Effect of positional loading of three removable partial denture clasp assemblies on movement of abutment teeth.

Tests demonstrated that the degree of movement of the abutment tooth for a distal-extension base using three different clasp designs was a function of the location of loading. Thus, the null hypothesis, there is no significant difference in the degree of movement of the abutment tooth around the axis of rotation as a function of the position of loading, has been demonstrated to be invalid based on the data obtained in this investigation.

The effect of the resilient-layer distal-extension partial denture on movement of the abutment teeth: a new methodology.

The new methodology presented in this article is simple, reliable, and accurate. The testing casts represented a reasonable simulation of human dentition. The artificial mouth reproduced major mandibular movement in a physiologic manner and applied controlled load instead of static load. The abutment movement sensor and the strain-gauge configurations suggested showed a higher level of sensitivity, accuracy, and reproducibility. This method was intended to be used for in vitro studies of RPD designs. It allowed recording of occlusal forces around the abutment tooth in the three axes of motion simultaneously.

Fixed partial dentures supported by periodontally compromised teeth.

This study tested the effect of fixed partial dentures on hypermobile abutment teeth with substantially reduced levels of periodontal attachment. One abutment tooth and one control (nonabutment) tooth of the same type and periodontal condition were selected for study in adults. Treatment consisted of periodontal therapy and a 3- or 4-unit fixed partial denture, after which all subjects were placed on a quarterly maintenance schedule. No differences were found between the mean baseline and 24-month measures for all dependent variables at test or control sites.

Transitional use of a tube/sleeve dowel on endodontically treated canines.

This technique affords a simplified alternative to more complicated and expensive treatment of periodontically compromised teeth. It provides the patient with an extended-term prosthesis attached to a single or multiple retained canine. A disadvantage of this technique is that poor hygiene may result in caries or further periodontal breakdown. The internal liner of the cemented tube/sleeve will accumulate food particles if the patient does not keep the prosthesis in place during all times of food ingestion and does not periodically irrigate the internal tube/sleeve.

A randomized clinical trial of two basic removable partial denture designs. Part I: Comparisons of five-year success rates and periodontal health.

A randomized clinical trial was undertaken to compare the effectiveness of two partial denture designs, one with I-bar (bar) and the other with circumferential retainers (circumferential), in 134 patients with Kennedy class I and class II edentulous conditions. A total of 30 partial dentures were considered failures, five because of abutment failures and 25 because of the lack of removable partial denture use for eating. The 5-year success rate of 71.3% for the circumferential design did not differ significantly from the 76.6% for the bar design (p > 0.05). There were no discernible changes in the nine periodontal health components of abutment teeth with either of the two designs after 60 months. The results indicate that the two designs do not differ significantly in terms of success rates, maintenance care, and effects on abutment teeth. A well-constructed removable partial denture of either design, supported by favorable abutments and accompanied by a regular recall program offers a satisfactory treatment modality.
