Time domain correlation analysis of heart rate variability in preterm neonates.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: A fuller understanding of the neural control mechanisms of heart rate during the early stages of human development would be of great value to obstetric and neonatal management. In this paper, we investigate the correlation between heart rate variability (HRV) and other physiological parameters such as blood pressure and respiration in preterm neonates with the aim of developing a numerical model to explain and predict heart rate variability. STUDY DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: All the required data are readily available for premature babies who are routinely monitored while being nursed in intensive care, and we have collected large data sets for a random group of such neonates. For the quantitative analysis of the data, we have developed a time domain correlation method, which has a number of advantages over the more commonly used power spectral analysis. We have been able to study the dynamics of the different frequency components of HRV by this method. RESULTS: Highly correlated behaviour of the different HRV components, previously observed in our work on fetal HRV, is also present in the neonate, with similar characteristic time constants. Furthermore, the correlation of high-frequency (HF) oscillations of HRV with respiration and that of low-frequency (LF) oscillations of HRV with blood pressure are demonstrated on timescales of a single oscillation. In neonates receiving artificial ventilation, the correlation between HRV and respiration depends on the type of ventilation involved and assumes opposite polarities for the two main types of equipment currently in use. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate that it is possible to analyse HRV quantitatively by calculating the relative gains and characteristic time constants for the correlated parameters and components.

Childhood leukaemias and CNS tumours: correlation of international incidence rates.

Childhood leukaemia has a potential infectious aetiology whilst infections may also be linked to paediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumours. Using data from 29 countries we investigated the correlation between international incidence rates of childhood leukaemia and CNS tumours, focusing on acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), astrocytoma and ependymoma-subtypes that are hypothesised to have an infectious aetiology. Relationships between incidence rates and national demographic factors were also examined using Pearson's correlation coefficient to quantify associations. Comparing two diagnostic categories of leukaemia with four groups of CNS tumours, a highly significant positive correlation was found between ALL and astrocytoma (r = 0.57, P = 0.002). Higher rates of ALL and CNS tumours were associated with increased affluence, with the strongest correlation for Gross Domestic Product per capita and CNS tumours (r = 0.70, P < 0.001). National incidence rates of childhood ALL and astrocytomas were highly correlated and this may reflect a common environmental cause whose origin may be infectious in nature. International incidence of ALL and CNS tumours were also correlated with economic related factors. Variation in levels of ascertainment may partially explain this, although childhood environmental exposures related to infections will also be affected by levels of affluence.

In vitro CT evaluation of intrahepatic stones: correlation with chemical composition.

OBJECTIVE: To describe in vitro CT features of intrahepatic stones and to correlate CT attenuation with chemical composition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of the patients who underwent choledochoscopic intrahepatic stone removal between 1998 and 2001, 54 patients with stones larger than 3 mm were enrolled in this study. In each case, a chemical compositional analysis was performed to determine calcium, cholesterol, total bilirubin, and inorganic phosphorus compositions. The three largest stones obtained from each patient were imaged by CT. CT attenuation numbers were measured in the center images of each stone by drawing free-hand region of interest (ROI). The measured CT attenuation numbers were correlated with their chemical composition. Also, CT attenuation numbers of stones were compared with that of the liver on non-contrast CT (50-70 HU). RESULTS: Stone size ranged from 3.1 to 10.5 mm (mean +/- S.D.: 6.0 +/- 1.4). The CT attenuation numbers (HU) of stones ranged from 36.4 to 410.19 (mean +/- S.D.: 94.6 +/- 49.9). CT numbers of stones were below 70 HU in 11 patients (20.4%), and below 90 HU in 33 patients (59.3%). The chemical analysis data of the stones were as follows: calcium (0.5-6.5 wt.%; mean +/- S.D., 2.6 +/- 1.4), total bilirubin (0.45-24.4 wt.%; 13.1 +/- 6.2), cholesterol (5.4-73.9 wt.%; 29.3 +/- 17.4), phosphorus (0.1-1.2 wt.%; 0.6 +/- 0.3), and non-soluble residue (17.6-85.4 wt.%; 57.0 +/- 22.6). There was a weak but significant correlation between calcium composition and CT attenuation (r = 0.38, P < 0.01) and no significant correlation between other chemical compositions and the CT attenuation (cholesterol, r = 0.01, P > 0.01; total bilirubin, r = 0.05, P > 0.01; phosphorus, r = 0.01, P > 0.01). CONCLUSION: On non-contrast CT, intrahepatic stones would not be hyperattenuating with respect to liver parenchyma in about one fifth of patients. The CT attenuation of stones correlates with calcium and does not correlate with any other chemical composition.

