living daily activities.

In a total of 23 subjects consisting of 10 clerical and 13 assembly workers in a factory, the pedometer readings during a day of free-living activity were analyzed for the relation with energy expenditure as determined by the simultaneously recorded 24-hour heart rate. The 24-hour energy expenditures in the clerical and assembly workers were 9515 kJ (2274 kcal) and 9698 kJ (2318 kcal) respectively. The whole day readings of the pedometer for all the subjects moderately correlated (r = 0.438, p less than 0.05) with the net energy cost (NEC) as determined by subtracting the sleeping metabolic cost from the energy expenditure (clerical workers: r = 0.781, p less than 0.01; assembly workers: r = 0.188, p less than 0.05). The correlation analysis of the pedometer readings with the NEC in three activity phases in a day (work, commuting and staying at home), showed that the extent of the relationship differed by job types and activity phases. The best correlation was obtained during commuting in both of the job types (clerical workers: r = 0.843, p less than 0.01; assembly workers: r = 0.743, p less than 0.01). During work, a quite strong correlation (r = 0.889, p less than 0.01) was obtained with the clerical workers but not with the assembly workers. No significant correlations were found in the data while the subjects were at home. The capacity of the pedometer to detect the impacts of body movements, and the characteristics of activity, are responsible for the differences in correlation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Estimating genetic correlations from inbred strains.

Genetic correlations measure the extent of pleiotropic effects of polygenes on pairs of characters or the closeness of linkage between sets of loci influencing the traits and held in allelic (gametic) disequilibrium. Their importance for research lies primarily in predicting correlated responses of one trait to selection based on values for another, and secondarily in analyzing the complex organization of biological systems. Genetic correlations appear to limit the rate and set the direction of multivariate evolution. In view of this, efficient methods for estimating genetic correlations may be essential for understanding the role of behavior in adaptation and for predicting behavioral change in evolution. In this paper we present methods for the estimation of genetic correlations from inbred strain comparisons. Estimates from inbred strains are relatively easy to obtain and appear to be valid when compared to those derived from more demanding parent-offspring comparisons and to correlated responses to selection.

Brain electrical correlates of psychological measures: strategies and problems.

We explore relationships between brain electrical activity and cognitive performance where qEEG data are correlated with psychological variables gathered at a different time. For a population of 202 healthy adults using univariate and multivariate correlation techniques in a split half replication design, we confirm prior findings that subjects with better psychological scores show shorter evoked potential (EP) latency, suggesting that speed of processing is an important factor in cognitive performance. By canonical correlation we demonstrate a consistent, replicable relationship between electrophysiological and behavioral data. We suggest that reliance upon univariate correlation may have fueled early controversies about relationships between electrophysiology and IQ. In addition we correlate psychological factors with the entire qEEG data set (both EP and spectral analyzed EEG) and demonstrate the use a multidimensional image graphics techniques to assist in visual assessment of the resulting correlation matrices.

The correlation between blood pressure and morphometric findings in children with congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.

The lungs of 68 children with malformations of the heart or the great vessels which could cause pulmonary hypertension were obtained at autopsy. We analysed the media of muscular pulmonary arteries morphometrically and calculated the area ratio (area media/total area of the vessel). As hemodynamic parameter we used the systolic blood pressure ratio (pulmonary/systemic). Additionally we employed the mean pressure of the pulmonary artery in 38 cases. We analysed the correlation between hemodynamic and morphometric parameters and obtained a product moment correlation of 0.7. There was a linear correlation between the area and pressure ratios. Younger children showed a higher relative thickness of the media than older children with comparable pressure ratios. After dividing the children into three age groups, we obtained an even higher correlation (r = 0.90 in the oldest group). We found these correlations not only in cases with left-to-right shunt but also in children with other heart defects. There was also a good correlation between the quantitatively measured data and the qualitative Heath and Edwards classification.

Correlations between mental state and quantitative neuropathology in the Vienna Longitudinal Study on Dementia.

