Reproducibility of Tl-201 and Tc-99m sestamibi gated myocardial perfusion SPECT measurement of myocardial function.

BACKGROUND: We compared the reproducibility of thallium 201 and technetium 99m sestamibi (MIBI) gated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) measurement of myocardial function using the Germano algorithm (J Nucl Med 1995;36:2138-47). METHODS AND RESULTS: Gated SPECT acquisition was repeated in the same position in 30 patients who received Tl-201 and in 26 who received Tc-99m-MIBI. The quantification of end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), and ejection fraction (EF) on Tl-201 and Tc-99m-MIBI gated SPECT was processed independently with Cedars-Sinai QGS (Quantitative Gated SPECT) software. The reproducibility of the measurement of ventricular function on Tl-201 gated SPECT was compared with that of Tc-99m-MIBI gated SPECT. Correlation between the 2 measurements for volumes and EF was excellent for the repeated gated SPECT studies of Tl-201 (r = 0.928 to 0.986, P <.05) and Tc-99m-MIBI (r = 0.979 to 0.997, P <.05). However, Bland-Altman analysis revealed the 95% limits of agreement (2 SDs) for volumes and EF were narrower by repeated Tc-99m-MIBI gated SPECT (EDV 14.1 mL, ESV 9.4 mL, EF 5.5%) than by repeated Tl-201 gated SPECT (EDV 24.1 mL, ESV 18.6 mL, EF 10.3%). The root-mean-square values of the coefficient of variation for volumes and EF were smaller by repeated Tc-99m-MIBI gated SPECT (EDV 2.1 mL, ESV 2.7 mL, EF 2.3%) than by repeated Tl-201 gated SPECT (EDV 3.2 mL, ESV 3.5 mL, EF 5.2%). CONCLUSIONS: QGS provides an excellent correlation between repeated gated SPECT with Tl-201 and Tc-99m-MIBI. However, Tc-99m-MIBI provides more reproducible volumes and EF than Tl-201. Tc-99m-MIBI gated SPECT is the preferable method for the clinical monitoring of ventricular function.

Visual assessment of left ventricular perfusion and function with electrocardiography-gated SPECT has high intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility among experienced nuclear cardiologists and cardiology trainees.

BACKGROUND: Stress electrocardiography (ECG)-gated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) for assessment of left ventricular perfusion and function improves the confidence of interpretation and enhances specificity for detection of coronary artery disease. The reproducibility of visual interpretation of ECG-gated SPECT images and the significance of training and experience have not been reported previously in a large series of consecutive patients. We evaluated both intraobserver and interobserver agreement of interpretation of ECG-gated SPECT images among 3 cardiology trainees and 3 experienced nuclear cardiologists from 3 institutions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three nuclear cardiologists and 3 cardiology trainees who had fulfilled American College of Cardiology/American Society of Nuclear Cardiology Core Cardiology Training Symposium (ACC/ASNC COCATS) guidelines for level II training in nuclear cardiology independently evaluated 106 consecutive technetium 99m sestamibi SPECT images with ECG gating of either the stress or rest images. All cases were interpreted blindly, twice in random sequence, without clinical data. We assessed intraobserver and interobserver agreement for myocardial perfusion, left ventricular regional and global systolic function, and overall clinical impression, by means of percent agreement and Cohen's kappa statistic. Intraobserver agreement was good (82%-92%, kappa = 0.54-0.84) for assessment of myocardial perfusion, systolic function, and overall impression. Interobserver agreement was also good, ranging from 65% to 90% (kappa = 0.32-0.76), with better agreement found for assessment of function (77%-85%, kappa = 0.52-0.7) than for perfusion (65%-80%, kappa = 0.32-0.6). For all measures, there were no significant differences in reproducibility between nuclear cardiologists and cardiology trainees. CONCLUSIONS: Interpretation of ECG-gated SPECT images has high reproducibility and agreement among both nuclear cardiologists and cardiology trainees.

Validity and reproducibility of a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire for estimating calcium intake in Belgian preschool children.

