[Clinico-electrophysiological correlations in the evaluation of sciatica].

The electromyographic investigations of the mental and temporal muscles have been completed in 50 patients treated because of sciatic pain. The activity of these muscles is inseparably associated with the emotional response to pain. Than the parameters of the above mentioned investigations have been compared with the subjective evaluation of pain intensity and with the neurological examination results. In patients with sciatic pain, the bioelectric activity of the mental and temporal muscles growing clearly with the increase of pain, have bean kept as rest. This activity has been more intensive on the ill side of the muscles; also, it has been more distinct in patients with loss symptoms and with some changes in the radiological examination of the spine. The increase of the bioelectric activity of the mental muscles has correlated positively to the degree of pain intensity (measured by Domzał standards) and the number of radicular symptoms. The EMG investigation of the mental muscles has proved to be more useful for the assessment of sciatic pain than the same investigation of the temporal muscles.

Outpatient treatment of lumbar disc sciatica.

Of 47 patients with lumbar disc disease and sciatic radiculopathy (L-5 or S-1), 39 were successfully managed at home and as outpatients in an ambulatory care facility designed for the treatment of arthritis and back pain. When these patients were evaluated one to three years following discharge, they maintained their maximum level of activity and functional improvement noted at discharge. The average total cost per patient including physician's fees, x-rays, laboratory and therapy was approximately equivalent to the day rate for 1(1/2) days in hospital.
