Ultrasound-induced capping of polystyrene on TiO2 nanoparticles by precipitation with compressed CO2 as antisolvent.

In this work, a route for the synthesis of inorganic/polymer core/shell composite nanoparticles was proposed, which can be called the antisolvent-ultrasound method. Compressed CO2 was used as antisolvent to precipitate the polymer from its solution dispersed with inorganic nanoparticles, during which ultrasonic irradiation was used to induce the coating of precipitated polymers on the surfaces of the inorganic nanoparticles. TiO2/polystyrene (PS) core/shell nanocomposites have been successfully prepared using this method. The transmission electronic micrographs (TEM) of the obtained nanocomposites show that the TiO2 nanoparticles are coated by the PS shells, of which the thickness can be tuned by the pressure of CO2. The phase structure, absorption properties, and thermal stability of the composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectra, and thermogravimetry, respectively. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) indicate the formation of a strong interaction between PS and TiO2 nanoparticles in the resultant products. This method has some potential advantages for applications and may be easily applied to the preparation of a range of inorganic/polymer core/shell composite nanoparticles.

Nucleation of polystyrene latex particles in the presence of gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane: functionalized silica particles.

Silica/polystyrene nanocomposite particles with different morphologies were synthesized through emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of silica particles previously modified by gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS). Grafting of the silane molecule was performed by direct addition of MPS to the aqueous silica suspension in the presence of an anionic surfactant under basic conditions. The MPS grafting density on the silica surface was determined using the depletion method and plotted against the initial MPS concentration. The influence of the MPS grafting density, the silica particles size and concentration and the nature of the surfactant on the polymerization kinetics and the particles morphology was investigated. When the polymerization was performed in the presence of an anionic surfactant, transmission electron microscopy images showed the formation of polymer spheres around silica for MPS grafting densities lower than typically 1 micromole x m(-2) while the conversion versus time curves indicated a strong acceleration effect under such conditions. In contrast, polymerizations performed in the presence of a larger amount of MPS moieties or in the presence of a non ionic emulsifier resulted in the formation of "excentered" core-shell morphologies and lower polymerization rates. The paper identifies the parameters that allow to control particles morphology and polymerization kinetics and describes the mechanism of formation of the nanocomposite colloids.

Development of a method for embedded-culture of pig pancreatic islet-like cell clusters in agarose containing maltose-carrying polystyrene (HEVM) and nicotinamide.

A method for embedded-culture of islet-like cell clusters (ICCs) from neonatal pig pancreas is described. The procedure is based on a sequential treatment of the pancreas with a proteolytic enzyme and ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA). During the exposure to EDTA-Dispase, small pieces of pancreas were gradually digested, with gentle stirring. Under- and over-digested pancreatic cell clusters were separated from the pancreatic fragments by filtration, and formed whole islet-like cell clusters in RPMI 1640 containing 11.0 mM D-glucose and 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). The ICCs were embedded in agarose with or without a gel containing a random copolymer hydroxethylmethacrylate-vinylbenzyl maltonamide (HEVM) of hydroxethylmethacrylate-(HEMA)-vinylbenzyl maltonamide (VMA) and nicotinamide. They remained morphologically intact and a physiological response to acute stimulation with glucose was obtained when they were embedded in the agarose containing HEVM and nicotinamide. These findings suggest that ICCs in agarose containing HEVM and nicotinamide could be a useful tool for morphological, biochemical and molecular biological studies, and also as a potential source of material for transplantation.

p-Nonyl-phenol: an estrogenic xenobiotic released from "modified" polystyrene.

Alkylphenols are widely used as plastic additives and surfactants. We report the identification of an alkylphenol, nonylphenol, as an estrogenic substance released from plastic centrifuge tubes. This compound was extracted with methanol, purified by flash chromatography and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography, and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Nonylphenol induced both cell proliferation and progesterone receptor in human estrogen-sensitive MCF7 breast tumor cells. Nonylphenol also triggered mitotic activity in rat endometrium; this result confirms the reliability of the MCF7 cell proliferation bioassay. The estrogenic properties of alkylphenols, specifically nonylphenols, indicate that the use of plasticware containing these chemicals in experimental and diagnostic tests may lead to spurious results, and these compounds as well as alkylphenol polyethoxylates may also be potentially harmful to exposed humans and the environment at large.

Comparison of an indirect format ELISA on modified graphite and polystyrene surfaces against triazines.

An indirect format enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) on graphite rods ( 0.8 mm x 20 mm) and, for comparison, on microtiter plates has been developed against terbuthylazine. For this purpose, a series of 2-aminoalkyl-4-chloro-6-terbuthyl-s-triazine-2,6-diamine ELISA haptens with alkyl spacer lengths of 2, 4, 6, and 8 CH2 groups has been synthesized. The graphite rods or the microtiter plates were covered by a polymerized glutaraldehyde network, and the ELISA haptens have been coupled by imino coupling to the free aldehyde groups of that network. epsilon-Aminocaproic acid has been used as an agent to block unspecific binding sites. The ELISA was run in a competitive mode, where the immobilized ELISA hapten and the solute terbuthylazine as a target analyte compete for the solute antibody.

Optimisation of polystyrene resin-supported Pt catalysts in room temperature, solvent-less, oct-l-ene hydrosilylation using methyldichlorosilane.

Six precursor resins with systematic variation of porous parameters were prepared by suspension polymerisation using specific compositions of divinylbenzene, styrene vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and 2-ethylhexan-l-ol (a porogen). Surface areas from N(2) sorption and BET analysis were approximately 2-170 m(2)g-(1). The VBC content in each case was 38 mol% and these groups were aminated using the sodium salt of trimethylethylene diamine. Pt was introduced onto each resin at three different loadings (approximately 0.03, approximately 0.2 and approximately 0.4 mmol g-(1)) by appropriate manipulation of K(2)PtCl(6). The matrix of 18 resin-supported Pt complexes was then assessed for catalytic activity in the room temperature, solvent-less, hydrosilylation of oct-l-ene using methyldichlorosilane such that alkene: silane: Pt ratio was fixed at 2:1:1x10(-3). Though all the catalysts showed activity lower than that of homogeneous Speier s catalyst, most were sufficiently active to be potentially valuable heterogeneous catalysts in the laboratory, and indeed the plant. The most lightly loaded resins proved to be the least active. The remainder were recycled 5 times, and the best performers, the most highly loaded species, a further 5 times making 10 consecutive uses in all. A strong dependence on the porous structure of the resins was demonstrated with the activity rising systemically with the surface area. The two highest surface area highest loaded species displayed good activity even when used for the tenth time. The level of concurrent alkene isomerisation observed was very low throughout (<1%) making these heterogeneous species very selective as well as highly active. Overall the derived catalysts are excellent candidates for use in the research laboratory, and with further development could also be valuable in continuous processes.
