[Cosmophysical fluctuations and development of the human embryo].

An analysis of the dependence of embryonic pathology development on heliocosmic factors is conducted and regular changes of the appearance of different kinds of pathology depending on heliocosmic situations in different months of the year are shown. Periods of conception of increasing amount of children with different disturbances of development coincide with values of the Wolf's number and sun-radiation stream density of certain ranges in comparison with the mean values, the same indexes are in conformity with the periods of conception of children having haemolytic disease and diabetic foetopathy.

Solar photocatalytic decolorization of methylene blue in water.

In this study, a photocatalytic decolorization system equipped with immobilized TiO2 and illuminated by solar light was used to remove the color of wastewater. To examine the decoloring efficiency of this system, photocatalytic decolorization of an organic dye such as methylene blue was studied as an example. The effects of light source, pH, as well as the initial concentration of dye were also investigated. It was observed that the solution of methylene blue could be almost completely decolorized by the solar light/TiO2 film process while there was about 50% color remaining with solar irradiation only. In addition, it was found that the decoloring efficiency of solution was higher with solar light irradiation than with artificial UV light irradiation, even though the artificial UV light source supplied higher UV intensity at 254 nm. The color removal rate of methylene blue with solar light irradiation was almost twice that of artificial UV light irradiation. This phenomena was mainly attributed to that some visible light range of solar light was useful for exciting the methylene blue molecules adsorbed on TiO2 film, leading to a photosensitization process undergoing and decoloring efficiency promoted. This solar-assisted photocatalytic device showed potential application for decoloring organic dyes in wastewater.

"Mir" radiation dosimetry results during the solar proton events in September-October 1989.

Using data from dosimetry-radiometry system "Liulin" on board of "Mir"-space station the particle flux and doserate during September-October, 1989 has been studied. The orbit of the station was 379 km perigee, 410 km apogee and 51.6 degrees inclination. Special attention has been paid to the flux and doserate changes inside the station after intensive solar proton events (SPE) on 29 of September, 1989. The comparison between the doses before and after the solar flares shows increase of the calculated mean dose per day by factor of 10 to 200. During the SPE on the 29 of September the additional dose was 310 mrad. The results of the experiment are compared with the data for the solar proton fluxes obtained on the GOES-7 satellite.

Comparisons of spore dosimetry and spectral photometry of solar-UV radiation at four sites in Japan and Europe.

In order to develop monitoring and assessment systems of biologically effective doses of solar-UV radiation, concurrent measurements of spectral photometry and spore dosimetry were conducted in summer months at four sites in Japan and Europe. Effectiveness spectra were derived by multiplying spectral irradiance in 0.5 nm steps between 290 and 400 nm with the inactivation efficiency of the spores determined using monochromatic radiation of fine wavelength resolution. Shapes of the effectiveness spectra were very similar at the four sites exhibiting major peaks at 303.5, 305.0, 307.5 and 311.0 nm. The dose rates for spore inactivation from direct survival measurements and from calculations by the integration of the effectiveness spectra were compared for 174 data points. The ratios (observed/calculated) of the two values were concordant with a mean of 1.26 (+/- 0.24 standard deviation [SD]). The possible causes for the variations and slightly larger observed values are discussed.

Does swarming cause honey bees to update their solar ephemerides?

Spatial orientation in the social insects offers several examples of specialized learning mechanisms that underlie complex learning tasks. Here we study one of these systems: the processes by which honey bees update, or fail to update, their memories of the sun's daily pattern of movement (the solar ephemeris function) in relation to the landscape. Specifically, we ask whether bees that have initially learned the solar ephemeris function relative to a conspicuous treeline at their natal site can later realign the ephemeris to a differently oriented treeline. We first confirm and clarify an earlier finding that bees transplanted passively (by being carried) do not re-learn the solar ephemeris in relation to the new treeline. When they cannot detect the sun directly, as on overcast days, these transplanted bees use a solar ephemeris function appropriate for their natal site, despite days or weeks of experience at the new site. We then ask whether bees put through a swarming process as they are transplanted are induced to re-learn the solar ephemeris function at the new site, as swarming is a natural process wherein bees transplant themselves. Most of the swarmed bees failed to re-learn, even though they did extensive learning flights (in comparison with those of non-swarmed controls) as they first emerged from the hive at the new site. We hypothesize that the bees' representation of the solar ephemeris function is stored in an encapsulated cognitive module in which the ephemeris is inextricably linked to the reference landscape in which it was learned.