Quantitative clinicopathological correlation studies are one way to address the question of the relevance of morphological abnormalities in Alzheimer's dementia (AD). This paper summarizes results of the Vienna Longitudinal Study on Dementia obtained during the past few years and presents a critical discussion on the relevance of clinicopathological correlation studies for the pathogenesis of AD. Plotting of psychometric test scores against the numbers of plaques, tangles and neuropil threads in various cortical areas shows that significant correlations are due primarily to very high lesion counts in severely demented patients. These data indicate that neocortical neurofibrillary pathology can be considered an end-stage marker in the pathology of AD. On the other hand, the topographical staging of neuritic Alzheimer changes proposed by Braak and Braak (1991) appears to be a better reflection of the progression of the degenerative process than numerical lesion counts; there is a linear correlation between the Braak stages and Mini-Mental State scores in 122 aged individuals. Significant correlations are further obtained between the severity of dementia and the levels of a number of synaptic proteins including synaptophysin and the chromogranins. Taken together, our data suggest that none of the classical AD lesions, plaques and tangles, play a central role in the pathogenesis of dementia, a fact that is supported by a molecular biological study showing that there is no close relationship between these lesions and the neurons undergoing degeneration in AD. Whereas neuritic pathology is a useful histopathological marker for the diagnosis and staging of AD, the major correlate of cognitive deficits is the loss of corticocortical and subcorticocortical connections reflected by a depletion of synapses. This pathology may be induced by a mismetabolism of the beta-amyloid precursor proteins or their interaction with cytoskeletal proteins related to neuronal degeneration.

Organization of motor and posture patterns in paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis): environmental and genetic components of phenotypical correlation structures.

Paradise fish exhibit complex, environment-specific behavioral responses which consist of behavioral elements (motor and posture patterns) appearing in a typical, correlated manner. The genetic and environmental components underlying these phenotypical correlations have not been comprehensively investigated. Therefore, we have analyzed the behavioral elements of paradise fish from the nine populations of a 3 x 3 full diallel cross by employing a bivariate extension of the Hayman-Jinks variance-covariance analysis, demonstrating the presence of significant environmental and genetic correlations. To investigate the multivariate structure of the correlation matrices obtained, we subjected the phenotypical, environmental, additive genetic, and dominance correlations to principal-component analyses (PCAs). After rotation, the phenotypical principal factor pattern found was similar to previously obtained ones, suggesting stable underlying biological mechanisms. The environmental PCA extracted several environmental principal factors that were highly situation-specific. PCAs of the matrices of genetic correlations extracted only a small number of genetic principal factors which were not situation-specific, suggesting a relatively simple underlying genetic structure.

ELISA assays for IgM and IgG rheumatoid factors: their clinical correlations during therapy with slow-acting anti-rheumatic drugs.

A longitudinal study of changes in rheumatoid factor levels and their correlations with other clinical and laboratory assessment of disease activity followed 45 rheumatoid arthritis patients during 12 months continuous therapy with gold and penicillamine. Rheumatoid factors were measured by the titred latex assay and by ELISA assays for IgM and IgG rheumatoid factor. The IgM ELISA assay correlated strongly with the titred latex assay and weakly with the IgG rheumatoid factor assay at 0, 6 and 12 months. All showed significant falls with treatment, and ELISA assays were not more sensitive indicators than the latex assay. Correlations of initial rheumatoid factor levels by all 3 assays to 34 other clinical and laboratory assessments showed that only a small number of weak correlations existed; there were more at 6 and 12 months, but still not many. Changes in rheumatoid factor levels over 0-6 months showed no significant correlation to changes in other variables. There were no more correlations with ELISA assays than with titred latex rheumatoid factor. We conclude that ELISA rheumatoid factor assays have no clinically relevant advantage over the titred latex assay when following rheumatoid patients treated with gold or penicillamine.

Interleukin-10 and interleukin-6 in lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, correlations with acute phase proteins.

We sought to investigate the influence of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and IL-6 on the acute phase proteins (APP) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). IL-10, IL-6, Creactive protein (CRP), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), and alpha1 antichymotrypsin (ACT) serum levels were determined in one hundred-eight patients (71 with SLE, 37 with RA). Quantification of the serum IL-10 level showed increased levels in SLE and RA patients as compared to healthy controls. Serum IL-6 level was found to be elevated in SLE and RA patients. A correlation between IL-10 and IL-6 serum level was found only in SLE. CRP and AGP serum levels were increased in RA as compared to controls, whereas in SLE only AGP was found elevated. A statistically significant correlation between IL-6 serum level and CRP, AGP and ACT was found only in RA. No correlation between IL-10 and serum level of CRP, AGP and ACT was established. Since IL-10 has a potent immunosuppressive activity, we expected it to be negatively correlated with APP levels. Surprisingly, IL-10 did not correlate with APP either in SLE or RA patients. However, the elevation of IL-10 serum levels in SLE and RA and the correlation between IL-10 and IL-6 in SLE may suggest that IL-10 may play a central role in inflammatory connective tissue diseases.

