[A stereoscopic device for simultaneous imaging of the fundus oculi].

A stereoscopic countershaft worked out by the authors is cooperating with stereoophthalmoscope model 110. The element of the binocular with its original lenses used in the countershaft was supplemented with prisms which rectify the distance of the geometrical centres of the pictures on the frame of a 35 mm film. A vertical central screen prevents the half-pictures to overlap. The length of the optical path beyond the stereoophthalmoscope amounts 130 mm. Simultaneous stereograms of the eye fundus received by means of this construction are characterized by a transversal enlargement 1.3 X, 1.65X and 3.3X.

[Stereological analysis of the degranulation and the contraction of platelets. Application to the ultrastructural study of thrombin induced excretion in vitro].

A stereological model, which provides quantitative information on the morphology of the platelet release reaction as isolated from platelet aggregation, was developed for the human platelets separated from blood by Mustard's procedure. Three morphologically defined spaces (granules, surface-connected canalicular system S.C.S., cytoplasm) were used to characterize platelet degranulation (with the variation of the volume density of the granules) and contraction (with the variation of the volume density of both granules and S.C.S.). This model was applied to the evaluation of ultrastructural changes associated with the thrombin-induced release reaction. Degranulation and contraction were associated in the platelets which had been allowed to release for 1,5 and 150 sec. Under conditions of the study, prostaglandins E1 (10(-7) M) inhibited both degranulation and contraction (p less than 0,001). Aspirin (10(-4) M) only inhibited contraction (p less than 0.01) and dibutyryl-AMPc (10(-4)) only inhibited granulation (p less than 0,001).

[Lip posture and facial profile standards in mass-media models].

It is considered that, among the elements that contribute to the formulation of an individual aesthetic judgement, the most important are the conditionings exercised on the subject by the modern proposals of the mass-media. In this work the positioning of the lips is defined and, more in general, an attempt is made to interpret the requirements of the facial profile in 150 models, whose face has appeared in the press over the last two years, based on the findings of an accurate photogrammetric examination.

In vivo measurements of relative motion between an uncemented femoral total hip component and the femur by roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis.

Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) was used to study rotation and subsidence of an uncemented polyethylene-coated femoral component for total hip arthroplasty in ten patients younger than 55 years of age. Three years postoperatively, the total subsidence averaged 2.44 mm and the internal rotation was 7.4 degrees. The rate of subsidence decreased between the observation periods, whereas the rate of rotation, after an initial significant decrease, became almost constant. One patient, who was a clinical failure and required revision arthroplasty, had a significantly higher rate of migration after six months. The pattern of subsidence in the absence of pain might be the normal reaction of bone to an uncemented prosthesis, but the continuing rotation suggests the potential for failure of the arthroplasty. The type of analysis made possible in RSA may allow early prediction of the success of arthroplasties and significantly speed the design cycle for arthroplasty components.

[Simultaneous stereograms of the fundus oculi].

Stereophotograms and stereoangiograms of the fundus in selected pathological conditions are presented. The simultaneous performance of fundus stereograms are devoid of drawbacks and faults encountered in stereoscopic pictures registered in double time. A major consistency of the half-pictures results from an identical utilization of the focal depth and an uniform illumination in one exposure. In the fluorographic examination this method is a method of choice in the registration of a spatial picture throughout the examination.

Measurement of joint kinematics using ExpertVision system.

Three-dimensional kinematic calculations based on the output from a video-based passive marker detection system was developed. Three-dimensional position data of the markers placed on the limb were obtained with the system and then run through a program that calculated absolute and relative joint kinematics based on Eulerian angle and screw axis description. In this study, the accuracy and limitation of the system for kinematic analysis were examined.

[Stereological study of the goblet-cell in colon with special reference to carcinoma].

Contrast-study for goblet-cells of the intestinal mucosa, polypoid adenoma, villus adenoma, non-type epitheliosis and ductal adenoid carcinoma of colon was carried out via stereological analysis, including stereology measure of structure parameter and particle parameter of volume density(Vv), surface density(Sv) and number density(Nv). By means of coherent test system A100, spot count, intersection count and profile count method were applied in each group for goblet-cell counting. Data indicated that goblet-cell decreased corresponding to the lowering down of differentiation stage of epithelial cell in large intestine. Goblet-cell of nearly 50% of adenoid carcinoma disappeared completely. Indices of Vv less than 0.03, Sv less than 2.3mm-1, Nv less than 16.1mm-3 were considered as important criteria for the diagnosis of early carcinoma. Besides, non-type hyperplasia was obtained also in polypoid adenoma of colon. So, there is the possibility of undergoing malignant change.

[Clinico-roentgeno-functional studies during expert evaluation of work capacity of patients with neurotrophic disorders after war-time neck injuries].

The paper is concerned with a clinico-roentgeno-functional++ study into sequelae of fighting injury to the osseous and soft tissue structures of the neck with the aid of testometric stereoroentgenogrammetry, a method of x-ray topical diagnosis used in fragmentation effects and gunshot injuries, as well as a method of color reading of limb roentgenograms to identify pathomorphological alterations and neurotrophic disorders of the osseous tissue. The pathofunctional alterations related to derangement of the radix structures can be verified by means of using the current methods of functional research: echoosteometry, rheovasography, etc.

Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis.

Soon after Roentgen's discovery, the 'new' rays were used to produce stereoscopic images or used for spatial reconstruction of positions of foreign bodies. However, no systematic use of roentgen stereo measurements seems to have occurred until the 1970's, although many attempts have been made before. Since 1972, a system for roentgen stereophotogrammetry has been in use at the University Hospital in Lund. The system has been named RSA, roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis. It is a complete system, including instrumentation for implanting tantalum landmarks, devices for calibration of the stereo roentgen set-up, and comprehensive software. Using different calibration set-ups, any part of the body can be investigated under different conditions using standard roentgen equipment. The computer programs make it possible to calculate spatial landmark coordinates from measured film coordinates, and further to calculate growth, and volume changes or kinematic variables in well-defined and generally used terms. After the basic principles have been established, a survey of applications grouped according to anatomic regions follows. Special emphasis is laid on total hip and knee replacement, which besides complex craniofacial and spinal disorders, are the most rewarding fields of study.

Knee motion in total knee arthroplasty. A roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis of the kinematics of the Tricon-M knee prosthesis.

The three-dimensional kinematics of the Tricon-M knee prosthesis during active knee flexion and extension were recorded in 11 patients with arthrosis or rheumatoid arthritis using roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis. Twenty-three normal knees constituted the control group. The prosthetic knees displayed the same degrees of freedom regarding rotational and translational movements as the normal knees, although the kinematics were different. A combination of internal rotation, abduction, and lateral translation of the tibia was recorded during flexion, and the reversed movements were recorded during extension. During the first 25 degrees of flexion, these movements were small, reflecting the high congruency between the articular surfaces, while beyond 25 degrees they increased. The normal knees displayed a combination of internal rotation, adduction, and medial translation of the tibia during flexion and the reversed movements during extension. The prosthetic knees also exhibited an increased posterior displacement during increasing flexion when compared with the normal knees. There was a correlation between the positioning of the femoral component in the sagittal plane and the recorded anterior/posterior translations. In conclusion, the kinematics of the Tricon-M knee prosthesis significantly differ from the normal knee, probably because of the design of the prosthesis and the absence of the cruciate ligaments.

[Stereological quantitative analysis of LM and EM images on membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN) in rabbits].

MGN model in rabbits was established according to Border's method. The pathological changes of MGN were analysed through stereological quantitation technique under LM and EM. Results indicate that the quantitative parameters of subepithelial electron dense deposits and the glomeruli in the experimental group were remarkably different statistically from those of the control group (P less than 0.05 or P less than 0.001). In the experimental group, the volume density of glomerular crescent or circumferential corpuscle was 17.39% at the 8th week of the experiment. The thickness of glomerular basement membrane was 168 nm in the control group and 627 nm in the experimental group (P less than 0.001).

An evaluation of methods to quantitate the chick chorioallantoic membrane assay in angiogenesis.

The vascular responses by chick chorioallantoic membranes (CAM) to more than 150 normal and chemically injured rat corneas grafted to shell-less chicken CAMs were evaluated independently by three observers in a masked fashion by in vivo stereomicroscopy, projections of colored transparencies, and by light microscopy of tissue sections of the grafts. The experience gained from this study is reviewed as a point of focus for the strengths and weaknesses of the CAM technique in the assay of potential angiogenic substances. Despite certain shortcomings, the CAM technique can provide useful information relevant to studies on angiogenesis, particularly when the subjective CAM method is supplemented by histological evaluation of grafted tissues.

Corneal topography using rasterstereography.

Rasterstereography is a new method of determining the topography of the cornea. Unlike Placido disc types of systems it does not depend on the reflectivity of the corneal surface, and it can provide information about the entire corneal, limbal and interpalpebral conjunctival surfaces. Since a smooth reflective surface is not required, images can be obtained with epithelial irregularity or defects, sutures, or stromal ulceration. A grid of horizontal and vertical bars of light is projected onto the cornea, and the pattern of the grid on the ocular surface is determined by its topography. The image is obtained by a video camera, and digitized, stored, and analyzed by an image processor. A three dimensional image of the corneal surface, contour maps of corneal elevation, and corneal curvature can be displayed.

Ankle fractures. A clinical and roentgenographic stereophotogrammetric study.

To analyze postoperative fracture stability and late ankle mortise mobility, 46 lateral malleolar and 53 bimalleolar ankle fractures were randomly separated to either early or late weight-bearing groups and followed for 18 months. Internal fixation with cerclage wires, staples, and pins were used. Better clinical results were found among the lateral malleolar compared with the bimalleolar fractures. Roentgenographic stereophotogrammetric analysis revealed only small movements in the ankle mortise during fracture healing, although a greater dorsal translation and outward rotation of the fibula were found among the pronation injuries compared with the supination injuries. The repair of a ruptured deltoid ligament was not necessary. An increased rigidity of the ankle mortise was found 18 months after injury. Internal fixation with cerclage wires, staples, and pins is a simple and reliable method that provides sufficient stability to allow immediate postoperative weight bearing in a walking cast for most ankle fractures.
