Selecting internally consistent physicochemical properties of organic compounds.

Methods are presented for selecting values of chemical properties of vapor pressure, water solubility, Henry's law constant, and octanol-water and octanol-air partition coefficients, which are subject to thermodynamic constraints, while taking advantage of all measurements. The aim of the mathematical procedures is to find the one set of internally consistent partitioning parameters that is minimally divergent from the experimental values. Information about the reliability or uncertainty of reported values can be accounted for by weighing factors. A similar approach is applied to the temperature dependence of these properties. The influence of partial miscibility of the octanol-water system is discussed and a correction is suggested for this effect. The selection method is applied to 50 mostly aromatic chemicals for which multiple measured partitioning data are available. The resulting sets of consistent property data are presented and discussed.

The Psychopathology Instrument for Mentally Retarded Adults. Internal consistencies and relationship to behaviour problems.

The Psychopathology Instrument for Mentally Retarded Adults, a recently developed, empirically derived measure of psychiatric disturbance for the mentally handicapped, gives a total of eight scales which correspond to DSM-III diagnostic categories. This paper reports its psychometric properties in a British population and the psychometric properties of three scales derived by factor analysis. The internal consistencies of the scales were only barely acceptable in this sample and less acceptable than in previous studies.

Internal consistency of the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ).

We examined the consistency reliability of the widely used Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ). In total, 587 questionnaires from a random sample of the general population were analysed. The 6 items of the Seasonality Scale Index (SSI) correlated fairly well, and consequently this scale proved to have a high internal consistency (alpha = 0.82). Items from the SSI that measure seasonal variations in sleep and weight were consistent with other SPAQ scales that also measure these dimensions. Since the questionnaires analysed were from an epidemiological study, the high consistency reliability shows that the symptoms probed for by the SSI, tend to cluster in susceptible individuals in the general population.

Psychometric properties of resting anterior EEG asymmetry: temporal stability and internal consistency.

We examined whether resting anterior electroencephalographic (EEG) asymmetry in the alpha frequency band has psychometric properties that would be expected of a measure assessing individual differences. In each of two experimental sessions, separated by three weeks, resting EEG in midfrontal and anterior temporal sites was recorded from 85 female adults during eight 60-s baselines. Resting alpha asymmetry demonstrated acceptable test-retest stability and excellent internal consistency reliability. Analyses including other frequency bands indicated that degree of stability varied somewhat as a function of band and region. In addition, asymmetry was less stable than absolute power. Discussion focuses on the implications of the present findings for the measurement and conceptualization of resting anterior asymmetry.

Structure and internal consistency of a shoulder model.

A three-dimensional biomechanical model of the shoulder is developed for force predictions in 46 shoulder structures. The model is directed towards the analysis of static working situations where the load is low or moderate. Arbitrary static arm postures in the natural shoulder range may be considered, as well as different kinds of external loads including different force and moment directions. The model can predict internal forces for the shoulder muscles, for the glenohumeral, the acromioclavicular and the sternoclavicular joint as well as for the coracohumeral ligament. A solution to the statistically indeterminate force system is obtained by minimising an objective function. The default function chosen for this is the sum of the squared muscle stresses, but other objective functions may be used as well. The structure of the model is described and its ingredients discussed. The internal consistency of the model, its structural stability and the compatibility of the elements that go into it, is investigated.

[Study of the reliability, validity and internal consistency of the LSP scale (Life Skills Profile). Profile of activities of daily living].

The LSP scale (Life Skills profile) has been recently translated and adapted into Spanish language. Its has 39 items and attempts to measure the chronic mental patient functioning in situations and tasks of everyday life. It is brief, jargon free, capable of completion by family members, community housing managers as well as professional staff. Reliability, concurrent validity and internal consistency of this Spanish version are reported. The good performance of LSP in all this measurements give support to its use in research and clinical settings.

Factor structure, concurrent validity, and internal consistency of the Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition in a sample of college students.

We examined the psychometric properties of the Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition (BDI-II) [Beck et al., 1996, San Antonio: The Psychological Corporation]. Four hundred fourteen undergraduate students at two public universities participated. A confirmatory factor analysis supported the BDI-II two-factor structure measuring cognitive-affective and somatic depressive symptoms. In addition, the internal consistency was high and the concurrent validity of the BDI-II was supported by positive correlations with self-report measures of depression and anxiety. These findings replicate prior research supporting the validity and reliability of the BDI-II in a college sample.

The Verbal Behavior Assessment Scale (VerBAS): construct validity, reliability, and internal consistency.

A questionnaire, the Verbal Behavior Assessment Scale, was developed to assess the communicative functions of individuals with developmental disabilities and severe mental handicap. To assess its psychometric characteristics, the questionnaire, comprising 15 items, was administered to pairs of caregivers of 115 participants. Exploratory factor analysis, involving 11 more participants, revealed satisfactory evidence concerning the distinction of three different communicative functions with the present sample. The questionnaire had good levels of interrater reliability and internal consistency.

Form E of the 16PF and adults with mental retardation: internal consistency and validity.