A postmortem correlation of four techniques of assessment of osteoporosis with force of bone compression.

Prosected vertebrae and phalanges from 32 cadavera were examined using noninvasive methods commonly used for assessment of osteoporosis. Bone measures were then compared with a strength variable obtained by mechanically crushing or breaking the bones. All of the phalangeal density assessment techniques were found to be significantly correlated with the bone strength. The highest correlations were between bone mineral content and strength. In vertebral samples (cubes with 2 cm sides), bone mineral content corrected for bone width (BMC/BW) was significantly correlated with the force at the first deviation from linearity. Correlations between the computed tomography number and bone strength were negligible. Bone strength of the vertebrae was significantly correlated to that of the fingers. Photon absorptometric (SPA) measurements of the vertebrae correlated significantly with corresponding measures of the phalanges. BMC/BW appeared as the first or second variable selected as a predictor of bone strength in the multiple regression analysis. Throughout this entire study, BMC or BMC/BW were the only variables that were consistently related to the strength variables.

Vaginal topography does not correlate well with visceral position in women with pelvic organ prolapse.

The objective was to determine whether vaginal topography accurately predicts the location of the pelvic viscera on fluoroscopy in women with pelvic organ prolapse. Eighty-nine women undergoing preoperative evaluation for reconstructive pelvic surgery at a tertiary care referral practice formed the study population. Each woman completed a comprehensive urogynecologic history and physical examination, which included a quantified (POP-Q) assessment of her vaginal topography, as described by Bump et al. In addition each woman underwent pelvic floor fluoroscopy (PFF). Visceral sites were selected which corresponded clinically to the vaginal sites measured by the POP-Q. The most dependent portion of the bladder, small intestine, rectum and urethrovesical junction was measured. Twenty-five (28%) women had stage II prolapse, 34 (38%) had stage III prolapse, and 28 (32%) had stage IV prolapse. The remaining 2 women were symptomatic, with stage I prolapse. For the entire study population there was no correlation between the fluoroscopic position of the small bowel and/or rectum and any apical or posterior wall POP-Q site (C, Ap or Bp). There was no correlation with the fluoroscopic position of the UVJ at rest or with straining and the corresponding POP-Q site (Aa). The fluoroscopic position of the most dependent portion of the bladder correlated only modestly with the upper (Ba, rho = 0.51) and lower Aa, rho = 0.68) anterior vaginal wall POP-Q sites. In women without prior surgery (n = 33) there was only modest correlation between the fluoroscopic position of the bladder and the corresponding POP-Q site (Aa, rho = 0.71). In this unoperated subpopulation there was no correlation with PFF and any other POP-Q site. In women who had undergone prior hysterectomy (n = 25) or hysterectomy with anterior and/or posterior colporrhaphy (n = 17), there was only a modest correlation of the most dependent portion of the bladder and the upper anterior vaginal wall site (Bb, rho = 0.67 and rho = 0.55, respectively). It was concluded that vaginal topography does not reliably predict the position of the associated viscera on PFF in women with primary or recurrent pelvic organ prolapse.

Correlations in one-dimensional fully developed chaos.

Correlations in the baker map and the tent map as examples of one-dimensional, fully developed chaos are considered. It is shown, utilizing symbolic dynamical systems derived from these maps, that the vanishing second-order correlation function is not sufficient to guarantee uncorrelatedness. Importance of the higher-order, especially third-order, correlation functions is emphasized for chaotic systems. In search of the quantities that grasp correlational behaviors as a whole in chaotic systems, it is proposed to use the fixed-separation correlation integral, which is a modified quantity of the usual correlation integral devised to calculate the fractal dimension of strange attractors, for these maps. It is shown that the new quantity contains all the even-number orders of autocorrelation function that are commonly considered.

