Tell me a story: the therapeutic metaphor in the practice of pediatric occupational therapy.

In the crafting of therapeutic intervention, pediatric occupational therapists are challenged to provide therapeutic modalities that are as stimulating and imaginative as the child's world, while offering appropriate and meaningful solutions to the child's problems. Storytelling, coupled with the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic stimulation of guided affective imagery, offers a stimulating treatment approach for both the child or adolescent and the occupational therapist. This paper provides an overview of the use of storytelling, metaphorical forms and expressions, and guided affective imagery in occupational therapy with children.

A study of storytelling, humour and learning in medicine.

Story telling is a fundamental part of clinical practice. It provides the mechanism by which doctors and patients communicate and understand the meaning of illness and possible ways of dealing with it. Humour is a particular aspect of story telling and, while there are some negative aspects, generally does have a therapeutic benefit. The physiological effects of laughter are considerable. Both story telling and humour are important for learning and are complementary to the more formal learning from text books and lectures. Stories assist in the development of emotional knowledge. The hypothesis of the contagious theory of behaviour change is presented as a way in which ideas are transmitted from one person to another.

[The aphorisms of Yuhanna ibn Masawaih, physician of the Calif Haroun al-Rashid, and their diffusion to the West].

Jean Mésué, a Nestorian scholar, who practised and taught medicine in Bagdad in the tenth century, composed, besides numerous other works, an anthology of aphorisms, the dissemination of which was really extraordinary. There were 132 aphorisms concerning diseases and their treatment according to the doctor and the patients; some of them expressing home truths still valid today. From the East, Jean Mésué's aphorisms passed to the West where they met with amazing good luck, since the two Latin translations and the French translation were copied, then printed many times from the eleventh to the seventeenth century. It is the history of the handing down of this Arabian medical work that the author proposes to retrace in his communication.

[Gerard van Swieten (1700-1772). A celebrated and faithful disciple of Boerhaave].

This article provides an overview of the life and work of the Dutchman Gerard van Swieten respectively at Leyden and Vienna. He is still well known as the founder of the first Vienna medical school and reformer of the Viennese medical faculty. During the eighteenth century his five volumes containing Commentaries upon the aphorisms of Herman Boerhaave were considered to be the best medical reference work. In his organizational work Van Swieten can be characterized as a medical manager avant la lettre and at the same time as a (brilliant) epigone of his master Boerhaave and the Leyden clinic. In his writings too he closely followed the ideas and papers of Boerhaave and others, and also here he was an epigone, be it a great one. His Commentaria are at the present time still valuable to inform us about the state of the art in eighteenth century medicine. These books really deserve a timely overall study.

[Italian testimony about Maimonides].

As Moses Maimonides' philosophy, validly contributing to both Frederick II's political trend, and Christian theology against the most extremist theses of the Averroists, was introduced into Western Europe, it didn't fail to interest physicians. Thus, starting from the 16th century, some of the author's fundamental texts were read in many Medical Schools of Northern and Central Italy: his Aphorisms especially, which represent a rich selection of sentences drawn from classic and contemporary authors, collected and commented upon by Maimonides himself, anticipated a new wisdom in the scientific field.