Relative validity and reproducibility of a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for measuring preschool children's usual Ca intake were assessed using parents or guardians as a proxy. Estimated diet records (EDR; 3 d) were used as the reference method and reproducibility was measured by repeated FFQ administrations 5 weeks apart. From 2095 preschool children (2.5-6.5 years) randomly selected in Flanders (Flemish region of Belgium), 1052 returned a FFQ and EDR. Stringent exclusion procedures reduced the sample for validity analyses to 509 children. From a separate sample of 244 preschool children, 124 returned two FFQ, of whom sixty were included in the reproducibility analysis. Mean Ca intakes were 838 (sd 305) and 777 (sd 296) mg/d for EDR and FFQ respectively, indicating a mean difference of 60.9 (sd 294.4) mg/d (P<0.001). Pearson's correlation was 0.52. Cross-classification analysis of the FFQ and EDR classified 83 % of the subjects in the same or adjacent category and 2.4 % in extreme quartiles. Actual values for surrogate FFQ quartiles showed a progressive increase in Ca intake (P<0.001). The FFQ correctly identified 77 % of the children consuming less Ca than the age-specific RDA (800 mg/d). Correlation between repeated administrations was 0.79. No significant difference between mean Ca intakes was established by two administrations (23.8 (sd 161.2) mg/d). Cross-classification of repeated administrations classified 93.4 % of the subjects in the same or adjacent category and no subjects in extreme categories. This FFQ tended to underestimate preschool children's Ca intake when administered by a proxy. However, it demonstrated good repeatability and fairly good ability to classify subjects into extremes of Ca intake.

Reproducibility and validity of a quantitative food-frequency questionnaire among Jamaicans of African origin.

BACKGROUND: An interviewer-administered quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was developed to determine the energy and nutrient intakes of adult Jamaicans of African origin as part of a study of the epidemiology of diabetes and hypertension. METHODS: Reproducibility of the questionnaire was investigated in 123 participants aged 25-74 years. The relative validity of the FFQ was assessed against twelve 24-hour recalls administered over 12 months in 73 of the participants. In addition, energy intakes (EI) were compared with estimated basal metabolic rates (BMR). RESULTS: Reproducibility correlation coefficients (Pearson and intraclass) varied between 0.42 for retinol and 0.71 for carbohydrate, with most values falling between 0.50 and 0.60. When compared with repeated 24-hour recalls, the FFQ estimated slightly higher energy (mean 6%) and macronutrient intakes (mean 2-14%), and was within 5% when expressed as a percentage of energy intake. Micronutrients were higher by 1.19 (calcium) to 1.61 times (vitamin C). Unadjusted correlations between the FFQ and the reference method ranged from 0.20 for beta-carotene to 0.86 for alcohol. Cross-classification of nutrients into quartiles showed that 46-48% of participants in the lowest and highest quartiles were jointly classified by both methods. Misclassifications were low for most nutrients with one or two persons misclassified at the extreme quartiles. EI/BMR ratios suggested light to moderate activity levels appropriate for an urban population in a developing country. CONCLUSIONS: The FFQ showed reasonable reproducibility and validity and is suitable for estimating the habitual intakes of energy and macronutrients, but was poor for some micronutrients (retinol and beta-carotene).

Validity and reproducibility of two semi-quantitative alcohol frequency questionnaires for the Colombian population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative validity and reproducibility of two alcohol intake frequency questionnaires (AFQ-A; AFQ-B), designed to classify subjects according to their alcohol intake level, in Bucaramanga, Colombia. METHOD: One hundred and nine randomly selected subjects, aged between 20 and 60 years, completed three 30-day semi-quantitative alcohol intake records (30-DR). The AFQs were applied three months after the last 30-DR. AFQ-A contained 53 items; AFQ-B contained five items, with the alcoholic drinks for AFQ-B selected by Max_r. The correlation and agreement between alcohol intake assessed with the AFQs and the 30-DR were obtained using Pearson's correlation coefficient (r), Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (rhoC), Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (rS), Bland and Altman's limits of agreement (LOA) and Cohen's weighted kappa statistic (Kw). RESULTS: The reproducibility of the 30-DR was poor; rS ranged from 0.33 to 0.41. The reproducibility of the AFQs was higher, with rS between 0.50 and 0.73. The agreement (Kw) of the 30-DR and the AFQs was 0.40. The lower and upper LOA were between -56.4% and -11.0%. The AFQs and 30-DR were well correlated. Assessment of relative validity between the two methods yielded r values for alcohol between 0.52 and 0.60, which reduced to 0.20-0.29 after energy adjustment. CONCLUSIONS: These AFQs may be useful to rank subjects according to their alcohol intake. The AFQ-B is easy and quick to apply, and is also highly cost-effective.

