[Effect of meat prepared by SHF energy and infrared rays on the secretory function of the stomach].

Tests set up on dogs with isolated Pavlov's pouch showed that meat treated with UHF, IR, UHF+UR-energy causes a more abundant gastric secretion than does cooked meat, and when processed with the UR-radiation the ensuing secretion is even superior to that in response to fried meat. In dogs with an isolated Heidenhein's pouch the secretion in response to meat processed with IR and IR and SHF+IR-energy is more intensive than in the case of cooked meat. There was no such difference in the case of the SHF-treated meat. Under the effect of the SHF, IR and SHF+IR-energy processed meat it is chiefly the I phase of the gastric secretion that gains in intensity with a tendency towards an increase in the II phase. The total acidity and the free HCl content in the gastric juice secreted in response to this meat did not undergo any substantial changes. The secretion of total proteinases with the gastric juice per unit time (1 hour) increases over that in the case of cooked meat.

[Clinical and experimental studies on the treatment of severe facioplegia with compressing drug, acupuncture and infrared rays].

In 160 patients with severe facioplegia detected by the strength-duration curve, partial or complete reaction of degeneration of the facial nerve and its related muscles occurred in 158 patients and no reaction of degeneration in 2 patients. All the patients were arbitrarily divided into 2 groups. One group of 62 patients was treated with the regimen 1: Mianmasan adding acupuncture and the other of 98 patients with the regimen 2: modified Mianmasan adding acupuncture and red lighting. The treatment concretely was an application method by dusting the Mianmasan, over the scarified skin corresponding to the selected acupoints and motor points, and finally stick a piece of adhesive plaster on them. The clinical experiment was carried out by using double contrast method, i.e., autogenous and allogenic contrasts with ear pulse wave and skin temperature records. It was confirmed that the affected side of the face had chronic tissue ischemia and returned to normal after treatment. The results showed that among 160 treated patients, 70(43.8%) were cured, 46 (28.7%) markedly improved, 43 (26.9%) improved and 1 (0.6%) remained ineffective. By the statistical analysis, it was demonstrated that the curative effect of regimen 2 was superior to that of regimen 1 (P less than 0.01), and the effective rate in the patients with partial reaction of degeneration was higher than that in those with complete reactcon of degeneration (P less than 0.05).

Development of agents for reinforcement of fluorescence on near-infrared ray excitation for immunohistological staining.

Fluorescence intensity of indocyanine green (ICG) derivative (ICG-sulfo-OSu) was too low for its use to detect microlesions. Therefore, we examined the effects of reinforcement agents on ICG-sulfo-OSu labeled antibodies. Solutions of distearoylphosphatic acid sodium salt (DSPA) and octylglucoside (OG) in physiological phosphate buffered saline (PBS) were found to increase the intensity of fluorescence of ICG-sulfo-OSu labeled antibodies, with shift in the fluorescence peak wavelength from 804 to 821 nm.

Estimation of the degree of crystallinity in digoxin by X-ray and infrared methods.

The X-ray procedure for estimation of the degree of crystallinity in digoxin is based upon measurement of the total X-ray scattering and the scattering from crystalline regions of the drug. The infrared procedures are based upon measurement of the peak height ratios, 1775/1618 and 3095/1618 cm-1. Correlation between results obtained by the two methods is good. These methods are of value in the physico-chemical characterization of digoxin, particularly as the properties may be altered by comminution.

Biological activities caused by far-infrared radiation.

Contrary to previous presumption, accumulated evidence indicates that far-infrared rays are biologically active. A small ceramic disk that emits far-infrared rays (4-16 microns) has commonly been applied to a local spot or a whole part of the body for exposure. Pioneering attempts to experimentally analyze an effect of acute and chronic radiation of far-infrared rays on living organisms have detected a growth-promoting effect in growing rats, a sleep-modulatory effect in freely behaving rats and an insomiac patient, and a blood circulation-enhancing effect in human skin. Questionnaires to 542 users of far-infrared radiator disks embedded in bedclothes revealed that the majority of the users subjectively evaluated an improvement of their health. These effects on living organisms appear to be non-specifically triggered by an exposure to far-infrared rays, which eventually induce an increase in temperature of the body tissues or, more basically, an elevated motility of body fluids due to decrease in size of water clusters.

Intraoral infrared color photography of radiotherapy patients.

