[Comparative analysis of incidence of main risk factors, behavior characteristics and work activity in ischemic heart disease with normolipemia and hyperlipoproteinemia type II and IV].

Examination was conducted of 180 healthy males 35 to 44 years of age, working as leading engineers, and of 174 patients with ischemic heart disease selected according to sex and occupation. A comparative analysis was made of the frequency of the main risk factors and some peculiarities of the labour activity and behaviour of patients with types II and IV hyperlipoproteinemia and those with normal lipid level. It is shown that a combination of known risk factors, behaviour peculiarities and conditions of labour activity is typical of patients with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia, which may promote the development of ischemic heart disease. Patients with normal blood lipid livel merit special attention. Additional factors contributing to the development of ischemic heart disease in these cases should be searched for.

Comparative analysis of the immunophenotypes of decidual and peripheral blood large granular lymphocytes and T cells during early human pregnancy.

PROBLEM: The functional role of the leukocytes in the decidual is not clear. They may regulate the maternal immune response to the fetal allograft. However, the factors controlling maternal and fetal communication have not yet been identified. METHOD: A comparative analysis of the phenotypes of decidual and peripheral blood large granular lymphocytes (LGLs) and T lymphocytes in early human pregnancy was performed on decidual tissue and blood samples obtained from ten patients at therapeutic abortion. RESULTS: Whereas most of the decidual LGLs were found to have a CD56bright++ phenotype, most of the peripheral blood NK cells (90%) showed the classical CD56dim+ phenotype, and only a small proportion were CD56bright+ cells. Another striking difference was found in the expression of very late antigen 1 (VLA-1, CD49a): Almost all the decidual CD56bright++ LGLs, but virtually none of the peripheral blood CD56+ NK cells expressed this antigen. Further differences were found in the expression of CD16, CD44, CD45RA, CD54, and CD57. There were also differences in phenotype between T cells derived from decidual tissue and those derived from peripheral blood. Approximately 31% of the CD3+ decidual T cells expressed VLA-1, but this antigen was virtually absent on peripheral blood T cells. A further difference was seen in the expression of HLA-DR. This activation antigen was found on 32 +/- 13% of the decidual T cells but only 8 +/- 5% of the peripheral blood T cells. Additionally, the proportion of cells expressing CD38 was higher among decidual than peripheral blood T cells. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that both decidual LGLs and a subset of decidual T cells are activated and possibly play a role in the control of trophoblast growth and placental development.

[Endogenous cellular reverse transcriptase in the rat brain. A comparative analysis of the authentic enzyme and recombinant reverse transcriptase coded by a mobile genetic element of the LINE class].

A purified preparation of endogenous RNA-dependent DNA-polymerase (reverse transcriptase) earlier identified in rat brain (Ivanov, V.A., Pakhotin, P.I., Bobkova, N.V., and Ilyin, Yu.V. parallel Dokl. RAN (1992). V. 323, P. 173-177) has been obtained. A comparative analysis of the enzyme and recombinant reverse transcriptase coded by the mobile genome element jockey earlier expressed in a heterological cell system (Ivanov V.V., Melnikov A.A., Siunov A.V., Fodor I.I., Ilyin, Yu.V. parallel EMBO J. (1991), V. 10, P. 2489-2495) has been carried out. Like retroviral RNA-dependent DNA-polymerases, these enzymes show preference for polyribonucleotides and can use poly(rCm) as template. Besides they are inhibited by SH-reagents and require bivalent cations (Mg2+ or Mn2+) and detergent and/or KCl as ionic strength carrier. The enzymes differ drastically from retrovirus reverse transcriptases by a number of catalytic properties (low optima of concentration of requisite cations and ionic strength, strong preference for Mn2+, highly efficiency in using poly(rCm), lack of associated RNase H activity) but exhibit a high degree of similarity among themselves with regard to the above properties. It is suggested that endogenous reverse transcriptase from rat brain is a product of expression of the mobile genome element of the LINE family.

Caries prevalence of young adults in Oslo, Norway, and Porto, Portugal. A comparative analysis.