Patch testing of nickel sulfate and potassium dichromate with a standardized ready-to-use test system gives highly reproducible results: a double-blind multicentre study.

There is still some doubt about the reproducibility of patch tests. A sound assessment needs optimized and unbiased studies. This study analysed the results of a double-blind multicentre study with nickel sulfate and potassium dichromate patch tests attached synchronously to both sides of the back of patients with a history of nickel allergy, conducted with a highly standardized randomized test system (TRUE-test). Out of 589 patients tested, a total of 388 had responded with allergic reactions to nickel sulfate and 130 to potassium dichromate. The reproducibility of positive nickel (dichromate) patch tests was 99.2% (90.8%). The reaction index was also calculated, which relates the number of allergic reactions obtained with a test preparation to the number of questionable and irritant reactions; the reaction index can range from -1 (questionable and irritant reactions only occur) to 1 (allergic reactions only occur). For nickel sulfate the reaction index was 0.91, but it was only 0.23 for potassium dichromate, as a result of considerably more questionable reactions. In conclusion, a highly synchronous reproducibility of results can be achieved by using a well-standardized patch-test system, especially with nickel sulfate. However, distinct allergens and test systems need to be evaluated separately.

Atopy patch tests in young adult patients with atopic dermatitis and controls: dose-response relationship, objective reading, reproducibility and clinical interpretation.

The clinical interpretation and reproducibility of atopy patch tests was studied in 23 selected young adult patients with atopic dermatitis and 25 healthy controls using standard inhalant allergens. Non-invasive measurements were used for objective assessment of test reactions and the participants were retested after 6 weeks. Ten of 19 (53%) evaluable patients with atopic dermatitis had at least one positive atopy patch test. However, there was no clear clinical relevance of the atopy patch test results when related to patient history and distribution of dermatitis. Reproducible and dose-dependent results were obtained with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, grass and cat with a reproducibility rate of 0.69 to 0.81 in patients and 0.60-0.96 in controls. A unique finding was a significant positive correlation between a positive atopy patch test, allergen dose and increase in transepidermal water loss and erythema, while measurement of capacitance did not distinguish between positive and negative reactions. The results of the present study do not support the routine use of atopy patch tests in the evaluation of adult patients with atopic dermatitis.

Validity of a population-based cancer register in Sweden--an assessment of data reproducibility in the South-East Region Prostate Cancer Register.

BACKGROUND: With a population-based setting, high coverage and accurately recorded data, the validity of a register is guaranteed. The South-East Region Prostate Cancer relies on the National Cancer Register as a basic source of data, thereby ensuring a high coverage of the corresponding geographic area. To assess the reproducibility of the data recorded a random sample of the cases were reviewed a second time and compared to the original recording. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The South-East Region Prostate Cancer Register was started in 1987. In addition to the basic data acquired from the Swedish National Register, it also includes tumour stage, grade, treatment and, since 1992, PSA. In the first stage of quality assessment 10 cases for each of the years 1987-1996 from Linköping University Hospital were randomly selected for two independent recodings according to the same protocol as the original registration. In the second step 10 cases each for the same years from the remaining 8 hospitals in the region were selected for a single recoding. RESULTS: No systematic deviations were seen between the two independent recodings from Linköping, a single recoding was therefore considered sufficient for assessing the reproducibility of the data from the remaining hospitals in the region. The Kappa values for agreement between the original registration and the single recoding ranged from 0.589 to 0.869. CONCLUSION: The population-based setting and high coverage guarantees the external validity of the register. The internal validity is ensured by the high reproducibility shown in the present study.

Durations of extended mental rehearsals are remarkably reproducible in higher level human performances.

It has been extremely difficult to quantify temporal aspects of higher level human brain function. We have found that mental rehearsals of musical performance of several minutes duration provide such a measure in that they can be highly reproducible, varying to less than 1%. These remarkable results pose fundamental neurophysiological problems. It is necessary to understand the underlying neuronal bases for this accuracy in the spatial-temporal activity of billions of neurons over minutes without sensory input. Further, they present a powerful constraint on neuronal models of brain function. Such highly reproducible (in duration) mental rehearsals might be used in conjunction with multielectrode EEG recordings to look for reproducible spatial-temporal patterns. Further, we suggest that our results may provide an extremely useful behavioural correlate for high level performance.