A clinical screening study was performed in which head-and-neck radiotherapy patients were photographed intraorally using infrared "false color" film and Ektachrome color film. These photographs were compared to determine if differences existed in appearance between the intraoral tissues within the field of radiation and those intraoral tissues not in the field of radiation. No differences could be detected with either the "false color" film or with Ektachrome color film. Further investigations in the use of infrared color photography as applied to the radiotherapy patient could be undertaken by using a light source that transmits infrared rays only and a lens filter that passes only infrared rays. This method would produce a film that shows only the reflected infrared rays. Both color and black-and-white film should be used in this study.

[NHN]+ hydrogen bonding in protonated 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-2,7-dimethoxynaphthalene. X-ray diffraction, infrared, and theoretical ab initio and DFT studies.

Structural (X-ray diffraction), infrared spectroscopic, and theoretical MP2 and DFT studies on the HBr and DBr adducts of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)2,7-dimethoxynaphthalene ((CH3O)2.DMAN) were performed. This particular proton sponge has been chosen for its strong basicity and display of the buttressing effect influencing the hydrogen bond dynamics and properties. The studies revealed a symmetric, planar DMAN.H+ cation with a short (NHN)+ hydrogen bond of 2.567(3) A. The X-ray diffraction results suggest that the proton is in the central position in the bridge, while the calculations show two potential energy minima with the zero point energy level close to the top of the barrier. The infrared spectra display an (NHN)+ band at 488 cm(-1) and an (NDN)+ band at 235 cm(-1), respectively. It gives the isotopic ratio of 2.08, the highest value reported to date. Such a result suggests a peculiar shape of the potential for the proton motion, characterized by an extremely high positive anharmonicity. The calculations reproduce this particular potential, yielding an ISR value displaying a very good agreement with the experimental one. The anharmonic frequencies, however, show the discrepancy between the observed and calculated transitions.

The principles of infrared-x-ray pump-probe spectroscopy. Applications on proton transfer in core-ionized water dimers.

In this paper we derive the basic physics underlying infrared-x-ray pump-probe spectroscopy (IR, infrared). Particular features of the spectroscopy are highlighted and discussed, such as dependence on phase of the infrared pulse, duration and delay time of the x-ray pulse, and molecular orientation. Numerical applications are carried out for the water dimer using wave packet techniques. It is shown that core ionization of the donor oxygen of the water dimer results in a drastic change of the potential with the global minimum placed in the proton transfer region. The results of the modeling indicate that IR-x-ray pump-probe spectroscopy can be used to study the dynamics of proton transfer in this core-ionized state, and that, contrary to conventional core level photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray core-ionization driven by an IR field is a proper method to explore the proton transfer in a system like the water dimer. We observe that the trajectory of the nuclear wave packet in the ground state potential well is strongly affected by the absolute phase of the IR pulse.

Polymorphic differences in alpha- and beta-form crystals of 2R, 4S, 6-fluoro-2-methyl-spiro[chroman-4,4'-imidazoline]-2',5-dione (M79175) as determined by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry.

Polymorphic differences in alpha- and beta-form crystals of 2R, 4S, 6-fluoro-2-methyl-spiro[chroman-4,4'-imidazoline]-2',5-dione (M79175; 1) were studied by X-ray diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray powder diffraction indicated the longest spacing of the unit cells to be 14.9 and 12.4 A for the alpha- and beta-form crystals, respectively. The infrared spectra showed the absorption band assigned to NH streching vibration for the alpha-form crystals to be centered at 3250 cm-1 and that for the beta-form crystals to split into two peaks, at 3150 and 3425 cm-1. The enthalpies of fusion were 26.3 kJ/mol at 517.5 K and 31.3 kJ/mol at 501.0 K, respectively. Transformation from the beta- to alpha-form was observed at various heating rates, which were enhanced by the presence of a small amount of alpha-form crystals previously added to the beta-form. The former appeared to serve as a source of nuclei for the growth of both forms. These results confirm that the alpha-form crystal is more stable than the beta-form.

The effect of grinding of human dentine examined by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and electron microscopy.

Analysis of human dentine by infrared spectrophotometry suggests that ball-grinding may result in damage of the apatite crystallites. The present study includes further assessments of this effect by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. Each of three coarse-ground dentine samples (Group I) was divided into three portions of 30 mg. One of these portions was ball-ground for approximately 1 min (Group II), the second portion for 6 min (Group III), and the third portion for 23 min (Group IV). The 002 reflection showed line broadening, most marked from Group II to III. Electron microscopy showed a gradual change in crystallite appearance with increased grinding, most pronounced from Group II to III. These observations indicate that by prolonged grinding a limit is approached where no further changes in the crystallites occur. Electron microscopy also indicated that fracture of the crystallites might have occurred. This was probably accompanied by strains in the lattice. The infrared spectra indicated that no breakdown of the apatite structure had occurred during the entire grinding.