Skin testing with simple equipment in photodermatoses.

We have reviewed 275 patients who were tested in the light testing clinic in the 10 years from 1972 to 1981. 151 patients (55%) were referred with eczematous changes of the skin attributed to light, while 76 (28%) had a history of polymorphic light eruption. Light tests gave abnormal results in 54 (36%) of the dermatitis group, showing a photoallergy in 17 patients and UV sensitivity with or without sensitivity to visible light in 30 patients. 7 out of 10 cases with clinical reactions to phenothiazines also had abnormal test results. Patients with polymorphic light eruption reacted normally in our test system. Abnormal tests were obtained in solar urticaria, in a few cases of non-eczematous phototoxic reactions, folliculitis of the acne type and systemic lupus erythematosus. Additional patch tests with standard allergens revealed a high % of contact sensitivity in the 30 UV sensitive patients.

A gaseous metal disk around a white dwarf.

The destiny of planetary systems through the late evolution of their host stars is very uncertain. We report a metal-rich gas disk around a moderately hot and young white dwarf. A dynamical model of the double-peaked emission lines constrains the outer disk radius to just 1.2 solar radii. The likely origin of the disk is a tidally disrupted asteroid, which has been destabilized from its initial orbit at a distance of more than 1000 solar radii by the interaction with a relatively massive planetesimal object or a planet. The white dwarf mass of 0.77 solar mass implies that planetary systems may form around high-mass stars.

The two major spore DNA repair pathways, nucleotide excision repair and spore photoproduct lyase, are sufficient for the resistance of Bacillus subtilis spores to artificial UV-C and UV-B but not to solar radiation.

Bacterial endospores are 1 to 2 orders of magnitude more resistant to 254-nm UV (UV-C) radiation than are exponentially growing cells of the same strain. This high UV resistance is due to two related phenomena: (i) DNA of dormant spores irradiated with 254-nm UV accumulates mainly a unique thymine dimer called the spore photoproduct (SP), and (ii) SP is corrected during spore germination by two major DNA repair pathways, nucleotide excision repair (NER) and an SP-specific enzyme called SP lyase. To date, it has been assumed that these two factors also account for resistance of bacterial spores to solar UV in the environment, despite the fact that sunlight at the Earth's surface consists of UV-B, UV-A, visible, and infrared wavelengths of approximately 290 nm and longer. To test this assumption, isogenic strains of Bacillus subtilis lacking either the NER or SP lyase DNA repair pathway were assayed for their relative resistance to radiation at a number of UV wavelengths, including UV-C (254 nm), UV-B (290 to 320 nm), full-spectrum sunlight, and sunlight from which the UV-B portion had been removed. For purposes of direct comparison, spore UV resistance levels were determined with respect to a calibrated biological dosimeter consisting of a mixture of wild-type spores and spores lacking both DNA repair systems. It was observed that the relative contributions of the two pathways to spore UV resistance change depending on the UV wavelengths used in a manner suggesting that spores irradiated with light at environmentally relevant UV wavelengths may accumulate significant amounts of one or more DNA photoproducts in addition to SP. Furthermore, it was noted that upon exposure to increasing wavelengths, wild-type spores decreased in their UV resistance from 33-fold (UV-C) to 12-fold (UV-B plus UV-A sunlight) to 6-fold (UV-A sunlight alone) more resistant than mutants lacking both DNA repair systems, suggesting that at increasing solar UV wavelengths, spores are inactivated either by DNA damage not reparable by the NER or SP lyase system, damage caused to photosensitive molecules other than DNA, or both.

Ultraviolet Rayleigh-Mie lidar by use of a multicavity Fabry-Perot filter for accurate temperature profiling of the troposphere.

A UV Rayleigh-Mie scattering lidar system at 355 nm has been upgraded for more-accurate temperature profiling of the troposphere by use of a new multicavity Fabry-Perot etalon (MCFPE) filter. The MCFPE filter, which was designed to improve the stability and operational characteristics of the lidar system, has three filter bandpass functions and separates one Mie scattering and two Rayleigh scattering signals from the lidar return signal and simultaneously acts as a laser frequency discriminator to lock the laser frequency. Moreover, a high-resolution grating is employed to block signal interference from Raman scattering and the solar background. A practical lidar system, which features strong system stabilization and high measurement accuracy, has been built, and the performance of the lidar system has been verified by comparison of temperature profiling between the lidar and a radiosonde. Good agreement between the two instrument measurements was obtained in terms of lapse rate and inversion layer height. Statistical temperature errors of less than 1 K up to a height of 3 km are obtainable with 5 min observation time for daytime measurements.