The purpose of the present study was primarily to establish the oral health status of young adults in the area of Porto, Portugal. The assessment is based on a random sample of 30- to 39-year-olds with criteria identical to those of a Norwegian study of 35-year-olds. This makes it possible also to present a comparative analysis of the caries prevalence in Oslo, Norway, and Porto, Portugal. The results indicate lower DMF scores among the Portuguese (DMFS = 46.2) than the Norwegian (DMFS = 85.0) adults. The difference is primarily due to a greater number of filled surfaces among the Norwegians (FS = 59.7) than the Portuguese (FS = 4.4). However, carious surfaces are more prevalent among Portuguese than Norwegian adults (DS = 9.2 versus DS = 3.3). Both among Portuguese and Norwegian adults, oral hygiene and dental visits seem to play an important role with regard to the prevalence of decayed surfaces. Decayed surfaces were more prevalent among men than women, and a correlation between social status and prevalence of decayed surfaces was present in both societies.

[Comparative analysis of the efficacy of different methods of acupuncture in the hyper- and hypokinetic types of circulation in hypertensive patients].

A series of 103 patients with Stage I--II essential hypertension (76 patients with the hyperkinetic and 36 with the hypokinetic type of circulation) were treated by corporal (according to the method of D. M. Tabeeva, 1978) and combined (corporal-auricular) acupuncture. The comparative analysis of the clinical, mechanocardiographic and rheoencephalographic findings showed that the treatment efficacy depended both on the type of circulation and on the method of acupuncture. The best clinical response was displayed by patients with the hyperkinetic type of circulation treated by the method of corporal acupuncture which was confirmed by the evidence of objective instrumental studies.

Case management. A comparative analysis of the United States and Great Britain.

With the pronounced growth in long-term care in the United States and Great Britain over the last two decades, there has been a quantitative move away from institutional care to community-based home care. This growth has pushed public funding and the delivery of social and health services in the two countries to the limits. This article presents a comparative analysis of the case management systems as they relate to long-term care in both countries. We also make recommendations to strengthen both countries' case management systems.

Diagnostic Value and Limitations of Dermoscopy in Humans and Animals: A Critical Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dermoscopy is a noninvasive imaging technique that is well-established in human dermatology, where it enhances the diagnosis of neoplastic, inflammatory, infectious, and alopecic skin disorders. In veterinary dermatology, its use is expanding yet remains heterogeneous and largely descriptive, despite growing evidence of conserved dermoscopic patterns across species. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To review the applications of dermoscopy in veterinary dermatology, and to provide a comparative analysis of dermoscopic features observed in dogs, cats, and horses in relation to corresponding findings in human dermatology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature reporting dermoscopic findings in veterinary dermatology was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched for studies published up to 30 July 2025. Eligible studies included original articles describing dermoscopic features in dogs, cats, or horses. Extracted data included species, dermatological condition, dermoscopic findings, device type and histopathological correlation, when available. Levels of evidence were assessed using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine criteria. RESULTS: Thirty studies met the inclusion criteria. Most were descriptive case reports or case series. Dermoscopy was applied to a wide range of conditions, including alopecias, parasitic infestations, dermatophytosis, neoplastic and sebaceous lesions, inflammatory dermatoses, and congenital vascular anomalies. Recurrent dermoscopic features showed strong similarities to those described in human dermatology, although species-specific anatomical differences influenced interpretation. CONCLUSIONS: Dermoscopy represents a valuable adjunct diagnostic tool in veterinary dermatology, with clear translational relevance. Standardisation of terminology and further prospective studies are required to support its broader clinical integration.

Cloning and molecular characterization of the secY genes from Bacillus licheniformis and Staphylococcus carnosus: comparative analysis of nine members of the SecY family.

SecY is a central component of the export machinery that mediates the translocation of secretory proteins across the plasma membrane of Escherichia coli. We have cloned and sequenced the secY genes from Bacillus licheniformis and Staphylococcus carnosus. The deduced amino acid sequences are highly homologous to those of other known SecY polypeptides, all having the potential to form 10 transmembrane segments. Comparative analysis of 9 SecY polypeptides, derived from different bacteria, revealed that 14 amino acid positions (2.7%) are identical in all SecY proteins and 89 (16.9%) show conservative changes. Clusters of conserved amino acid residues were found in 4 of the 10 transmembrane segments and 2 of the 6 cytoplasmic domains. It is suggested that the conserved regions might be involved in the translocation activity of SecY or might be required for the correct interaction of SecY with other components of the secretion apparatus.