Serum leptin levels correlate with obesity parameters but not with hyperinsulinism in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To examine serum leptin concentrations in obese and lean patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to assess whether the changes in leptin levels are due to obesity or hormonal alterations. DESIGN: Controlled clinical study. SETTING: Academic research environment. PATIENT(S): Obese and lean women with PCOS. INTERVENTION(S): Blood samples were collected before and after food consumption. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Serum leptin and insulin levels. RESULT(S): Serum leptin concentrations were significantly correlated with body mass index (r = 0.649) and also with HOMA (r = 0.535). However, after controlling for body mass index in a partial correlation analysis, no significant correlation was found between serum leptin levels and HOMA or hyperinsulinemia. While lean patients with PCOS had a significant correlation between leptin concentrations and obesity parameters, they did not show any significant correlation with insulin resistance parameters. CONCLUSION(S): Although leptin concentrations in women with PCOS correlate with insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia, this is related only to obesity.

Ovarian size and blood flow in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and their correlations with endocrine parameters.

OBJECTIVE: To determine how common polycystic ovarian morphology may be in women given the clinical diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) based on chronic anovulation and hyperandrogenism and whether certain hormonal factors correlate with ovarian morphology and blood flow. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Two academic endocrinology centers in Italy. PATIENT(S): Three hundred twenty-six women with PCOS and 50 age-matched and weight-matched ovulatory women. INTERVENTION(S): Ultrasound assessment of ovarian morphology in patients and controls and ovarian blood flow and fasting hormone levels in a subset of 50 patients and matched controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Ovarian morphological assessments, ovarian blood flow by pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI), and measurements of gonadotropins, estrogen, sex hormone-binding globulin, androgens, inhibin B, glucose, and insulin. RESULT(S): Using strict ultrasound criteria, 195 woman (60%) had enlarged ovaries, 135 (35%) had normal ovarian size but characteristic morphology, and 16 (5%) had normal size and morphology. Ovarian blood flow was increased (reduced PI and RI) in PCOS. All hormonal parameters were elevated in PCOS. Ovarian size correlated only with insulin and a measure of insulin resistance. Ovarian blood flow correlated positively with insulin, T, free T, and E2 but not with luteinizing hormone. Inhibin B showed a negative correlation with ovarian blood flow. CONCLUSION(S): When a clinical diagnosis of PCOS was made, virtually all women were found to have characteristic ovarian morphology. Insulin correlated with increased ovarian size as well as with increased blood flow. Blood flow also correlated positively with sex steroids but negatively with inhibin B.

Smad4 protein expression correlates with grade, stage, and DNA ploidy in prostatic adenocarcinomas.

The tumor suppressor gene Smad4 (DPC4) has been localized to chromosome 18q21.1 and is a member of the Smad family that mediates the transforming growth factor beta signaling pathway suppressing epithelial cell growth. However, variable expression of this protein has been reported, with a loss in some cancers and increased expression in others. Given both the variability and lack of consensus reported regarding Smad4 expression in prostate cancer, we assessed Smad4 immunoreactivity in prostatic adenocarcinomas (PACs). Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 133 PACs were immunostained by a manual method using indirect biotin streptavidin horseradish peroxidase and diaminobenzidine detection using a monoclonal mouse antihuman Smad4 antibody (sc-7966; Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc, Santa Cruz, Calif). Nuclear immunoreactivity and cytoplasmic immunoreactivity were each semiquantitatively scored based on intensity and percentage of positive cells. Deoxyribonucelic acid ploidy was determined on Feulgen-stained tissue sections by static image analysis. Results were correlated with morphological and prognostic variables. Variable nuclear and cytoplasmic Smad4 positivity was noted in the adjacent benign glands in all cases. Of 133 PACs, 64 (48%) featured increased nuclear and 68 (51%) featured increased cytoplasmic protein expression. Nuclear Smad4 overexpression correlated with tumor grade (P = .02), stage (P = .04), and DNA ploidy (P = .04). Cytoplasmic overexpression correlated with tumor grade (P = .04) and DNA ploidy (P = .04) while showing a trend for correlation with tumor stage (P = .08). Neither nuclear nor cytoplasmic Smad4 overexpression correlated with postsurgical biochemical disease recurrence. Smad4 protein expression persists in PACs compared with benign glands, with both nuclear and cytoplasmic overexpression correlating with prognostic variables indicative of aggressive tumor behavior. Given the significant reported variability of Smad4 in several different cancers, further studies in prostate and other tumors are warranted to elucidate its role in tumorigenesis.