Reproducibility of food intake in a food frequency questionnaire used in a general population.

This study evaluates the reproducibility of food intake reports in a 45-item self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) used for a diet study in a large cohort in New York State. The first FFQ was mailed in 1980, and a followup version containing 75 food items was mailed in 1988 to the eligible original participants. Reproducibility was evaluated by comparing the subjects' 1988 responses with their original 1980 responses. Spearman's correlations ranged from 0.27 (nuts other than peanuts) to 0.56 (summer squash) in men and from 0.25 (tomatoes) to 0.51 (summer squash) in women. Analyses stratified by age, education, marital status, body mass index, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and special diet revealed few substantial differences in correlations. The moderate reproducibility of foods in this questionnaire indicates that brief FFQs may be a useful tool to study food intake and chronic disease relationships in this population.

The effect of experiential anchoring on the reproducibility of exercise regulation in adolescent children.

In this study, we examined whether a preparatory perceptual 'anchoring' technique would enhance the reproducibility (test-retest reliability) of adolescent children in their ability to self-regulate their exercise output on the basis of their effort perceptions. Forty-one adolescents aged 12.6 +/- 0.7 years (mean +/- s), randomly assigned to either an anchor or non-anchor group, undertook two identical production trials (three 3-min cycle ergometer bouts at levels 3, 6 and 8 of the Children's Effort Rating Table) over 8 days. Before each trial, the anchor group received an experiential (exercise) trial intended to provide a frame of reference for their perceived exertions. The test-retest reproducibility of the heart rates and power outputs produced during the production trials was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients and 95% limits of agreement analysis. For the anchor group, the intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.68 to 0.81 for heart rate and from 0.39 to 0.86 for power output. For the non-anchor group, they were generally higher: 0.86 to 0.93 and 0.81 to 0.95 for heart rate and power output, respectively. The 95% limits of agreement indicated no marked differences between the two groups in the amount of bias and within-subject error. The results suggest that among these adolescents, the implementation of an experiential anchoring protocol had no positive effect on the reproducibility of their exercise regulation during prescribed cycling.

Short-term reproducibility of computed tomography-based lung density measurements in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and smokers with emphysema.

PURPOSE: To study the short-term reproducibility of lung density measurements by multi-slice computed tomography (CT) using three different radiation doses and three reconstruction algorithms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients with smoker's emphysema and 25 patients with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency underwent 3 scans at 2-week intervals. Low-dose protocol was applied, and images were reconstructed with bone, detail, and soft algorithms. Total lung volume (TLV), 15th percentile density (PD-15), and relative area at -910 Hounsfield units (RA-910) were obtained from the images using Pulmo-CMS software. Reproducibility of PD-15 and RA-910 and the influence of radiation dose, reconstruction algorithm, and type of emphysema were then analysed. RESULTS: The overall coefficient of variation of volume adjusted PD-15 for all combinations of radiation dose and reconstruction algorithm was 3.7%. The overall standard deviation of volume-adjusted RA-910 was 1.7% (corresponding to a coefficient of variation of 6.8%). Radiation dose, reconstruction algorithm, and type of emphysema had no significant influence on the reproducibility of PD-15 and RA-910. However, bone algorithm and very low radiation dose result in overestimation of the extent of emphysema. CONCLUSION: Lung density measurement by CT is a sensitive marker for quantitating both subtypes of emphysema. A CT-protocol with radiation dose down to 16 mAs and soft or detail reconstruction algorithm is recommended.

Computed tomography of the human pineal gland for study of the sleep-wake rhythm: reproducibility of a semi-quantitative approach.

