THE AKR THYMIC ANTIGEN AND ITS DISTRIBUTION IN LEUKEMIAS AND NERVOUS TISSUES.

A clear-cut serological differentiation between AKR lymphocytes of thymic and non-thymic origin is reported: these two cell types are antigenically distinct. In newborn mice, the AKR thymic antigen was found at a high concentration only in thymus. In adult mice, the antigen was present at a high level in thymus, all nervous tissues tested, and some leukemias. It was present at much lower levels in lymph node lymphocytes, splenic lymphocytes, appendix, lung, and certain other leukemias, which appeared to be of non-thymic origin. The AKR thymic antigen was present at a high level in thymus and nervous tissues of RF mice, but was absent from thymocytes of sixteen other mouse strains. These sixteen strains possessed the C3HeB/Fe thymic antigen. The distribution of this antigen in neonatal and adult tissues of the strains tested was similar to that of the AKR thymic antigen in AKR mice. No exceptions were found. These results were obtained by use of immune cytolysis, and of a new method for the quantitative treatment of data from absorption experiments.

CHROMOSOME ABERRATIONS: THEIR ROLE IN THE ETIOLOGY OF MURINE LEUKEMIA.

If the association between chromosome aberrations and leukemia is a causal one, the aberrations should be present before the appearance of tumor. In a virus-induced murine leukemia in which the pre- and early leukemic stages were defined, aneuploidy was observed only during the later stages of the disease. This suggests that the chromosome alteration results from, rather than initiates, the neoplastic transformation.

MOLONEY VIRUS-INDUCED LEUKEMIAS OF MICE: MEASUREMENT IN VITRO OF SPECIFIC ANTIGEN.

A modified test for cytotoxic antibody may be used to measure antibody directed against the tumor-specific antigen of leukemias of mice induced by Moloney virus; cell death is detected by liberation of (51)Cr. An inhibition test based on this technique permits accurate measurement of tumor-specific antigen in cells and subcellular fractions.

SIGNAL DETECTION IN FIXED-RATIO SCHEDULES.

A psychophysical choice technique can be used to measure discrimination of the stimuli produced by two fixed-ratio schedules. As the difference between the two ratios is reduced, the number of errors in discrimination increases. The analysis differentiates between discrimination and response bias, which are frequently confused in animal psychophysics.

EATOMETER: A DEVICE FOR CONTINUOUS RECORDING OF FREE-FEEDING BEHAVIOR.

Minor modifications of a commercially available food cup permit automatic recording of a rat's contacts with common dry food. It is thus possible to measure the frequency and duration of the "meals" that rats take over extended periods of time, and, in conjunction with existing devices for measuring drinking, to record contingencies between eating and drinking.

IMMUNIZATION AGAINST RAUSCHER MOUSE LEUKEMIA WITH TISSUE CULTURE MATERIAL.

Long-term monolayer cultures of mouse thymus and spleen cells, chronically infected with Rauscher virus, showed only a very attenuated leukemia-producing capacity. Material from these cultures prepared from normal BALB/ c mouse tissue was used to immunize isologous mice against subsequent challenge with fully active Rauscher virus. The centrifuged supernatant of the culture had some immunizing properties. However, the most efficient protectionwas obtained when cell suspensions from these cultures were used in the form of a series of three intraperitoneal and intramuscular injections and onebooster injection.