Form E of the Sixteen Personality Factors Questionnaire (16PF-E) was administered to 70 adults (45 men and 25 women) who resided in a public facility for mentally retarded persons. Alpha coefficients were computed for each of 16 primary trait scales. The Intelligence (B), Ego Strength (C), Dominance (E), Superego Strength (G), Parmia (H), Protension (L), Autia (M), Shrewdness (N), Guilt Proneness (O), and Self-Sentiment (Q3) scales exhibited low internal consistency, whereas Premsia (I) and Self-Sufficiency (Q2) evidence relatively higher levels. Personality traits of subjects were also assessed by staff ratings. Ratings were compared to 16PF-E primary and secondary trait scores via correlation coefficients. Results provided virtually no support for the validity of the 16PF-E primary scales and the Exvia, Anxiety, and Cortertia secondary factors as applied to the subject population. Limited support for the validity of the Independence secondary factor was found.

[The internal consistency and content validity of the Spanish version of the Asthma Autonomy Questionnaire].

The Asthma Autonomy Questionnaire (AAQ) was designed to evaluate asthmatics' desire to learn about their disease and to make decisions. The AAQ consists of 26 items distributed in two scales: Preferences in the Search for Information (PSI, 8 items) and Preferences in Decision Making (PDM, 6 general items and 12 related to 3 scenarios depicting asthma in stable phase, during mild exacerbation and during severe exacerbation). The aim of this study was to analyze the internal consistency (Cronbach's-coefficient) and content validity (factorial analysis of principal components) of the AAQ. After translation and back translation, the Spanish version of the AAQ was administered to 115 adult asthmatics of both sexes and differing levels of severity. The alpha coefficients for the two scales and 3 scenarios ranged from 0.42 (PSI) to 0.73 (stable phase scenario); only for the stable-phase scenario were values high or statistically acceptable. Factorial analysis reproduced the content of the scales only approximately, with some items proving to relate to factors that were different from the scale they originally belonged to. These results indicate that, in its current formulation, the AAQ presents important measurement problems and revision is advisable.

Internal consistency reliability and construct validity of an Arabic translation of the shortened form of the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales.

A sample of 480 (246 boys and 234 girls) students in Grade 11 in the United Arab Emirates completed an Arabic version of the shortened form of the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales. A factor analysis of the intercorrelations of responses to 51 items indicated the same general factors as in the original study. Internal consistency estimates of the reliability of scores on the total scale and on each scale for the short form were acceptable, with coefficients alpha ranging from .72 to .89.

Internal consistency of NMR data obtained in partially aligned biomacromolecules.

A method of testing structure-related NMR data prior to structure calculations is presented. The test is applicable to second rank tensor interactions (dipolar coupling, anisotropic chemical shielding, and quadrupolar interaction) observed in partially aligned samples of biomacromolecules. The method utilizes the fact that only limited number of frequencies corresponding to the mentioned interactions can be measured independently in a rigid fragment of the macromolecule. Additional values can be predicted as linear combinations of the set of independent frequencies. Internal consistency of sufficiently large sets of frequencies measured in individual molecular fragments is tested by comparing the experimental data with their predicted values. The method requires only knowledge of local geometry (i.e., definition of the interaction tensors in the local coordinate frames of the fragments). No information about the alignment or shape of the molecule is required. The test is best suited for planar fragments. Application to peptide bonds and nucleic acid bases is demonstrated.

[Internal consistency and reliability of Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCATool-Brasil) for child health services].

Health strategies based on primary health care have been expanding in Brazil. An instrument applied to users, the Primary Care Assessment Tool (the PCATool), which measures the extent of primary care, has been validated in the United States. We sought to adapt the PCATool to Brazil and analyze its validation and reliability through a cross-sectional validation study of the Child PCATool. Validation included: translation, back-translation, adaptation, debriefing, content and construct validate, internal consistency, and reliability analysis. The questionnaire was applied to 468 parents or guardians of children registered with 18 primary health services in Porto Alegre, representing the services' normal pediatric population. Using factor analysis, 8 domains were identified, with Cronbach's aranging from 0.74 to 0.88. Validation resulted in a 45-item scale, divided into 8 attributes (Access to First Contact, Continuity, Coordination, 3 attributes of Comprehensiveness, Community Orientation, and Family Orientation). These results showed that the PCATool-Brasil has adequate validity and reliability and could be used as a national instrument to evaluate primary health care after its application to other population settings in the country.

[Internal consistency and validity of work disability duration].

In this study results of a survey taken of persons insured under the public health care system were presented. The main objective of the survey was to determine the health of the insured on the basis of their subjective data, as well as to assess their prevention behaviour and their wish that the health insurance should offer prevention programmes. In addition, the health insurance provided data on how often the insured persons were unable to work for health reasons during a period of seven years. The data of work absenteeism are used to divide the group of respondents according to their health. To determine internal consistency it was first investigated whether persons with periods of disablement during one year (cross-section) also had long periods of disablement in the years before or after (longitudinal section). It was found that in the cross-section, persons with serious health problems (more than six weeks of disablement) differed little from those with average disablement periods (from one to six weeks) in the long-term development of disablement. The study also examined the correlation of periods of disablement and subjective data (validity). A mean correlation was found between the respondents' subjective assessment of their health and the length of disablement periods. There was also a significant negative correlation between internal health locus of control beliefs and the length of disablement. The results are discussed, and the ways and limits of using periods of disablement for empirical studies are presented.