Correlation between the tissue Doppler, strain rate, strain imaging during the dobutamine infusion and coronary fractional flow reserve during catheterization: a comparative study.

UNLABELLED: Coronary fractional flow reserve (FFR) as an invasive, and dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) as a noninvasive technique were used to detect critical coronary stenosis. This study was undertaken to assess correlation between these two techniques by using tissue Doppler, strain rate (SR), and strain imaging (S). METHODS: In 17 patients (aged 54.9+/-12.6, 4 F), a total of 22 vessels were studied. On dobutamine stress echocardiography, baseline and peak systolic (Sm), early (Em) and late (Am) diastolic myocardial velocities, SR and S were recorded from parasternal view (mid-posterior segment) for radial and apical view (mid-septum) for longitudinal deformation. Then coronary FFR was performed by using intracoronary adenosine infusion, and the value of < or = 0.75 was accepted as critical coronary stenosis. RESULTS: FFR was found to be significant in 10 vessels (FFR critical). Baseline Sm, Em/Am, SR, S values, and peak Em/Am, SR, S values were similar between critical or noncritical FFR groups. Baseline Sm and Em, and change between baseline and peak Sm and S were significantly higher in noncritical FFR group (p < 0.01, < 0.05, < 0.001, < 0.001, respectively). In all vessels, FFR after adenosine infusion showed a poor correlation with WMSI, Em, Am, Em/Am values, and the change in SR values (r = -0.22, 0.16, -0.14, 0.21, 18, respectively) showed a good correlation with the change in S (r = 0.51; p = 0.014), and a very good correlation with the change in Sm values (r = 0.77; p < 0.001) during DSE. When FFR values at left coronary system were analyzed for longitudinal SR and S values, it had a mild correlation with SR (r = 0.47, p = 0.044) and a good correlation with S (r = 0.66, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The quantification of regional myocardial deformation by using DSE rather than the motion would be more appropriate in detecting the ischemic dysfunctional segment supplied by the critical coronary stenosis. Strain measurement during the dobutamine infusion may provide an information on the FFR results of the culprit vessel.

Pediatric vocal nodules: correlation with perceptual voice analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To present the epidemiology and correlation with perceptual analysis of vocal nodules in pediatric patients. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients seen in a tertiary care pediatric hospital's voice center from 1996 to 2003. Six hundred and forty-six patients were evaluated with videostroboscopic examinations and perceptual analysis of voice characteristics by speech pathologists. Appropriate treatment was based on the pathology identified. RESULTS: Two hundred and fifty-four patients (40%) with an average age of 7.7 years (range 0.1-19.3 years) were identified as having vocal nodules. Of these, 72% were male. Six patients (2%) were under the age of 7 months. Nodules were most commonly found in males, aged 3-10 years old. Evidence of gastro-esophageal reflux disease was found in one-quarter of patients; hyperfunction of the larynx was seen in three-fourths. Hyperfunction of the larynx correlates with the size of vocal nodules. Distortion of the vocal fold mucosal wave was not present. Perceptual analysis revealed positive correlation of the severity of hoarseness, breathiness, straining and aphonia with the size of vocal nodules. CONCLUSION: The epidemiology and correlation with perceptual voice analysis in pediatric patients with vocal nodules is presented. Hyperfunction of the larynx correlates with nodule size, while the presence of reflux disease does not. The severity of hoarseness, breathiness, straining and aphonia correlates with the size of vocal nodules.

Universal newborn hearing screening follow-up in two Georgia populations: newborn, mother and system correlates.