Intestinal metaplasia and its variants in the gastric mucosa of Portuguese subjects: a comparative analysis of biopsy and gastrectomy material.

The incidence and prevalence of intestinal metaplasia (IM) of three types were investigated in 1,041 endoscopic biopsy specimens collected from patients with gastric abnormalities in 1981 and 1982. Intestinal metaplasia was classified as type I (complete), type II (incomplete, sulfomucin-negative), or type III (incomplete, sulfomucin-positive). Intestinal metaplasia, found in 244 biopsy specimens (23%), was prevalent in gastric carcinoma (65%), compared with the incidence of 18.4 per cent in benign conditions. The sulfomucin-negative types I and II were more common than type III and were present in both benign conditions (98 per cent) and carcinoma (64 per cent). In contrast, type III IM was seen in only 12 per cent of IM-positive biopsy specimens, 90 per cent of which (26 of 29) were from patients with carcinoma. The high specificity of type III IM (98 per cent) might be acceptable for screening purposes, but its sensitivity of 36 per cent for gastric carcinoma is low. Two main factors would seem to account for the low sensitivity, as shown in the comparative analysis of IM types in gastrectomy specimens and the previous biopsy specimens from 93 patients: 1) sampling and 2) the association of type III IM with gastric carcinoma of the intestinal type but not with diffuse gastric carcinoma. The data thus confirm a significant relation between incomplete sulfomucin-secreting IM (type III) and gastric carcinoma of the intestinal type (P less than 0.001). This variant of IM should be considered a risk factor, and its presence in a biopsy specimen should prompt close surveillance.

Optimal nonsurgical treatment of hemorrhoids: a comparative analysis of infrared coagulation, rubber band ligation, and injection sclerotherapy.

Despite an abundance of nonsurgical hemorrhoid therapies, none has been consistently more efficacious. By combining data from multiple clinical trials in a meta-analysis, the present study compared the efficacy and complications of infrared coagulation, injection sclerotherapy, and rubber band ligation to determine the optimal nonoperative hemorrhoid treatment. All published clinical trials comparing the three methods were identified by computer search and review of appropriate English language journals. Five trials studying 863 patients satisfied all inclusion criteria. Results demonstrated that similar numbers of patients were asymptomatic 12 months after treatment, regardless of initial therapy. However, significantly fewer patients undergoing rubber band ligation required additional treatment because symptoms had recurred. Although rubber band ligation demonstrated greater long-term efficacy, it was associated with a significantly higher incidence of posttreatment pain. In contrast, infrared coagulation was associated with both fewer and less severe complications. Thus, when all factors are considered, infrared coagulation may in fact be the optimal nonoperative hemorrhoid treatment.

[Comparative analysis of the antiamnesic action of a blockade of the benzodiazepine-GABA-ionophore complex and of an activation of the dopaminergic system in the brain of mice].

In experiments on mice by the method of conditioned reaction of passive avoidance and amnesia elicited by the animal delay in the dangerous compartment immediately after electrocutaneous stimulation, antiamnestic effect is demonstrated of pharmacological influences, changing the activity of benzodiazepine-GABA-ionophore complex and dopaminergic system. Comparative analysis of the efficiency of neuropharmacological substances of different actions on synaptic apparatus of the studied transmitter systems in amnesia reduction showed that the greatest effect of improving the reproduction of the conditioned habit was that of the bupropion, the highly specific blockator of dopamine reverse absorption. The obtained results testify that amnesia development is based on activation of the inhibitory GABAergic brain processes and disturbance of dopaminergic system functioning.

Limiting intrusion-social control of outsiders in a healing community: an illustration of qualitative comparative analysis.