PURPOSE: To propose a semi-quantitative computed tomography (CT) protocol for determining uncalcified pineal tissue (UCPT), and to evaluate its reproducibility in modification of studies showing that the degree of calcification is a potential marker of deficient melatonin production and may prove an instability marker of circadian rhythm. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two pineal gland autopsy specimens were scanned in a skull phantom with different slice thickness twice and the uncalcified tissue visually assessed using a four-point scale. The maximum gland density was measured and its inverse graded on a non-linear four-point scale. The sum of both scores was multiplied by the gland volume to yield the UCPT. The within-subject variance of UCPT was determined and compared between scans of different slice thickness. RESULTS: The UCPT of the first measurement, in arbitrary units, was 39+/-52.5 for 1 mm slice thickness, 44+/-51.1 for 2 mm, 45+/-34.8 for 4 mm, and 84+/-58.0 for 8 mm. Significant differences of within-subject variance of UCPT were found between 1 and 4 mm, 1 and 8 mm, and 2 and 8 mm slice thicknesses (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: A superior reproducibility of the semi-quantitative CT determination of UCPT was found using 1 and 2 mm slice thicknesses. These data support the use of thin slices of 1 and 2 mm. The benefit in reproducibility from thin slices has to be carefully weighted against their considerably higher radiation exposure.

Reproducibility of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging measurements of tendon size.

PURPOSE: To investigate the intra- and inter-tester reproducibility of measurements of the Achilles tendon, tibialis anterior tendon, and the tibialis posterior tendon in football players using ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eleven asymptomatic football players were examined. Using a standardized US scanning protocol, the tendons were examined by two observers with US for thickness, width, and cross-sectional area. One observer conducted the procedure twice. The subjects also underwent an MRI examination, and the assessment of tendon size was conducted twice by two observers. RESULTS: The best reproducibility judged by coefficient of variation (CV) and 95% confidence interval was determined for the Achilles tendon on both US and MRI. The variability of US on measurements on the tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior tendons was less than that when using MRI. In 12 out of 18 measurements, there were systematic differences between observers as judged by one-sided F-test. CONCLUSION: The reproducibility of the three tendons was limited. Precaution should be taken when looking for minor quantitative changes, i.e., training-induced hypertrophy, and when doing so, the Achilles tendon should be used.

Histologic grading in breast cancer--reproducibility between seven pathologic departments. South Sweden Breast Cancer Group.

Histologic grade, including tubular formations, nuclear grade, and mitotic activity, is a well-documented prognostic factor in breast cancer. In comparison with other prognostic parameters, the evaluation of histologic grade is cheap and can be performed, in principle, in all cases of breast cancer. One possible disadvantage is that the evaluation may vary between different pathological departments. The aim of the present work was therefore to study the reproducibility of the histologic grading system by distributing haematoxylin-erythrosin-stained slides from 93 invasive breast cancers to the seven pathology departments within the southern healthcare region of Sweden. The evaluation was performed blindly and without any knowledge of other clinical parameters. In 31% of the cases the same histologic grade was obtained for all departments. The overall mean kappa was 0.54, indicating a moderate reproducibility. Of the three factors included in histologic grade, the agreement was best for tubular formations and poorest for nuclear grade and mitotic activity. The overall moderate reproducibility should be considered when the clinical usefulness of histologic grading is compared with other prognostic instruments.

Reproducibility and validity of a food frequency questionnaire among Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the reproducibility and validity of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) among individuals living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. METHODS: A total of 116 food items in our FFQ were selected by ranking food items according to their contribution to the population intake of nutrients, based on multiple 24-hour recalls (24HRs) from 144 participants in July 2001. The FFQ was validated by using three 24HRs for 118 men and women in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in August 2002. The reproducibility of the FFQ was assessed by repeated administration at 7 +/- 3.4 days. RESULTS: The reproducibility study showed that Spearman correlation coefficients, adjusted for energy intake, ranged from 0.47 to 0.72, and that weighted kappa values ranged from 0.42 for lipid to 0.65 for potassium. In the validation study, correlation coefficients, adjusted for energy intake, between the FFQ and the 24HRs ranged from 0.16 (calcium) to 0.45 (retinol). The proportion of subjects classified by the FFQ into the same third as determined by the 24HRs was between 42% and 62%. CONCLUSIONS: This food frequency questionnaire measured the usual intake of major nutrients for Vietnamese adults living in Ho Chi Minh City and its urban area, where dietary patterns are similar to those of the Vietnamese population.

High prevalence of retinal vascular changes in never-treated essential hypertensives: an inter- and intra-observer reproducibility study with non-mydriatic retinography.