BACKGROUND: Nearly half of babies who "fail" their newborn hearing screening do not receive appropriate follow-up. Various explanations have been suggested. OBJECTIVE: To investigate, in two contrasting populations of newborns in Georgia, contemporaneous medical, socio-demographic and screening correlates of follow-up after newborn hearing screening. Three hypotheses were addressed: (1) follow-up correlated with particular medical, social and demographic features; (2) screening performance indicators correlated with follow-up; and (3) screening policies and procedures correlated with follow-up. METHODS: The studied babies, born July 2001 through June 2003 at Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital and Waycross Health District, had failed screening in both ears. Each site had about 4000 births per year, and a plan for outpatient follow-up of in-patient "fail" babies. RESULTS: At Piedmont, where Medicaid funded less than 7% of the births, 57% (130/230) had known follow-up to outpatient screening. In contrast, at Waycross, where Medicaid funded 89.6% of the births, 100% (38/38) had follow-up. The first study hypothesis was only partially supported by the data-from Piedmont, but not Waycross. White race and maternal age 30 years or older correlated with following-up: odds ratios 2.07 (95% CI 1.17, 3.68) and 1.83 (1.05, 3.17), respectively. Private health insurance and marriage trended with following-up. Follow-up rates did not correlate with the rates of screening refusal, missed screening and "fail" rates. Follow-up was unrelated to mothers witnessing the screening, receiving in-person explanations and having appointments arranged for them. The Piedmont and Waycross programs were quite different. Piedmont's began in 2001, mothers typically learned about screening when it was done and "fail" babies were reported to many public health entities. In contrast, the Waycross program was more than 20 years old, prenatal care included teaching about screening and reporting was to one public health entity. CONCLUSIONS: Though maternal socio-demographic features (poor, non-white, young) and access problems have been considered factors for non-follow-up, this study found two program characteristics most important: the lack of prenatal education about newborn hearing screening, and the lack of functionally integrated hospital hearing information with Public Health.

Symptom-specific EEG power correlations in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Neurophysiological studies in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) consistently revealed frontal alterations of cortical activity but otherwise showed inhomogeneous results, conceivably due to variable subgroups with diverse pathomechanisms involved. The aim of this study was to investigate quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) in patients with OCD as compared to healthy controls and to correlate neurophysiological data with clinical variables. EEGs were digitally recorded from 18 unmedicated patients (8 male, mean age 32.4+/-11.8 years, Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) 15.3+/-7.9) and 18 matched healthy controls, and analysed quantitatively. The mean frequency of EEG background activity and absolute power in delta, theta, alpha and beta frequency bands were calculated. Mean frequency of background activity was significantly lower in patients as compared to controls (-1.44/s, p<0.01), predominantly for the frontal electrode positions. Power spectra revealed increased delta- and decreased alpha-/beta-power in the group of patients (p<0.05, patients vs. controls). Correlation analyses showed significant positive correlations of EEG-power with the Y-BOCS sub-scores "obsessions", and negative correlations with the sub-scores "compulsions" (Spearman's correlations, r(s)=+0.48 to +0.70, and -0.47 to -0.6, respectively, p<0.05). The data provide evidence of a dysfunction of frontal cortical activity in patients with OCD. The opposite correlations of neurophysiological data and clinical features, i.e. obsessions and compulsions, are suggestive of pathophysiological differences based on the presence of the respective cardinal symptoms of OCD.