The analytic shceme of "limiting intrusion" was generated in this study, using research strategies that involved direct contact with subjects under natural living conditions. Data were collected in an experimental treatment community for diagnosed schizophrenics, where conventional psychiatric control structures are muted and denied. Approximately 200 hours of field observation, in-depth interviews with staff members, and documents related to the setting formed the data base. Qualitative comparative analysis is presented in detail to emphasize its relevance to theory building in nursing science.

Comparative analysis of the N-glycans of rat, mouse and human Thy-1. Site-specific oligosaccharide patterns of neural Thy-1, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily.

Protein structure and tissue type are known to influence glycosylation of proteins. We have previously investigated the N-glycans at each of the three glycosylation sites of the cell surface glycoprotein Thy-1 when isolated from rat brain and thymocytes. Here we report a comparative analysis of the site-specific N-glycosylation patterns from rat (Asn 23, 74, 98), mouse (Asn 23, 75, 99) and human (Asn 23, 60, 100) neural Thy-1. Despite considerable differences in amino acid sequence, the results show a remarkable conservation of the pattern of N-glycans at corresponding sites between the three species, as judged by chromatographic comparisons and glycosidase susceptibility. This is particularly marked for sites at Asn 74/75 in rat/mouse and the equivalent site at 60 in human Thy-1, as well as for sites at Asn 98/99 and 100, respectively. The sites at Asn 23 in rat/mouse also contained almost identical glycosylation patterns, but at this site human Thy-1 showed significantly different glycosylation patterns. These site glycosylation patterns are discussed in relation to the likely accessibility of the oligosaccharides for processing. It is known that within a species, the glycosylation of Thy-1 is tissue specific; therefore, this degree of conservation of glycosylation of Thy-1 expressed in the same tissue in different species is all the more striking, given the known variation between species in the amino acid sequence of Thy-1. It is therefore proposed that neural cells have a particular requirement for specific surface carbohydrates and that the Thy-1 polypeptide serves as an appropriate carrier for these structures.

Ontogenetic and comparative analysis of LDH isozymes in the three species of Indian major carp.

Expression patterns of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozyme were investigated in embryonic and post embryonic stages of Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Catla catla using starch gel electrophoresis. Species specific and differential enzyme locus (gene) expression patterns were found in LDH up to 18th hr of study. The isozyme up to 36th hr after fertilization seemed to be completely active and showed electrophoretic patterns very similar to those of the adults. Comparative analysis of the isozyme of the three species permitted species identification even during the embryonic stages when it is impossible to identify on morphological characters only. Also, the genetic studies indicated different taxonomical and evolutionary histories of the species.

[Comparative analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage and transbronchial biopsy in pulmonary sarcoidosis].

This study was carried out in 59 patients with histological evidence of pulmonary sarcoidosis. In all patients, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and transbronchial biopsy (TBB) were performed simultaneously. In histologic specimens of TBB, 24/59 (41%) patients had luminal alveolitis, 36/59 (61%) mural alveolitis, 41/59 (69%) granulomas 11/59 (15%) diffuse fibrosis and 24/59 (41%) focal fibrosis. Cytological examinations of BAL revealed 22/59 (37%) patients without alveolitis, 20/59 (34%) with low intensity alveolitis and 17/59 (29%) with high intensity alveolitis. Comparative analysis of these patients showed the association of the alveolitis in BAL and the mural alveolitis or granulomas in TBB (p less than 0.01). The conclusion of this study is that cytological findings in BAL represent interstitial cells very well.

Trends in morbidity and mortality of hepatic resection for malignancy. A matched comparative analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The authors define more clearly the trends in morbidity and mortality after hepatic resection for malignant disease in matched patient groups during two discrete time periods. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Recent reports have shown improvement in operative morbidity and mortality associated with hepatic resection; however, results often included resections for benign disease and trauma. Furthermore, specific factors contributing to the improvement in operative risks between the last two decades have not been defined. METHODS: A retrospective matched comparative analysis was conducted of patients with primary and metastatic hepatic malignancy resected with curative intent between two periods (1976 to 1980 and 1986 to 1990). Eighty-one patients met our inclusion criteria in the early period; this group was matched with 81 patients from the latter period by the following four parameters: age, gender, type of malignant disease, and extent of resection. Records of these two patient groups were abstracted for clinical presentation, co-morbid factors, operative techniques, and perioperative morbidity and mortality. RESULTS: The authors found a significant decrease in operative morbidity, median perioperative transfusion, and length of hospital stay in the latter period (1986 to 1990). The incidence of postoperative subphrenic abscess and intra-abdominal hemorrhage was significantly lower during this period. Operative mortality rate was similar for both periods, 4.9% and 1.2%, respectively (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Hepatic resection for malignant disease currently can be performed with a low morbidity and mortality in the hands of trained and experienced hepatic surgeons; operative risks of hepatic resection should not deter its application in the treatment of primary and metastatic malignant disease of the liver.

