[Androgens in women with hirsutism who are referred for electroepilation].

The androgen status was determined in 105 women with hirsutism. Raised values of at least one androgenic hormone was found in 58 women, most frequently free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate and delta-4-androstendion. No significant correlation was found between the androgen level and the degree of hirsutism or the frequency of disturbances of menstruation apart from amenorrhoea. Fifty-three women were examined at least six months after the electroepilation therapy. Significant decrease in the degree of hirsutism and the frequency of self-treatment were found together with great satisfaction with the result of treatment.

[The most frequent complications during long-term corticotherapy].

In 274 outpatients with chronic spastic bronchitis long-term treatment with corticosteroids was used due to their clinical condition. In patients treated for 6 years with daily doses of 1-2 mg of prednisolone no corticosteroid-induced complications were observed. Transient ecchymoses occurred in patients treated for longer time periods with prednisolone 4 mg daily. In 12.5% of patients pityriasis versicolor developed, and muscle weakness was the complaint in 3.1% of cases. In patients treated with 6 mg daily of prednisolone petechiae were noted in 35% of cases, in 10% subcutaneous tissue atrophy, in 2.5% osteoporosis was observed, and menstruation disturbances were reported in 25% of the treated women. In patients receiving prednisolone 8 mg daily subcutaneous extravasations developed in 80% of cases, skin atrophy in 50%, myopathy in 25%, crural thrombophlebitis in 5%, cushingoid features in 7.5%. In patients receiving prednisolone 12 mg daily, besides the above complications, fractures occurred in 14.2% of cases, and psychotic symptoms in 7%.

[Results of examination of the reproductive organs of female workers in the textile industry].

595 women, knitting-industry workers, were examined. This number constituted 47% of all employees of the knitting plant. 125 of those women were pregnant. Among non-pregnant women 35% exhibited reproductive organ pathologies. Of pregnant women 61% exhibited pregnancy complications. The prevalent pathologies of reproductive organs were uterine cervix erosion--37.8%, vaginitis--23.9%, and menstruation disturbances--12.8%. Of pregnancy complications anaemia--47.8%, early gestoses--27.8%, and vaginitis--6.6% prevailed. The working women indicated a statistically significant dependence between the posture at work and prevalence of gynecopathies. Most pathologies affected women walking at work, whereas, least pathologies were observed in those working at sitting posture.

[Clinical experience with modified method of tubal ligation].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical results with modified tubal ligation method. METHODS: From 1983 to 1992, 700 cases of modified tubal ligation operation with tubes cut and overlapped were performed in our hospital, and this was compared with 602 cases of Pomeroy's and 502 cases of modified Uchida's method. Patients were followed at 6 months, 2 and 5 years. Pregnancy rates, menstruation disturbances, lower abdominal or back pain, and leucorrhea were observed. RESULTS: Patients with modified tubal ligation method had a pregnancy rate of 0.43%, which was significantly lower than that of Pomeroy's 1.50% (P < 0.05). The modified method group also had few complications. The occurence rate of menorrhage and prolonged bleeding were apparently lower than that of Pomeroy's too (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: This modified tubal ligation method is more effective and practicable than Pomeroy's and modified Uchida's method.

[Emergency contraception with mifepristone and anordrin].

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy of mifepristone or with anordrin for emergency contraception. METHODS: 300 healthy women were recruited within 7.2 hours after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure and randomly allocated into 3 groups. Group 1 (n = 100), mifepristone 25 mg twice with 12 hours apart; group 2 (n = 99), single dose of mifepristone 25 mg; and group 3 (n = 101), mifepristone 25 mg and anordrine 7.5 mg given once. RESULTS: No pregnancy occurred in group 1, while 1 pregnancy in each group 2 and 3. The contraceptive effectiveness were 100.0%, 83.8% and 86.1% for the 3 groups respectively. The overall menstruation disturbances and side effects were low. CONCLUSIONS: Both mifepristone 50 or 25 mg were effective for emergency contraception and no synergetic effects of anordrin in combination with mifepristone was shown in this study.