Effects of high energy particle (HZE) radiation on the distal lung.

Major sources of concern for manned space travel are the effects of high energy particle (HZE) radiation on various biological systems, and the consequences of major solar activity. To date, considerable attention has been directed toward HZE-induced alterations both on non-dividing systems, such as the retina, cornea and brain, and on dividing systems, such as the gut and testis. This paper is focused on the morphologically detectable late-occurring alterations in the distal lung, and toward a comparison of the changes with those induced by x-irradiation. Briefly, the salient alterations involve an increase in the width of the septal walls and the capillary and alveolar basal laminae, and the irregularity of the luminal surface of the capillaries, as exemplified by the presence of filipodial projections and blebbing. All alterations were focal in their localization, and no cells of any type (e.g., epithelial, endothelial or stromal) appeared to undergo damage, an observation quite unlike the cellular changes induced by x-irradiation.

Motility and gravitactic orientation of the flagellate, Euglena gracilis, impaired by artificial and solar UV-B radiation.

The effects of ultraviolet radiation on the gravitactic orientation of the freshwater flagellate, Euglena gracilis, were determined by a real time image analysis system. Both artificial UV radiation and solar radiation in a temperature-controlled growth chamber were employed. Histograms of gravitaxis showed that the degree of orientation decreased with increasing exposure time; this can be quantified using the Rayleigh test and upper quadrant summation. The effects of artificial UV radiation on the orientation are considerably stronger than those of solar radiation, probably because the radiation source emits higher fluence rates below 300 nm than found in solar radiation. The effects of monochromatic ultraviolet radiation on motility have been determined, and an action spectrum has been calculated.

Solarization in clinical imaging.

X-ray exposure levels at which solarization occurs were determined for a new screen-film system and its predecessor, both from the same manufacturer and both with a speed class of 400. Solarization (contrast reversal [lead markers imaged as black on a lighter back-ground]) was clearly evident with the new system at a cassette exposure level of 132 mR (3.4 x 10(-5) C/kg). No solarization was exhibited by the old system even at five times this exposure. In rare cases, solarization can obscure bone and soft-tissue detail, thereby degrading the diagnostic accuracy of the radiograph.

Comparisons of the polar lipid and pigment profiles of two solar salterns located in Newark, California, USA, and Eilat, Israel.

The whole community pigments and lipids have been examined during a 5-year period in two commercial solar salterns located in the United States and in Israel. There were significant differences in the complexity of the lipid and pigment patterns within the California saltern system, and these differences were not consistent over the sampling period despite examination of ponds with the same salinity. The solar saltern system in Eilat, Israel, showed greater consistency during this sampling period and compared directly with previous studies. The complexity of the saltern in Newark, California, could be explained on the basis of the prevailing weather conditions (cooler and more rainfall) and the nutrient-enriched source water. The Eilat saltern, however, has an oligotrophic water source and has a considerably warmer and drier climate. This difference resulted in more diverse and more complex pigment and lipid patterns and presumably microbial populations in the Newark, California, plant than in the saltern in Eilat, Israel.

Toxicity and carcinogenicity of chromium compounds in humans.

Chromium is a human carcinogen primarily by inhalation exposure in occupational settings. Although lung cancer has been established as a consequence of hexavalent chromium exposure in smokers and nonsmokers, some cancers of other tissues of the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems have also been noted. Except for a few reports from China, little is known about the health risks of environmental exposures to chromium. Likewise, there has been a lack of epidemiological studies of human exposure to hexavalent Cr by drinking water or ingestion, and it has been suggested that humans can perhaps tolerate hexavalent Cr at higher levels than the current drinking water standard of 50 ppb. This review highlights the most recent data on the induction of skin tumors in mice by chronic drinking-water exposure to hexavalent chromium in combination with solar ultraviolet light. This experimental system represents an important new animal model for chromate-induced cancers by ingestion of drinking water, and it suggests by extrapolation that chromate can likely be considered a human carcinogen by ingestion as well. The potential use of this animal model for future risk assessment is discussed.