Radiation-induced changes of brain tissue after radiosurgery in patients with arteriovenous malformations: correlation with dose distribution parameters.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation of radiation-induced changes of brain tissue after radiosurgery in patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) with treatment planning and dose distribution parameters. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The data from 73 AVM patients with complete follow-up information who underwent stereotactic linear accelerator radiosurgery at our institution between 1993 and 1998 were analyzed. Patients were treated with 11-14 noncoplanar fields shaped by a micromultileaf collimator. A median dose of 19 Gy (range, 13.3-22 Gy) was prescribed to the 80% isodose, which completely encompassed the target. Patients were followed at 3-month intervals the first year and then every 6 months with MRI and neurologic examinations. No patient developed radiation necrosis. The end point of radiation-induced tissue changes on follow-up neuroimaging (i.e., edema, blood-brain barrier breakdown [BBBB], and edema and/or BBBB combined) was evaluated. Each end point was further differentiated into four levels with respect to the extent of the image change (i.e., small, intermediate, large, and very large). The correlation of each end point was investigated for several treatment planning parameters, including prescribed dose and the absolute size of the AVM target volume. In addition, a number of dose-volume variables were calculated from each patient's dose distribution in the brain, including the mean dose to a specified volume of 16 and 20 cm(3) that was given the highest dose (Dmean16 and Dmean20, respectively), and the absolute and percentage of brain volume (including the AVM target) receiving a dose of at least 8, 10, and 12 Gy (V8-V12, and V8(rel)-V12(rel), respectively). These parameters were also determined excluding the AVM target volume from the considered volume (subscript "excl"). The correlation of all treatment planning and dose-volume parameters with outcome was assessed in univariate Cox proportional hazards models. The results were assessed by p values (statistical significance for p < or =0.05), residual deviance (ResDev) of the fits, and odds ratios. RESULTS: The prescribed dose was not predictive of outcome (p >0.05 for all end points). The AVM target volume correlated significantly with large edema, as well as large edema and/or BBBB. V12 and Dmean20 were significantly associated with all end points, except very large edema and large BBBB. Patients with V12 of 27.6 cm(3) (Dmean20 of 18.9 Gy) had a 2.8-fold (fourfold) higher risk of developing edema and/or BBBB with large extent than those with V12 of 4.2 cm(3) (Dmean20 of 8.4 Gy). For all end points, V12(rel) correlated worse with outcome compared with V12 (e.g., end point of large edema and/or BBBB: ResDev = 85.8 and 86.5 for V12 and V12(rel), respectively). Excluding the AVM target volume from the considered irradiated volume led to only small changes in the resulting correlations (e.g., end point of small edema and/or BBBB: ResDev = 99.0 and 98.7 for V12 and V12(excl), respectively, and ResDev = 96.1 and 96.1 for Dmean20 and Dmean20(excl), respectively). Throughout the analysis, V8-V12, Dmean20, and Dmean16 yielded similar results and none of these parameters could be favored over the others. CONCLUSION: Radiation-induced changes of brain tissue after AVM radiosurgery can be well predicted by single dose distribution parameters that are a function of both dose and volume. These can be used to quantify dose-volume response relations. Studies of this nature will eventually help to improve our current understanding of the mechanisms leading to radiation-induced tissue changes after AVM radiosurgery and to optimize radiosurgery treatment planning.

Activated inflammatory T cells correlate with lesion size in human cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is an important parasitic disease affecting millions worldwide. In attempts to understand the clinical relevance of immunological measurements as determined using flow cytometry, several immunological phenotypes were determined for a group of well defined human leishmaniasis patients and correlated with clinical measurements of the disease (Montenegro skin test (MST) and lesion area). The analysis demonstrated a positive correlation between the MST size and the frequency of ex vivo recent activated CD4(+) T cells. In contrast, higher frequencies of recent activated CD8(+) T cells were correlated with a smaller MST size. Moreover, a positive correlation was observed between the lesion total area and the frequency of activated CD69(+) (ex vivo) and CD40L(+) (cultured with Leishmania soluble antigen (SLA)) T lymphocytes. Finally, larger lesions were also correlated with a higher frequency of SLA specific inflammatory cytokine (IFN-gamma or TNF-alpha) producing lymphocytes. These studies demonstrate that immunological markers are correlated with clinical indicators of human leishmaniasis and serve to better understand the evolution of this important parasitic disease.

Correlation between EMG and COP onset latency in response to a horizontal platform translation.

This study examined the relationship between onset latencies estimates from EMG and center of pressure (COP) in young (five female, five male; mean=24.2+/-2.3 years) and older (six female, four male; 78.4+/-2.3 years) subjects during anterior or posterior platform translations. The latencies to onset of activity were estimated for the tibialis anterior (TA; mean=119.8 ms across both age groups) and COP (mean=139.7 ms across both groups) for anterior translations, and the soleus (SOL; mean=122.4 ms across both groups), gastrocnemius (GAS; mean=126.0 ms for young, and 115.9 ms for old subjects) and COP (mean=160.0 ms across both groups) for posterior translations. Average within-subject correlations (r') among these measures showed a high correlation between TA and COP onset latency (r'=0.667, young; r'=0.482, old), and relatively low correlations between the plantar flexors (SOL and GAS) and COP onset latencies (SOL: r'=0.292 for young, r'=0.249 for old; GAS: r'=0.126 for young, r'=0.143 for old). The SOL and GAS onset latencies correlated well with each other, especially in the older subjects (r'=0.762), suggesting that the contribution of two muscles creates some variability in the relationship with COP onset latency. The strong correlation between TA and COP for anterior perturbations, coupled with the weaker correlations for the plantar flexors suggest that the COP method may be preferable for studies interested in determining timing of postural responses to multidirectional perturbations.

