As part of a study to establish the prevalence of renal calculus disease, alkaline phosphatase activity was measured by the method recommended by the Scandinavian Society for Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Physiology in the plasma of 3823 adults from the Scottish new town of Cumbernauld. The enzyme activity differs in males and females and increases with age. Reference ranges are presented.
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was measured in a sample of 4,403 women, aged 45-70 years in 11 Centers for health screening, to define the interest of this biological indicator for screening subclinical hypothyroidism. The aim of this work was to describe clinical signs, symptoms and medical history linked to TSH variations, to estimate the distribution of this hormone in a general population and reference limits in a selected subgroup. All the participating laboratories used the same third-generation immunoassay on fresh samples. In the general sample population (age mean: 55.2 6.9 yrs), 1.1% presented hyperthyroidism (TSH<0.3 mU/l) and 0.4% had hypothyroidism (TSH>12 mU/l). In the sub-sample of 151 women (3.4%) with TSH between 4-12 mU/l, 131 had subclinical hypothyroidism (FT4>8 ng/l). The TSH mean was significantly lower (- 10 to - 23%) in women presenting a nodular goiter. Inversely, TSH was higher in women with muscle cramps, asthenia, recent weight gain, morning eyelid edema and abnormal electrocardiogram. The reference limits for percentiles 2.5 and 97.5 were 0.43 and 3.71 mU/l on 1 348 subjects after excluding women having one of these symptoms or taking any drug treatment.
This investigation was carried out in an effort to analyze the influence of various degrees of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) on cardiovascular and physical performance. Assessment of the severity of IHD was based on observations obtained routinely during exercise tests (ST segment response and systolic blood pressure response). The study group included 926 subjects with known or suspected IHD, who were referred for an exercise testing; 268 females, mean age 54 years (range 19-89 years), and 658 males, mean age 52 years (range 16-88 years). We found that increasing IHD severity was associated with significant reductions of cardiovascular performance. The mean maximum work-load (MWL) was lower in females than in males, and MWL as well as mean maximum heart rate (MHR) and mean maximum change in systolic blood pressure (M delta SBP) decreased with increasing IHD and age. The present results may be used to assess the cardiovascular response to exercise in patients with IHD so that altered responses due to causes other than IHD may be identified. Furthermore the result may prove useful in the adjustment of rate responsive pacemakers (RRP) in patients with IHD.
Blood serum samples were obtained from 114 crossbred calves on a feed trial under feedlot conditions at the end of a 56-day feeding period. Average values for 19 blood components were determined. The effects of the 3 trial rations and 2 electrolyte treatments were analyzed. Except for inorganic phosphates, urea nitrogen, cholesterol, glucose, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase most mean values were similar to those in dairy cattle. Urea nitrogen values differed significantly (P less than 0.05) in animals fed different rations apparently reflecting the crude protein content of each ration. The mean values presented can be used as base-line data for comparison with other similar studies or with values from diseased animals.

The following hematologic parameters in 1,744 healthy men and women aged 16 to 89 years were studied: leukocyte count, erythrocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), and mean cell hemoglobin concentration. The frequency distributions of all parameters were statistically significantly deviated from Gaussian distributions. Standard Gaussian statistical methods as well as nonparametric methods were used to establish 95% reference intervals for each parameter. The effects of sex and age upon these parameters were also studied. Significant age differences, which were most striking for leukocyte count, erythrocyte count, MCV, and MCH, were detected.

Blood samples were collected from 30 male and female hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) from two sources. Serum was collected and analyzed for 17 biochemical values. The results were analyzed statistically and comparisons were made between males and females and between strains.
The concentration of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in blood of 195 healthy men and 39 women was measured by alkali denaturation method of Singer et al. Arithmetic mean in the group of men was 0.325% whereas in women it was 0.399%. The difference between the means was statistically significant. Frequency histograms showed two unlike subpopulations with wider span of values in women, different standardised skewness and kurtosis. Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test revealed a significant abnormality of both distributions. The data presented may serve for the comparison of HbF values obtained in persons living and working in similar microclimatic conditions.

We have developed an high performance liquid chromatographic procedure employing amperometric detection for the measurement of urinary free norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine. The between-day precision (C.V.) at various concentrations of the above analytes varied from 4.8-11.6%. There was negligible between-urine difference in the percent recovery of norepinephrine and epinephrine but considerable between-urine difference for dopamine. The procedure has been used to determine reference ranges in infants, children and adults. Its preliminary application to the laboratory detection of neural crest tumors is also described.
