Abnormal expansions of polyclonal large to small size granular lymphocytes: reactive or neoplastic process?

Morphological, immunologic, and functional properties of peripheral blood cells from two patients with chronic proliferations of granular lymphocytes are described. Cells from both patients showed a heterogeneous pattern from both a morphological and immunologic standpoint, indicating a polyclonal, rather than a monoclonal, expansion of these cells. In fact, both large and small-to-medium-sized granular lymphocytes were observed, and different percentages of positivity were found in the analysis with a large panel of monoclonal antibodies. Serologic and histologic features support the hypothesis that this lymphocytosis could be secondary to bacterial or viral infections rather than a primary event, suggesting that these patients may have chronic reactive immunoregulatory disorders.

[Effect of anesthesia on a neoplastic process in an experiment].

The modifying influence of anaestesia on tumourigenic process (its stimulative or inhibitory effect upon tumour and metastasis growth) was established. It may occur indirectly, i.e. through endocrine link of the host-tumour system, and due to cytostatic effect of the anaesthetic drug (fluothane in particular).

[Is an early diagnosis of neoplastic processes of the rectum possible?].

The better operative results and lasting cure of malignant tumors can be ascribed to early detection rather than to the improvement of surgical techniques. In the cancer of the breast and gynecological carcinoma the importance of early detection has been more emphasized than in cancers of other location. On a total of 5210 rectoscopies performed the authors detected 285 malignant tumors of the rectum. On the average the diagnosis was made 9 months after the appearance of the first symptoms. In 74% of cases the tumors were detected already by the digital examination, while in 46.9% of the rest of the patients inoperable carcinoma was involved. By obligatory digital examination in all cases of "hemorrhoidal" complaints and additional rectoscopy neoplasms of the rectum can be detected at an early time and more patients can be afforded lasting cure.
