Switching between novel samarium(II)-mediated cyclizations by a simple change in alcohol cosolvent.

Gamma,delta-unsaturated ketones undergo two very different stereoselective cyclization reactions mediated by samarium(II) iodide depending upon the alcohol cosolvent used in the reaction. Switching between an unprecedented aldol spirocyclization and a novel cyclobutanol-forming process can be achieved simply by changing the alcohol cosolvent from methanol to tert-butyl alcohol. Unprecedented cyclizations of calix[4]arenes with glycols under the Mitsunobu protocol, part 2.(1) O,O-and O,S-bridged calixarenes.

[reaction: see text] Cycloalkylations of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (CA) and p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (TCA) with various aliphatic glycols were performed under the Mitsunobu protocol using the DEAD/TPP system. CA gave 1,3-dialkylated diols, while C(2)-C(10) glycols gave 1,2- and 1,3-bridged calixarenes. The reaction of TCA with C(2) diols afforded sulfonium phenoxide betaines via O,S-cyclization, which is the first example for the alkylation of the sulfide bridge.

Cyclization of oxa-bicyclic alkenes with beta-iodo-(Z)-propenoates and o-iodobenzoate catalyzed by nickel complexes: a simple efficient route to annulated coumarins.

In the presence of Ni(dppe)Br(2) and Zn powder in acetonitrile at 80 degrees C, oxa-bicyclic olefins undergo cyclization with o-iodobenzoate and with beta-iodo-(Z)-propenoates to give the benzocoumarin derivatives in moderate to good yields. This methodology offers a simple efficient way for the synthesis of structurally complicate coumarins in one pot. [reaction: see text]

Oxidative cyclization of beta-hydroxyenones with palladium(II): a novel entry to 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-ones.

[reaction: see text] A palladium(II)-mediated oxidative cyclization was found to be effective for the preparation of structurally diverse 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-ones from the corresponding beta-hydroxyenones. Attractive features of this transformation include the ready availability of the starting enones, the regiocontrol, and the easy access of enantiopure 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-one from the corresponding enantiopure enone.

Stereoselective aldol-type cyclization reaction mediated by dibutylboron triflate/diisopropylethylamine.

[reaction: see text] Dibutylboron triflate/diisopropylethylamine mediated aldol-type cyclization provides an expedient route for the stereoselective synthesis of cyclic ethers in a single step. The method is highly efficient for the stereoselective synthesis of 4-cis-tetrahydropyranones. The reaction is proposed to proceed via an S(N)1-type mechanism through a chair-like transition state, in which both substituents occupy equatorial positions.

Efficient oxidative radical cyclizations of ester enolates with carbocation desilylation as termination: synthesis of cyclopentanoid monoterpenes and analogues.

[reaction: see text] An efficient oxidative radical cyclization approach for the synthesis of 2-alkenyl cyclopentane or cyclohexane carboxylates from omega-silylallyl ester enolates induced by recyclable SET oxidant ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate has been developed. A new tandem alkoxycarbonylation/oxidative radical cyclization/cationic termination process forms the basis for a five-step synthesis of the cyclopentanoid monoterpene dihydronepetalactone and analogues.

Stereoselective formation of tri- and tetracycles by samarium diiodide-induced cyclizations of naphthyl-substituted ketones.

[reaction: see text] Samarium diiodide promotes smooth reductive cyclizations of gamma-naphthyl-substituted ketones to afford tri- and tetracyclic compounds in high yields and with excellent stereoselectivities. Cyclic ketones furnish steroid-like compounds with "unnatural" cis/cis annulation of rings B/C/D. The remaining styrene-type double bond of ring B allows further stereoselective reactions. Cases with matched and mismatched relative configuration could be identified leading to dramatic differences in the ring closure ability.

Oxidation of p-aminophenols and formal radical cyclization onto benzene rings: formation of benzo-fused nitrogen heterocycles.

p-Iodophenol and its O-MOM-protected ether can be converted into iodoamines 2. These give cross-conjugated ketones 3 on oxidation with hypervalent iodides in the presence of methanol, and the ketones undergo radical cyclization. Exposure of the products to acid or sequential treatment with a Grignard reagent and acid effects rearomatization to produce benzo-fused nitrogen heterocycles 4.

Racemic but tropos (chirally flexible) BIPHEP ligands for Rh(I)-complexes: highly enantioselective ene-type cyclization of 1,6-enynes.

[reaction: see text] The tropos (chirally flexible) or atropos (chirally rigid) nature of BIPHEP-Rh complexes at room temperature critically depends on the amines complexed. The aliphatic DPEN complex is atropos, whereas the aromatic DABN complex is tropos. BIPHEP-Rh chirality can thus be controlled by DABN at room temperature. The amine-free BIPHEP-Rh complex is tropos. At 5 degrees C, even amine-free BIPHEP-Rh complexes are atropos and hence can be used as enantiopure catalysts to give high enantioselectivity in ene-type cyclization of 1,6-enynes.

General silaindene synthesis based on intramolecular reductive cyclization toward new fluorescent silicon-containing pi-electron materials.

[reaction: see text] The reaction of (o-silylphenyl)acetylene derivatives with lithium naphthalenide undergoes intramolecular reductive cyclization to produce various silaindene derivatives. On the basis of this methodology, a series of silaindene-containing pi-electron systems are synthesized that show intense blue to greenish-blue fluorescence.

Nitrile anion cyclization with epoxysilanes followed by brook rearrangement/ring opening of cyclopropane nitriles/alkylation.

The reaction of delta-silyl-gamma,delta-epoxypentanenitrile derivatives with a base and an alkylating agent affords delta-siloxy-gamma,delta-unsaturated pentanenitrile derivatives via a tandem process that involves the formation of the cyclopropane derivative by epoxy nitrile cyclization followed by Brook rearrangement and an anion-induced cleavage of the cyclopropane ring.