Comparative analysis of the Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich proteins HRP-I, HRP-II and HRP-III in malaria parasites of diverse origin.

Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes (IRBC) synthesize 3 histidine-rich proteins: HRP-I or the knob-associated HRP, HRP-II and HRP-III or SHARP. In order to distinguish these proteins immunochemically we prepared monoclonal antibodies which react with HRP-I, HRP-II and HRP-III, and rabbit antisera against synthetic peptides derived from the HRP-II and HRP-III sequences. A comparative analysis of diverse P. falciparum parasites was made using these antibodies and immunoprecipitation or Western blotting. HRP-I (Mr 80,000-115,000) was identified in all knob-positive P. falciparum parasites including isolates examined directly from Gambian patients. However, this protein was of lower abundance in these isolates and in 6 knob-positive, culture-adapted parasites compared to Aotus monkey-adapted parasites or culture-adapted parasites studied previously. HRP-II (Mr 60,000-105,000) was identified in all P. falciparum parasites regardless of knob-phenotype, and was recovered from culture supernatants as a secreted water-soluble protein. Within IRBC, HRP-II was found as a complex of several closely spaced bands. Cell surface radio-iodination of IRBC from several isolates and immunoprecipitation with a rabbit antiserum against the HRP-II repeat sequence identified HRP-II as a surface-exposed protein. Like HRP-I, the abundance of HRP-II was lower in the Gambian isolates than with Aotus monkey-adapted parasites studied earlier. Neither HRP-I nor HRP-II were identified in a knob-positive isolate of P. malariae collected from a Gambian patient. Analogues of these HRP were also absent from asexual parasites of diverse primate and murine malaria species screened with this panel of antibodies. HRP-III (Mr 40,000-55,000) was distinguished by its lower apparent size and by specific reaction with rabbit antibody against its 5-mer repeat sequence. HRP-III was of lowest abundance compared with the other two HRP. These antibody reagents and distinguishing properties should prove useful in studies on the separate functions of the 3 P. falciparum HRP.

Blunt trauma in adults and children: a comparative analysis.

Trauma remains the major cause of death in children and young adults. Adult and pediatric patients differ significantly in both mechanism of and physiologic response to injury. We reviewed the records of all consecutive adult and pediatric blunt trauma patients admitted to a major metropolitan trauma center for a 10-year period. An extensive computerized database has been maintained for all patients since 1977. A comparative statistical analysis of mechanism of injury, specific organ injury, and clinical outcome was performed. Altogether, 1,722 adults and 289 children were treated during the study period. Blunt trauma accounted for 82.8% of adult and 94.3% of pediatric injury (p = 0.00005), and only these patients were considered for analysis. Diagnostic peritoneal lavage was performed in 249 children and 1,464 adults, with a respective accuracy of 99.6% and 97.2%. Mechanism of injury was comparable for both groups, although children were far more likely to be injured by falls, bicycle accidents, or struck by an automobile. Comparative analysis of specific injuries demonstrated significantly fewer pediatric chest (p = 0.001), spine (p = 0.03), and pelvic (p = 0.003) injuries. Central nervous system (CNS) injury in children was a strong determinant of outcome: serious pediatric CNS trauma was associated with a tenfold increase in mortality. Mortality for children in the absence of CNS injury was less than 3%. Spinal injury also appeared to be a predictor of poor outcome in the pediatric population, with an associated mortality of greater than 50%. Overall, survival was age independent (82.5% of adults and 85.8% of children were survivors.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
