[The fluorescence emission of water at upconversion of frequency by laser induced fluorescence].

The fluorescence spectra of several types of water samples in combination with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements using 532 nm wavelength excitation source were measured in the laboratory, and the fluorescence matters such as dissolved organic matter (DOM), chlorophyll a (Chl a) and carotenoids were pointed out with spectral fluorescent signature (SFS) technique. It is considered that the peak at 455 nm in the spectrum is contributed by carotenoid (PPC). Finally, the dynamic model of PPC's fluorescence emission is showed.

[An in vitro study on the incidence of the second mesiobuccal canal in the mesiobuccal root of the first and second maxillary molars].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of the second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary first and second molars in Chinese population using three techniques, including the clearing technique, spiral CT scanning and serial root sections. METHODS: A total of 216 extracted human first and 334 second maxillary molars were randomly divided into two groups respectively: group A and B. The teeth in group A were cleared. The specimens in group B were subjected to spiral CT scanning, and then the roots were cross-sectioned every 1 mm from the root apex. Under the Dental operating microscope (DOM), the incidence of MB2 were recorded. RESULTS: (1) The incidence of MB2 in the first and the second maxillary molars were 81.48% and 49.70% respectively by clearing, and 77.78% and 47.31% from S-CT scanning, 88.89% and 53.89% respectively from serial root section. The occurrence of MB2 in maxillary first molars was statistically higher than in maxillary second molars (P < 0.05, chi square test). (2) There was no significant difference among the three approaches for detecting the MB2 canal (P > 0.05, chi square test). CONCLUSIONS: Both the maxillary first molars and the second molars have high incidence of MB2.

[Effects of phosphate therapy on parathyroid gland reactivity].

The effects of a single oral dose of phosphate (780 mg of elemental phosphorus as 100 drops of Phosphoneurol 120 from DOMS-Adrian Laboratories) on parathyroid function and on calcium and phosphate metabolism were studied in 10 young adults. The parathyroid response was checked by measurement of PTH 1-84 and of nephrogenous cAMP before and after a 10 days therapy by phosphate (780 mg of elemental phosphorus twice daily). Before treatment a 16 per cent increase in PTH 1-84 (p less than 0.05) and a 34 per cent increase in nephrogenous cAMP (p less than 0.02) was obtained. After treatment the increases were respectively 34 per cent for PTH 1-84 (p less than 0.001) and 67 per cent for nephrogenous cAMP (p less than 0.001). The responses in PTH 1-84 and in nephrogenous cAMP were significantly (p less than 0.05 and p less than 0.01) higher after than before treatment by phosphate.

The life cycle of Echinostoma bolschewense (Kotova, 1939) (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae).

The life cycle of E. bolschewense, the species with 37 collar spines and closely related to E. revolutum, was experimentally studied. The following developmental stages are described: mother and daughter rediae, cercaria, metacercaria, and adult. The freshwater prosobranchiate snail Viviparus contectus was found to be the first intermediate host in nature. Under experimental conditions, the miracidia developed in V. contectus. They did not, however, penetrate into Bithynia tentaculata or into any of the pulmonate snails tested. The cercariae encysted in various Prosobranchia and Pulmonata. Adult worms were commonly obtained from hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) and only exceptionally from chickens (Gallus gallus f. dom.). The species studied is considered to be conspecific with Cercaria bolschewensis described by Kotova (1939).

Abdominal fat predominance in women is associated with a decreased prevalence of the high risk P2, DY mammographic breast patterns.

Body fat distribution was studied in relation to mammographic breast morphology in a cross-sectional sample of 583 women aged 41-75 years participating in the DOM project, a regional breast cancer detection project in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The waist/hip ratio (WHR) was used as an indicator of body fat topography. Mammographic breast morphology was categorized according to the parenchymal breast patterns (N1, P1, P2, DY) as defined by Wolfe. Multivariate associations between the waist/hip ratio, Quetelet's index, age and parity and mammographic parenchymal patterns were tested by multiple linear logistic regression. Independently of age, parity and the degree of obesity, women with a high WHR ratio, i.e. with a predominant fat accumulation in the abdominal region, were significantly less likely to have the high risk P2, DY mammographic parenchymal pattern than women with a low WHR, i.e. with a preferential gluteal-femoral fat accumulation.

Hostile personality characteristics of duodenal ulcer patients.

