INTRODUCTION: Childhood and adolescence are critical periods in the development and stabilisation of health behaviour and risk behaviour. Typically, individual health behaviour developed during this phase of life is carried into adulthood. The goal of this data analysis was to conduct an international comparison of adverse health behaviour among adolescents, to interpret differences between countries, and to make recommendations for future health promotion and prevention programmes. METHODS: The international comparative study "Health Behaviour in School-aged Children" (HBSC) serves as the basis for this data analysis. HBSC is conducted by the WHO (World Health Organization) every four years. The four health behaviour indicators selected from the HBSC study for this analysis include tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and eating behaviour. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Large differences in adolescent health behaviour were identified among the countries of the EU and the USA. German youth when compared with youth in other countries, have higher rates for most selected indicators. To enhance success, prevention and health promotion programmes in Germany should adopt effective strategies from other countries, and include gender-specific and comprehensive programming aspects. Based on this comparison, it is recommended that health interventions should be tailored to the cultural, social, economic and political conditions of a particular country.
The results of a health practice questionnaire submitted to the 152 physician members of the Palo Alto Medical Clinic, 126 of whom responded, indicate a generally favorable profile of preventive medicine strategies. Physicians generally smoke less, drink about the same, exercise more, and use their seat belts more than the population at large. They also can expect to live longer. These results are compared with those of other physician surveys and surveys of the general public.
BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health problem in the United States, and victims are commonly encountered in medical settings. Many barriers exist to clinician-initiated screening for IPV. However, smoking and problem drinking are conditions that clinicians commonly screen for and both have been strongly associated with IPV in prior studies. By estimating the predicted probability of 12-month and lifetime IPV for a given patient based on whether she presents with these conditions, our study gives clinicians information that can help them identify patients at risk for IPV. METHODS: A cross-sectional written patient survey was administered to 2386 female patients at 8 different health care settings in the Greater Boston (Mass) metropolitan area. The probabilities of 12-month and lifetime IPV were estimated based on the women's self-report of smoking and drinking behaviors. RESULTS: A woman who neither smoked nor engaged in problem drinking had a 10% probability of IPV in the preceding 12 months and a 39% chance of IPV in her lifetime. Smoking increased the probability to 14% and 49%, respectively. Problem drinking resulted in a doubling of the predicted probability of 12-month IPV to 21%, with a lifetime probability of 43%. When both conditions were present, the effects were additive, with a woman having a 27% probability of experiencing IPV in the preceding 12 months and 54% chance of IPV in her lifetime. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of smoking or problem drinking should raise clinicians' suspicion for IPV. This paradigm should not replace direct questioning about IPV but may aid in the detection of abuse in patient populations.
The association of health behaviour, indicators of social adjustment, and psychosomatic symptoms with diagnosed asthma was assessed in a community-based sample of 4550 adolescents in South Western Sydney, Australia. The results of this survey found an asthma prevalence among 11-15-year-olds of 17.5%, being consistent with previous studies. Tobacco use and alcohol consumption were higher among asthmatic compared with nonasthmatic adolescents. Asthmatics reported feeling lonely more often, having a number of negative social perceptions and feelings, and having more frequent psychosomatic symptoms. The findings of the study suggest that adolescents with asthma represent an important vulnerable group of school children. Asthma education may need a greater life-style change focus, besides asthma self-management training.

Circulatory system diseases are the epidemic of our times. According to epidemiologic statistics concerning Poland, they are the major cause of deaths. Among diseases associated with circulatory system, ischemia results in substantial number of deaths. However, we can decrease the risk of ischemia by changing the lifestyle. Our research tries to examine and judge the lifestyle of teenagers from Bytom's schools as well as prevention of circulatory diseases--mainly ischemia is concerned. We examined 205 students from secondary schools. The obtained results are not satisfactory. Lack of knowledge linked with good health manners or even improper and anti-health manners of young people may have significant impact on the development of circulatory system diseases in adult life.
A total of 419 students in the first half of their curriculum (243 medical students, 39 engineering students, 36 sociology students and 101 law students) replied to a self-administered questionnaire during autumn 1988 and spring 1989. The questionnaire was concerned with health and included, among other things, their attitudes to doctors' health behaviour. The objects of the questionnaire were 1) to reveal the number of restrictive students who consider that doctors should show a good example as regards health behaviour e.g. as regards smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and physical exercise), 2) to characterize the social profiles of the restrictive students, 3) to assess whether the attitudes and behaviour are in agreement and 4) to assess whether the proportion of restrictive medical students differs from the other students. The result of the questionnaire reveals that 44.4% of all the students were restrictive. The social profiles of these students showed a slight difference from those of the non-restrictive students but only as regards variables related to health behaviour. No difference was found in the degree of restrictiveness in medical students and the remaining students. In addition, the investigation revealed that there was only a slight association between attitudes to doctors' health behaviour and their own health behaviour.
Caries risk factors such as the number of microbe CFU in plaque and saliva, the content of inorganic ion in plaque and saliva and the capability of remineralization of the teeth, is responsible to forecast the development of caries to some content. On the other hand, oral health behaviours also make a great deal in the development of caries. While in terms of children, the parents have an enormous effect on their behaviours. In order to help forecasting the development of caries more effectively, this paper makes a review about the influence of oral health behaviour of parents and children to caries risk factors of children.

This study examines the longitudinal (48 months) effects of a preventive services intervention trial with Medicare beneficiaries. The health promotion intervention incorporated a series of workshops and targeted individualized counseling dealing primarily with nutrition and exercise. All subjects completed a health risk appraisal (HRA) questionnaire, which served as a dependent measure. Results show significant, positive changes in intervention subjects in two activity outcomes, aerobic activity and stretching exercises. Although previous research on this cohort found significant positive changes in nutrition behaviors at 12-month follow-up, these differences were not sustained over the three-year follow-up period. The results offer encouragement that continued research on health promotion will eventually produce protocols for select activities that will improve the status of seniors' health.