Virologic therapy response significantly correlates with the number of active drugs as evaluated using a LiPA HIV-1 resistance scoring system.

BACKGROUND: Resistance testing is increasingly accepted as a tool in guiding the selection of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) antiretroviral therapy in HIV-1 infected individuals who fail their current regimen. OBJECTIVES: To descriptively compare the correlation between virologic treatment response and results using three genotypic HIV-1 drug resistance interpretation systems: the VERSANT HIV-1 Resistance Assay (LiPA) system and two sequence-based interpretation systems. STUDY DESIGN: Specimens from 213 HIV-1-infected subjects, either starting (n=104) or switching to (n=109) a regimen of three or four antiretroviral drugs, were collected retrospectively at baseline and after 3 months of uninterrupted therapy. The correlation between viral load change and the number of predicted active drugs in the treatment regimen was assessed. An interpretation algorithm was recently developed to process VERSANT HIV-1 Resistance Assay (LiPA) data. The number of active drugs predicted using this algorithm was rank correlated with the viral load change over a 3-month treatment period. For comparison, a similar calculation was made using two sequence-based algorithms (REGA version 5.5 and VGI GuideLines Rules 4.0), both applied on the same sequences. RESULTS: Statistically significant (p<0.05) correlation coefficients for each of the three HIV-1 drug resistance interpretation systems were observed in the treatment-experienced subjects on a 3-drug regimen (-0.39, -0.38, and -0.42, respectively) as well as on a 4-drug regimen (-0.33, -0.31, and -0.37, respectively). However, no significant correlation was observed in treatment-naive subjects, probably due to the very low frequency of drug resistance in these subjects. CONCLUSION: All three genotypic drug resistance interpretation systems (LiPA version 1, REGA version 5.5, and VGI GuideLines Rules 4.0) were statistically significantly correlated with virologic therapy response as measured by viral load testing.

Flashing liquid jets and two-phase droplet dispersion I. Experiments for derivation of droplet atomisation correlations.

The large-scale release of a liquid contained at upstream conditions above its local atmospheric boiling point is a scenario often given consideration in process industry risk analysis. Current-hazard quantification software often employs simplistic equilibrium two-phase approaches. Scaled water experiments have been carried out measuring droplet velocity and droplet size distributions for a range of exit orifice aspect ratios (L/d) and conditions representing low to high superheat. 2D Phase-Doppler Anemometry has been utilised to characterise droplet kinematics and spray quality. Droplet size correlations have been developed for non-flashing, the transition between non-flashing and flashing, and fully flashing jets. Using high-speed shadowography, transition between regimes is defined in terms of criteria identified in the external flow structure. An overview companion paper provides a wider overview of the problem and reports implementation of these correlations into consequence models and subsequent validation. The fluid utilised throughout is water, hence droplet correlations are developed in non-dimensional form to allow extrapolation to other fluids through similarity scaling, although verification of model performance for other fluids is required in future studies. Data is reduced via non-dimensionalisation in terms of the Weber number and Jakob number, essentially representing the fluid mechanics and thermodynamics of the system, respectively. A droplet-size distribution correlation has also been developed, conveniently presented as a volume undersize distribution based on the Rosin-Rammler distribution. Separate correlations are provided for sub-cooled mechanical break-up and fully flashing jets. This form of correlation facilitates rapid estimates of likely mass rainout quantities, as well as full distribution information for more rigorous two-phase thermodynamic modelling in the future.

Don't give up on me baby: spousal correlation in smoking behaviour.

