Functional visual problems: training home care aides to identify early signs.

Home care aids are a primary source of direct care to frail elders, for whom vision loss is a key factor in their declining health. Together, a vision rehabilitation service and a home care aid service agency developed a training program to increase aides' awareness and sensitivity to the issues of visual impairment and to develop a referral system for appropriate eye care and vision rehabilitative services for their clients.

[Functional visual explorations of Bardet-Biedl syndrome. A study of three cases].

Laurence-Moon syndrome, which is very rare, and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, which is more frequent are now well-recognized as two distinct entities in pediatric neurology. Bardet-Biedl syndrome includes a number of common clinical signs it shares with Laurence-Moon syndrome but also with other syndromes, particularly Alströme syndrome. These signs are retinitis pigmentosa, mental retardation, obesity, and hypogonadism. Ophthalmological and electrophysiological examinations are essential for confirmation and correct diagnosis of Bardet-Biedl syndrome. We present three case histories. Our third case illustrates the possibility of below normal yet discernable electroretinogram amplitudes which do not infirm the diagnosis of Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

Effects of hyper +Gz acceleration on cardiovascular function, visual evoked potentials and cerebral blood flow in anesthetized rats.

Sustained hyper-gravity acceleration, particularly along the long axis of the body of animals or man (Gz), produces significant mal-effects on subjects, and hence it has been well studied, The most common syndromes of Gz application were cardio-vascular de-conditioning, and black-out, red-out, and loss of consciousness, which finally lead subjects into death. However, in most previous studies, the duration of applied Gz was rather short. In the present experiments, we can use longer duration of 1000 seconds. In addition, recent technological innovation make it possible to record directly local cerebral blood flow at a target cortical area with a Laser Doppler flow meter. We used this innovated method to measure local cerebral blood flow of rats in relation to visual evoked potentials (VEPs) under hyper-Gz acceleration. Also we recorded cardio-vascular parameters like heart rate from ECG, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and correlated them with cerebral blood flow and VEPs.

The efficacy of acetazolamide on visual functions in a patient with choroid metastasis of breast carcinoma.

Breast carcinoma is the most frequent cancer in women and is the second leading cause of death. Choroid metastasis of breast carcinoma can be found either at presentation or in remission. It is frequently encountered in disseminated breast cancer with multiple organ metastasis. It has been proposed that the oedema-reducing effect of acetazolamide is due to stimulated ion and fluid removal from the retina to the choroid. A 40-year-old female patient on adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer was found to have an isolated choroid metastasis. Clinical and radiological remission was achieved after orbital radiotherapy, chemotherapy and acetazolamide treatment. In this case report, we emphasise the possible beneficial effect of acetazolamide in patients with choroid metastasis.