The aggression profile of patients with Duodenal Peptic Ulcer (DPU) (n = 39) was assessed by means of five self-rating scales (FAF 1, FAF 3, PDS-Extp, PDS-Intp, PDS-Dom) and was compared with a matched normal control group (n = 39) and a psychiatric outpatient sample (n = 67). The DPU group scored significantly higher than normal controls on aggressive excitability and extrapunitiveness (trend in the same direction for potential aggressions), and significantly lower than the psychiatric group on potential aggressions and intropunitiveness. Contrary to expectations, DPU patients did not differ from the other groups on dominance; in this dimension, however, the psychiatric group scored significantly lower than normals. The findings are discussed in the context of the available literature and it is suggested that intropunitiveness is drained off by the somatic symptom (DPU).

The pattern of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor binding in the avian forebrain.

In autoradiographs of cryostat sections through the forebrains of domestic geese (Anser anser f. dom.) the distribution of muscarinic ACh-receptors was studied. A regionally varied receptor density is described and compared to histological subdivisions. Possible correlations of receptor pattern and functional systems are discussed.

Ultrastructure of brain and retina in Kufs' disease (adult type-ceroid-lipofuscinosis).

A patient with Kufs' disease (adult type-neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis) is reported. He was the brother of the index case reported by Dom et al. [1979]. The diagnosis had been made by skin and skeletal muscle biopsies. The postmortem study of the brain confirmed the diagnosis and revealed a diffuse intraneuronal storage of membrane-bound inclusions with curvilinear, rectilinear and fingerprint profiles. Neurons from the frontal grey matter, the thalamic nuclei, the cerebellar cortex, the dentate nucleus, the substantia nigra and the anterior horns contained such inclusions, as demonstrated by electron microscopy. Because some light microscopic changes had been described in the retina of the brother, a complete ultrastructural examination of the eye was carried out in our patient. Except for signs of storage in the oculomotor muscles and in the smooth muscle cells of the ciliary body, the only ocular signs of storage were found in the retinal ganglion cells. Some of the latter contained inclusions which were quite analogous to the ones found in the neurons of the central nervous system. The pigmented epithelium, the photoreceptors and all the other retinal layers were normal. It is necessary to perform neurophysiological and electron microscopic studies at the retinal level to help clarify the confusion between the protracted and adult types of ceroid-lipofuscinosis since they may chronologically overlap.

[Relation of visual evoked potentials to the integral characteristics of cognitive activity in 8- to 9-year-old children].

Amplitude and temporal parameters of evoked potentials (EPs) in response to a checkerboard pattern, picture of a house, the Russian word "dom", meaning house, combination of letters "DMO" and a number of other stimuli, correlated with indices of the verbal, nonverbal, and general intelligence as well as with those of the cognitive style "field dependence-independence". Maximum number of statistically significant correlations was found in the course of comparison of integrative cognitive characteristics and parameters of EPs to stimuli with increased semantic complexity. No interhemispheric differences were found in the character of interrelations between cognitive characteristics and parameters of EPs to verbal and spatially structured stimuli.

[Physicochemical and pharmacokinetic research on Pharmachim's thiabendazole].

Studied was the preparation thiabendazole-Pharmachim (TBZ-Ph), produced by the Economic Corporation "Pharmachim". In some of the experiments TBZ-Ph was comparatively studied with the Merck & Sharp and Dom preparation (TBZ-MShD), Switzerland. It was found that the light absorption maximum of TBZ-Ph was at 302 nm. Thermostability studies revealed that the preparation was comparatively stable in the course of 6 months at room temperature and at 4 degrees and 40 degrees C. When stored in the form of 1 per cent medicated feed at room t degrees, 4 degrees, and 40 degrees C it showed no deviations as against the check samples over a period of 70 days. TBZ-Ph was shown to possess slight photosensitivity; it was not hygroscopic. In oral administration to sheep and pigs at the rate of 100 mg per kg body mass, in the form of a 10 per cent water suspension TBZ-Ph was absorbed through the gastro-intestinal membrane. It was retained in the blood serum of sheep up to the 24th hour. The preparation was shown to gain access to almost all viscera and striated muscles, persisting in them for some twenty days. Following the oral application in a dose of 100 mg/kg it reached the mammary gland of lactating ewes and was detected in the milk in maximum concentrations as early as the 3rd hour (5.8 to 12.3 ppm); in the course of the following hours concentrations dropped, and in individual animals the preparation was traced up to the 96th hour.