Correlation between the expression of Fas, Bcl-2 in peripheral blood lymphocytes and the level of IFN-gamma, IL-4 in serum of patients with condyloma acuminata.

In order to investigate the correlation between the expression of the apoptotic regulatory proteins (Fas, Bcl-2) in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLC) and the level of IFN-gamma and IL-4 in serum of the patients with condyloma acuminata (CA) in the immune pathogenesis of CA, indirect immunofluorescence labeling method of flow cytometer and solid sandwich ELISA method were performed for detecting the expression of Fas, Bcl-2 in PBLC and the level of IFN-gamma and IL-4 in serum of 60 cases of CA. The results showed the expression level of Fas in PBLC of CA was significantly higher than in the normal control group, but the expression level of Bcl-2 was significantly lower (both P<0.01). The level of IFN-gamma in serum of CA was significantly lower than in the normal control group (P<0.01), but IL-4 was significantly lower (both P<0.01). The expression of Fas in PBLC had a negative correlation with the level of IFN-gamma in serum of patients with CA, but had a positive correlation with the level of IL-4; The expression of Bcl-2 had a positive correlation with the level of IFN-gamma, but had a negative correlation with the level of IL-4. All the correlation coefficients had significant difference by t test (P<0.01). It was suggested abnormal apoptosis in PBLC, the suppressed secretion of the TH1-associated cytokines (eg: IFN-gamma) and the increased secretion of the TH2-associated cytokines (eg: IL-4) existed in the patients with CA and might play an important role in the immune pathogenesis of CA.

Accuracy of four indirect methods of blood pressure measurement, with hemodynamic correlations.

In 38 adults undergoing cardiac surgery, 4 indirect blood pressure techniques were compared with brachial arterial blood pressure at predetermined intervals before and after cardiopulmonary bypass. Indirect blood pressure measurement techniques included automated oscillometry, manual auscultation, visual onset of oscillation (flicker) and return-to-flow methods. Hemodynamic measurements or calculations included heart rate, cardiac index, stroke volume index, and systemic vascular resistance index. Indirect and intraarterial blood pressure values were compared by simple linear regression by patient and measurement period. Measurement errors (arterial minus indirect blood pressure) were calculated, and stepwise regression assessed the relationship between measurement error and heart rate, cardiac index, stroke volume index, and systemic vascular resistance index. Indirect to intraarterial blood pressure correlation coefficients varied over time, with the strongest correlations often occurring at the first and last measurement periods (preinduction and 60 minutes after cardiopulmonary bypass), particularly for systolic blood pressure. Within-patient correlations between indirect and arterial blood pressure varied widely--they were consistently high or low in some patients. In other patients, correlations were especially weak with a particular indirect blood pressure method for systolic, mean, or diastolic blood pressure; in some cases indirect blood pressure was inadequate for clinical diagnosis of acute blood pressure changes or trends. The mean correlations between indirect and direct blood pressure values were, for systolic blood pressure: 0.69 for oscillometry, 0.77 for auscultation, 0.73 for flicker, and 0.74 for return-to-flow; for mean blood pressure: 0.70 for oscillometry and 0.73 for auscultation; and for diastolic blood pressure: 0.73 for oscillometry and 0.69 for auscultation. The mean measurement errors (arterial minus indirect values) for the individual indirect blood pressure methods were, for systolic: 0 mm Hg for oscillometry, 9 mm Hg for auscultation, -5 mm Hg for flicker, 7 mm Hg for return-to-flow; for mean: -6 mm Hg for oscillometry, and -3 mm Hg for auscultation; and for diastolic: -9 mm Hg for oscillometry and -8 mm Hg for auscultation. Mean measurement error for systolic blood pressure was thus least with automated oscillometry and greatest with manual auscultation, while standard deviations ranging from 9 to 15 mm Hg confirmed the highly variable nature of single indirect blood pressure measurements. Except for oscillometric diastolic blood pressure, a combination of systemic hemodynamics (heart rate, stroke volume index, systemic vascular resistance index, and cardiac index) correlated with each indirect blood pressure measurement error, which suggests that particular numeric ranges of these variables minimize measurement error.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