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of stratifying cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients on the basis of retinal changes such as arteriolar narrowing or arterio-venous crossing has been criticized. AIM: Objectives of the study were: (i) to compare the prevalence of retinal abnormalities detected by non-mydriatic retinography with that of other quantitative markers of target organ damage (TOD), such as echocardiographically determined left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), carotid structural abnormalities and microalbuminuria in recently diagnosed and never treated hypertensives; (ii) to assess the inter- and intra-observer reproducibility in evaluating retinal microvascular changes. METHODS: One hundred ninety-seven grade 1 (73%) and grade 2 essential hypertensives (119 males; mean age 46.8 +/- 12.0 years, duration of hypertension: 2.3 +/- 1.8 years) referred for the first time to our outpatient hypertension hospital clinic were subjected to the following procedures: (i) repeated clinic blood pressure (BP) measurements; (ii) electrocardiogram; (iii) routine blood chemistry and urinalysis; (iv) 24-h urine collection for microalbuminuria; (v) 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring; (vi) non-mydriatic retinography; (vii) echocardiogram; (viii) carotid ultrasonography. Retinal changes were evaluated according to a modified Keith, Wagener and Barker (KWB) classification by two physicians, who had no knowledge of the patients' characteristics. These following markers of TOD were considered: (i) left ventricular mass index > or = 125 g/m2 in men and > or = 110 g/m2 in women; (ii) at least one carotid plaque (focal thickening > 1.3 mm) or diffuse common carotid thickening (> or = 0.9 mm); (iii) microalbuminuria (urinary albumin excretion > or = 30 and < 300 mg/24 h). RESULTS: The prevalence rates of LVH, carotid structural alterations and microalbuminuria were 12.9, 26.0 and 8.6% respectively; while the distribution of patients in the different degrees of hypertensive retinopathy made by two independent readers (1 and 2) was: 0 = 15.2, I = 25.4, II = 58.9, III = 0.5% (1); 0 = 14.7, I = 27.9, II = 56.8, III = 0.5% (2), p = NS. The overall prevalence of retinal changes was 84.3% and 84.7%, respectively, and the inter- and intra-observer reproducibility 89.1, 91.6 (1) and 90.2% (2), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that: (i) the prevalence of initial retinal changes is far higher than that of other prognostically validated quantitative markers of cardiac and extracardiac TOD; (ii) the inter- and intra-observer reproducibility between two skilled readers in detecting these abnormalities with non-mydriatic retinography is excellent; (iii) the high prevalence of retinal changes in untreated subjects with mild hypertension offers a new piece of evidence that they cannot be considered a proof of TOD.

Reproducibility of bacterial and copepod density assessment in bathing and artisanal fishing water of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Faecal bacteriological indicators and copepod density assessment are used to predict the environmental health of seawater for recreational bathing and artisanal fishing, respectively. The reproducibility of bacterial culture-count and copepod-microscopic density assessment after respective capturing of the sampled seawater on 0.22 microm Millipore filter and 150 microm mesh sieve copepod net, is determined. The paired t-test was performed to evaluate the reproducibility of each obtained parameter-mean in first and second simultaneous water samplings of a total of 10 sites selected along a 200 km distance, at about 500-1000 m offshore. The means of each bacterial indicator in colony forming units/100 ml of sea water in first versus (vs.) second sampling of the 10 sites, followed by the P values were: total bacterial count (6.3 x 10(2) vs. 6.2 x 10(2), P=0.958), Coliform count (3.9 x 10(2) vs. 2.6 x 10(2), P=0.212), Staphylococcus aureus (3.0 x 10(2) vs. 2.4 x 10(2), P=0.551), and Clostridium perfringens (1.4 x 10 vs. 0.4 x 10, P=0.298). However, the average copepod density in five microscopic fields at magnification of 100x in sample 1 vs. sample 2 were: (1.40 vs. 1.60 respectively, P=0.267). This sampling design along the 200 km coast, the used technique for capturing the indicators, and the quantitative laboratory assessment of the indicator densities resulted in high reproducibility with a non-significant difference between the first and second sampling within the 95% confidence limits (P>0.05), a data in support of future monitoring protocol of the environmental health of the coastal water of the Mediterranean sea.