Thalamic lesions in a patient with Menkes kinky-hair disease.

The thalamus in a patient with Menkes kinky-hair disease showed lesions involving the large association and specific sensory relay nuclei and sparing the nonspecific sensory relay nuclei. The results confirm the findings of Iwata et al. [1979] but add the notion of a relative sparing of the microneurons which represent 40-50% of the normal neuronal population in the medialis formation and 35-40% in the posterior formation [Dom 1976]. Although axonal and/or cortical neuronal damage has contributed some retrograde lesions, a primary thalamic degeneration probably represents the most important pathogenetic factor. Whether this degeneration results specifically from the deficiency of enzymes operative in copper metabolism in some thalamic nuclei only remains purely speculative. Its clinical significance within the syndrome dominated by a severe psychomotor retardation cannot be evaluated.

[Distribution of cestodes among domestic ducks and free-living aquatic birds].

In 1959-1975, 3404 water birds of 18 species belonging to six orders were examined for the presence of cestodes. The birds came from 52 localities (ponds) in Bohemia and Moravia where domestic ducks were kept by the State Fishery and where also wild water fowl occurred. Cestodes of 31 species of the families Hymenolepididae, Dilepididae, Amabiliidae and Diploposthidae were found. The total number of examined birds included 2476 domestic ducks (1406 of them, i. e. 56.8%, were positive for cestodes) and 928 free-living water birds (873 of them, i. e. 94.1%, were 30 cestode species. Eight free-living bird species of the orders Anseriformes and Ralliformes (Anas platyrhynchos, Aythya ferina, A. fuligula, Fulica atra, Aythya nyroca, Anas crecca, A. querquedula and A. strepera) are significant for the circulation of cestodes as they harbour 16 cestode species also occurring in Anas platyrhynchos dom.

Differential effects of hallucinogenic drugs on the activity of serotonin-containing neurons in the nucleus centralis superior and nucleus raphe pallidus in freely moving cats.

Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that there are a number of important dissociations between the effects of hallucinogenic drugs on the activity of serotonin-containing dorsal raphe neurons and behavior in freely moving cats. In the present study, we extended this analysis to serotonergic units in the nucleus centralis superior (NCS) and nucleus raphe pallidus (RPA). Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) produced a dose-dependent decrease in NCS unit activity at 10, 50 and 100 micrograms/kg (i.p.) and a dose-dependent increase in certain behaviors (e.g., limb flicking and abortive grooming) and the peak behavioral and unit changes were temporally correlated. By contrast, LSD had little effect on serotonin-containing RPA neurons. 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeODMT) also produced a dose-dependent decrease in NCS unit activity at 10, 50 and 250 micrograms/kg (i.m.) and dose-dependent behavioral changes. Similar to our LSD data, 5-MeODMT was found to have no overall significant effect on RPA unit activity, except at the highest dose level. Psilocin produced dose-dependent decreases in NCS unit activity at 25, 100 and 750 micrograms/kg (i.p.), whereas the behavioral changes were not dose-related. Psilocin also had relatively little effect on the activity of RPA neurons. The phenylethylamine hallucinogens, 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (50, 250 and 1000 micrograms/kg i.p.) (DOM) and mescaline (5000 micrograms/kg i.p.), both produced large behavioral changes, but no overall significant effect on raphe unit activity in either the NCS or RPA. These data suggest that ascending dorsal raphe and NCS neurons may be involved in the process of hallucinogenesis, whereas descending RPA neurons do not appear to be involved in this process.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Hassall's corpuscle: a regressive formation.

Alpha naphthylesterase and leucineaminopeptidase activities in Hassall's corpuscles in the Gallus dom, and Cavia cobaya were found to be similar to those in man and in other animals. Histochemical findings of the thymus during the course of the growing phase have shown that these two enzymes are closely connected with the initial formation of a Hassall's corpuscle. Some medullary parenchymal epitheliocytes react strongly at this time. At first present in small clusters, they gradually become more numerous and finally escape from the network. Next they tend to cluster together, enclosing other cells with them. This change is connected with a new structure acquired by the cells. Enzymatic activity, antigenic properties and immunological reactions are only present in the early growth stages of a Hassall's corpuscle, when the cells are often hypertrophic. The component parts of the lamellated corpuscle are subject to involutive phenomena; they cease to function and to supply structural material until they finally disappear. The thymus is able to provide formative material without having recourse to Hassall's corpuscle. However, we are inclined to consider the progressive phase of Hassall's corpuscle to be important, as then elements in growth are clearly differentiated.