Internal consistency of a Brazilian version of the unified Huntington's disease rating scale.

We evaluated the reliability of a translated Brazilian version of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) to establish the reproducibility of the scale in a population that differs substantially from that on which the scale was originally validated. After a training period with the video and guidelines requested from the Huntington Study Group, we applied the UHDRS, except for the cognitive tests, to a group of 21 Brazilian patients with a molecular diagnosis of Huntington's disease (HD). We found a high degree of internal consistency of the motor section of the UHDRS (Cronbach's alpha= 0.841). There was a negative correlation between the total motor score and the functional assessment, the independence scale and the functional capacity. There was a positive correlation between these 3 scales of functional evaluation and a negative correlation between the age of onset of the disease and the number of CAG repeats. The behavioral scale and disease duration were not correlated with any factor. The clinical characteristics of this sample of patients as described by the UHDRS were roughly similar to those reported in the original validation studies and the correlations described were similar to those reported previously. We conclude that the Brazilian version of the UHDRS is reliable and valid to study patients with HD in the Brazilian setting, that this sample of Brazilian patients had clinical characteristics similar to those observed in other world regions, as expected, and that the clinical training method used for the application of the UHDRS was effective to insure a high degree of clinical reproducibility.

The development and internal consistency of the satisfaction with Antipsychotic Medication Scale.

BACKGROUND: Satisfaction with antipsychotic medication is an important outcome variable. To date, there is a lack of a well-established measure to quantify patient satisfaction with psychiatric medication. This paper describes the development, dimensionality, reliability and validity of the Satisfaction with Antipsychotic Medication (SWAM) scale. METHOD: Clinical and academic experts devised a 33-item Likert scale satisfaction questionnaire. Following a pilot study in a sample of 69 people with schizophrenia, 315 people with schizophrenia on the caseload of local mental health services in three London boroughs completed the questionnaire. The dimensionality, internal consistency and validity of the devised instrument were assessed. RESULTS: Reliability of the SWAM scale was good for subscales and total scores. The alpha coefficient for the two subscales: treatment acceptability and medication insight were 0.92 and 0.84 respectively. The a coefficient for the SWAM scale total score was 0.91 and ranged from 0.92 to 0.90. CONCLUSION: Testing of the psychometric properties of the SWAM scale demonstrate that it is a reliable instrument for measuring patient satisfaction with antipsychotic medication. The measure could be used in routine clinical practice in mental health services to assess patient satisfaction with psychiatric medication.

Validity, internal consistency, and test/retest reliability of a localization disabilities and handicaps questionnaire.

Psychometric evaluations were performed on a self-perceived localization disabilities and handicaps questionnaire. Twenty individuals with normal hearing bilaterally, twenty with profound unilateral hearing impairment (UHI), and ten with any degree of bilateral hearing impairment participated. Each subject completed the questionnaire. Comparisons of the responses of the subjects with normal hearing and those with UHI revealed significant differences among the groups for both disabilities and handicaps, establishing construct validity. Cronbach's Alpha correlational analyses of the responses of all subjects with hearing impairment revealed correlations of .900 (disabilities) and .800 (handicaps), establishing internal consistency. Each participant with hearing impairment was asked to complete the questionnaire again after three weeks. Pearson's correlational analyses of the responses at time one versus time two revealed correlations of .900 (disabilities) and .700 (handicaps), establishing test/retest reliability. This questionnaire is an appropriate tool for investigating the self-perceived localization disabilities and handicaps of individuals with hearing impairment.

Development, internal consistency and reliability of the Verona Service Satisfaction Scale--European Version. EPSILON Study 7. European Psychiatric Services: Inputs Linked to Outcome Domains and Needs.

BACKGROUND: Satisfaction with mental health services is an important quality and outcome variable. The Verona Service Satisfaction Scale (VSSS) is a well-established method for measuring service satisfaction. AIM: To report the development and reliability study of the European Version of the VSSS (VSSS-EU). METHOD: A sample of people with schizophrenia on the case-load of local mental health services in the five European participating countries was assessed. The VSSS-EU was administered at one site in each country at two points in time. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed and compared between the five sites. RESULTS: The alpha coefficient for the VSSS-EU total score in the pooled sample was 0.96 (95% CI 0.94-0.97) and ranged from 0.92 (95% CI 0.60-1.00) to 0.96 (95% CI 0.93-0.98) across the sites. Test-retest reliability for VSSS-EU total score, pooled over sites, was 0.82 (95% CI 0.78-0.85) and ranged from 0.73 (95% CI 0.6-0.86) to 0.93 (95% CI 0.89-0.97) across the sites. CONCLUSION: VSSS-EU is a reliable instrument for measuring service satisfaction in people with schizophrenia, for use in comparative cross-national research projects and in routine clinical practice in mental health services across Europe.