We use nine waves of BHPS data to examine interactions between spouses in terms of a behaviour with important health repercussions: cigarette smoking. Correlation between partners' behaviours may be due to correlated effects, as a consequence of matching or information revealed by others' behaviours, or to endogenous effects generated by bargaining within marriage. A simple bivariate probit reveals a positive correlation between own current smoking and partner's past smoking, which is consistent with endogenous effects. However, after controlling for individual effects, we find that own current smoking and partner's past smoking are statistically independent: all of the correlation in smoking status works through the correlation in individual effects. As such the correlation in the raw smoking data is consistent with positive assortative matching in marriage over smoking, rather than bargaining within the couple or social learning.

In vitro evaluation of the effects of candidate immunosuppressive drugs: flow cytometry and quantitative real-time PCR as two independent and correlated read-outs.

BACKGROUND: Immune monitoring may use flow cytometry or molecular biology techniques. Flow cytometry assays cells that are phenotypically characterized, whereas TaqMan RT-PCR starts with RNA extraction from unfractionated heterogeneous cell populations. We therefore wondered how the effects of immunosuppressive drugs on cytokine production in stimulated whole blood, as determined by flow cytometry, would correlate with those obtained with quantitative real-time PCR (TaqMan RT-PCR). METHODS: Blood drawn from naive cynomolgus monkeys was exposed to incremental amounts of cyclosporine (CsA; 300, 600, 900 and 1200 ng/ml) or tacrolimus (TRL; 8, 20, 40 and 80 ng/ml) before lectin stimulation in vitro. Blood was then either stained for CD3, IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-4, and TNF-alpha and analyzed on a flow cytometer with various gating strategies, or submitted to RNA extraction for analysis of the above mentioned cytokines mRNA transcripts using TaqMan RT-PCR. RESULTS: Both methods revealed a parallel dose-dependent inhibition of cytokine production in stimulated blood. The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC(50)'s) ranged from 511-771 ng/ml (CsA) and 15-29 ng/ml (TRL) with flow cytometry, and from 275-529 ng/ml (CsA) and 11-48 ng/ml (TRL) with TaqMan RT-PCR for T-helper 1 cytokines. Both assays correlated well with a Pearson product moment correlation of 0.76. Extending gating from a CD3(+) gate to a lymphocyte gate improved correlation (r = 0.85) for all cytokines investigated (except IL-2; unchanged) whereas further extending gating resulted, to the contrary, in lower correlations. Independent of gating strategy a high correlation (r = 0.97) was observed when drug IC(50)'s were considered. CONCLUSIONS: Flow cytometry and TaqMan RT-PCR may be used interchangeably to monitor the effects of candidate immunosuppressive drugs on cytokine mRNA production in lectin-stimulated whole blood.

Correlation of stylet activities by the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca coagulata (Say), with electrical penetration graph (EPG) waveforms.

Glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca coagulata (Say), is an efficient vector of Xylella fastidiosa (Xf), the causal bacterium of Pierce's disease, and leaf scorch in almond and oleander. Acquisition and inoculation of Xf occur sometime during the process of stylet penetration into the plant. That process is most rigorously studied via electrical penetration graph (EPG) monitoring of insect feeding. This study provides part of the crucial biological meanings that define the waveforms of each new insect species recorded by EPG. By synchronizing AC EPG waveforms with high-magnification video of H. coagulata stylet penetration in artifical diet, we correlated stylet activities with three previously described EPG pathway waveforms, A1, B1 and B2, as well as one ingestion waveform, C. Waveform A1 occured at the beginning of stylet penetration. This waveform was correlated with salivary sheath trunk formation, repetitive stylet movements involving retraction of both maxillary stylets and one mandibular stylet, extension of the stylet fascicle, and the fluttering-like movements of the maxillary stylet tips. Waveform B1 was ubitquious, interspersed throughout the other waveforms. B1 sub-type B1w was correlated with salivation followed by maxillary tip fluttering. This tip fluttering also occurred before and during B1 sub-type B1s, but was not directly correlated with either the occurrence or frequency of this waveform. Waveform B2 was correlated with sawing-like maxillary stylet movements, which usually occurred during salivary sheath branching. Waveform C was correlated with ingestion. Fluid outflow was also observed as a mechanism to clear the maxillary tips from debris during waveform C. This detailed understanding of stylet penetration behaviors of H. coagulata is an important step toward identifying the instant of bacterial inoculation which, in turn, will be applied to studies of disease epidemiology and development of host plant resistance.