[Tapeworm fauna of gallinaceans (Galliformes) of Vietnam].

131 specimens of 3 species of Galliformes from Vietnam were investigated (Gallus gallus dom., G. g. jaboruillei, Francolinus pintadeanus and Lophora nycthemerus). In them 9 species of cestodes were found as follows: Davainea proglottina (Davainea, 1860), Cotugnia digonopora (Pasquale, 1890), Raillietina tetragona (Molin, 1858), R. echinobothrida (Megnin, 1880), Skrjabinia cesticillus (Molin, 1858), Paroniella tinguiana Tubangui et Masilungan, 1937, Amoebotaenia cuneata (Linstow, 1872), Echinolepis carioca (Magalhaes, 1898), Dilepidoides bauchei (Joyeux, 1924). In domestic hens there were found all 9 species of cestodes while in wild Galliformes--only 7, which are mentioned for them for the first time.

[The effects of intramuscular and oral prophylaxis with vitamin K on the coagulation status of low-weight newborn infants].

The present prospective study carried out in 1993 in the SFH "Maĭchin Dom"--Sofia, includes newborn infants with birth weight below 2500 g. and aims to compare the effect of the prophylaxis of the haemorrhagic disease of the newborn by intramuscular and peroral application of vit. K. For this purpose some coagulation screening tests were followed out in intervals of 4-5 days during the first two weeks of life. These two groups are compared between one another and with non-prophylacted with vit. K healthy newborn babies. The results so obtained allow to make the conclusion that, on one side, the haemostasis of newborns with low birth weight is very labile and, on another, that the peroral and the intramuscular ways of prophylaxis with vit. K have the same effectiveness.

[News on the trip and the diplomatic mission of a Portuguese ambassador to China in 1752. Critical and analytical study].

The author of this report has worked out a critical-analytical study, based on the news of a voyage to China, carried out by a Portuguese ambassador, which was also a diplomatic mission, in 1752, during the Marquis of Pombal era, Prime Minister of king Dom Jose I. This study is directed under two perspectives: medical and historical-diplomatic. The former not only allows the assessment of the high degree of organization of this voyage as far as food supplies and medical support are concerned, but it also shows the reflection and the diagnosis correction of tuberculosis of the lungs, in a seaman, carried out by a surgeon on board, which we totally refute. The latter, which only aims at giving some further data for the study of the Portuguese Diplomatic History, let us know some of the complex procedures and protocols established between our diplomatic representative and the high Chinese rulers, both the Emperor himself and the mandarins. Contrary to other previous attempts of diplomatic, economic and social relations, either partially or totally frustrated, this mission constituted a great success for Portugal and may, indeed, be considered as a decisive step for the recognition of Portuguese sovereignty over the territory of Macao and its dependencies in 1887.

[Effects of reduced food intake on digestive flux and use of nitrogenous matter by goats].

Limited feeding effects (75% of ad libitum) were studied in 3 adult dry goats. Their diet was composed of dried beet pulps (1/3 DM), dried alfalfa (1/3 DM) and hay (1/3 DM). The CP content was 11.9% DM. Rumen fermented OM was decreased by 243 g.d-1, but rumen pH and ammonia content remained the same. Rumen bacteria synthesis efficiency was decreased (-4%), but the value (151 g crude bacteria protein.kg-1 DOM) was higher than conventional values used in PDI and NRC systems. Nitrogen rumen balance (duodenal N-N intake) was lower (-1.9 g.d-1) with restricted goats. This could be related to the increase in urinary urea excretion (+0.4 gN.d-1). There was no significant effect of the limiting feeding on total OM and N digestibilities. The disappearance rate of OM in the rumen and the small intestine tended to be higher (+4 and +8%, respectively) in the restricted animals. Nitrogen retention was lower (-5.7 g.d-1) in restricted goats. Only 59 (or 56%) of the duodenal nitrogen was protein. Their digestibility in the small gut was higher (+8 pts) than NPN digestibility. A total of 86% of duodenal RNA disappeared in the small gut but less than 60% of DAPA was digested in this part.
